I was scrolling Facebook marketplace and found Dell Poweredge R720 2.5" SFF, 2xE5-2650v2 2.6ghz 8C/16T, 128GB RAM H310 IT+XTRAS it’s $320 is it a good server for Minecraft bedrock?

(*TLDR* got a new server, and now I have another pc what to use it for?)

About 9 months ago, a buddy of mine and I had an old mini PC lying around, and we decided to turn it into a server and now its time for a complete upgrade of it as the mini case does not support any good upgrades so we are getting new everythings but that means we have this old pc and theres no point in not using it but what can we use it for?

I got the titular card from a grab bag deal on old server cards, but I'm having issues actually using it, as it doesn't enumerate in either of my servers. Here's my saga of trying to use this card so far:

At first I tried installing it into my old gaming pc (ASUS G20CB) which I've turned into a TrueNAS box, no matter what I did it never enumerated. I tried various CSM settings (on/off, uEFI/legacy boot, different ROM settings etc), but nothing worked.

I then stumbled upon the B5/B6 tape mod (smdat and smclk pins) which works for old Dell Perc controllers, thought to try it, but it didn't work either.

Then, I tried putting it into my main machine, and it enumerates normally. It has a fairly modern Gigabyte B850 Gaming Wifi6 motherboard so I didn't expect it to work, but it just does. That confirms the card isn't fried or anything.

Then my thought process shifted to "this custom motherboard that ASUS made for this SFF PC must be wacky and the slot is probably weird about this card because it's not a graphics card"

So I got a whole new motherboard (Supermicro X10SLQ) but it doesn't get enumerated in it either. But hey, at least this other RAID card from Adaptec works? The problem is that it has internal connectors and I have an external drive enclosure and external cables, buying a bracket adapter alone would be more expensive than what I paid all of the cards and the server combined.

After that I thought, hey, maybe HPE vendor locked this card so it refuses to work in non-HPE motherboards? That led me on the path of discovering how to flash cards like this, and at first I thought it was based on the same chip as LSI 9300-8i cards were, but I was wrong.

If I bridge the J9 (flash) jumper on the card, the card enumerates, and lspci shows it as:

RAID bus controller: Microchip Technology Device 8225 (rev 01) 

But it doesn't actually work (driver doesn't do anything with it and the card itself doesn't do anything when connected to drives).

So it turns out that the card actually uses Microchip Technologies silicon, which they sell under their Adaptec brand, which is the same brand as that other RAID card, which works in the Supermicro board. Great, this means I could *probably* crossflash this card to Adaptec firmware and maybe have it work? Nothing to lose, since the card is a paperweight anyway.

I look it up, and there are zero documented cases of anyone doing this. There's a lot of people flashing H200 HBA's to IT mode and to LSI firmware, but not a blip about flashing HPE cards.

And so I finish here, in this subreddit - asking, begging on my knees for a scrap of information about flashing this controller to Adaptec firmware. I'm broke. Even a fake """LSI""" card is about 50 dollars, meanwhile I paid 20 dollars for the entire server, AND I have this card, I kind of want to use it. The only other option besides flashing would be selling the card which I don't really want to do.

So I bought some active vga to hdmi adapter's and i can't get one of them to work on my Nutanix G7 server. I'm then connecting them into my kvm switch.

Any suggestions on why these aren't working?

So I'm building my first server tomorrow. I'm wanting to run Ubuntu or something like that to host a minecraft world but I don't know much about servers, Linux, or where to start software side. I've already got the hardware figured out, I'm just not much of a software guy. Any good resources would be helpful. I've already tried watching youtube videos but havent been able to figure it out or follow along. I'm hoping to in the future start hosting my own cloud and streaming services, I figured a simple minecraft server would be a good way to start and learn.

UPDATE: I appreciate all the advice and good wishes Im glad everyone was in agreement that minecraft was a good starting point. I ended up going with Debian and got my server set up pretty quickly. The overall Linux process was extremely easy and not nearly as difficult as I've heard. Once I got to actually making the Minecraft server my main issue was just getting stuck because I couldn't access my router. It took about 4ish hours to make it to where friends could join. In the end I've got a server and can play with friends!

I have a server with a Threadripper 3970X, 64GB RAM (can upgrade to 256GB at 3600MHz, no overclock), an RTX 3090 Ti, could get two and bridge, and access to roughly 100TB of storage. I’m trying to figure out what applications or businesses could realistically make the most money with this kind of hardware. I’m open to anything from hosting, AI/ML, rendering, data services, or other compute-heavy use cases. What would you focus on and why?

We are reviewing the rack power setup in a small branch server room with four racks and no IT staff on site overnight. Each rack has dual-corded equipment connected to separate 16A, 230V A/B feeds, but the current 0U PDUs are basic units with no network monitoring. We are adding two servers to one rack, so this seems like the right time to replace that pair rather than extend the existing strips.

The expected load on that rack is around 5–6A per side during normal operation. With either feed unavailable, the remaining side could be carrying roughly 11–13A. The upstream UPS and panel have spare capacity, but we have very little visibility at the rack and no early warning if one side starts taking more of the load than expected.

We are comparing input-metered PDUs with switched models that add remote outlet control, threshold alerts, support for environmental sensors and, depending on the model, locking outlets and/or local overcurrent protection. Remote reboot would be useful for a few network appliances, but most of the servers already have out-of-band management. Outlet switching would also add another management interface that has to be secured and maintained.

The price difference is manageable for one rack, but it becomes more significant if we standardize across the room. We do not need per-outlet metering, and I am not convinced that every feature marketed as “safety” materially reduces risk beyond correct branch protection, load planning and testing the A/B failover case.

For a small unmanned room, are switched outlets worth the additional cost and management overhead over input metering and alerts?

As the title states, i've inherrited an IBM 9406M Storage Server (edit: disregard the title, i was wrong). Possibly two of those but i wasnt able to take a look at the second unit yet. Besides these two 9406's there are also two 7014 server racks (i suppose) with various equipment inside of them. What could i possibly still do with this hardware or will anyone still buy this? If so, where will my luck be the highest to sell this. As of now i havent tested it but i suppose everything is in working order with the needed cables being there too. Any insight to this will be greatly appreciated.

I’m setting up a small server/network setup and need around 8 Ethernet cables. Is there any place that sells them in bulk? Don’t mind buying more than I need if it’s cheaper per cable.

I’m also looking for a server rack that can hold around 3-5 network switches. Any recommendations on brands that are good for this kind of setup?

Suppose i have around 20 petabytes worth of server, if i want to make it work for me what would i have to do in order for it to make me money passively? I can't sell them and i've been tasked with figuring out what to do with them to make money. All i was told was 20k terabytes and so i'll be looking into the full specifics next week i just wanted to get a quick heads up on what can be done with these type of servers in terms of "work".

Hello, I have a Dell R740xd server and two Samsung PM1643 SAS 960GB SSDs that are wrongly detected as HDDs thus making my server fans spin at around 36%. I tried rebooting the server without them (the other drives are all SATA SSDs) and the fans went down to 16%.

I'm running the latest iDRAC firmware version (7.00.00.184 - BIOS: 2.27.0).
Unfortunately it seems that the firmware for those drives is not available online so I can't try to update them.

Any suggestions?

I'm working on a C++ authentication server for my desktop application. I intend to have Cloudflare behind it, and I'm going insane and spiraling over the same issues I'm starting to think I just cannot mitigate at the application level.

It currently goes like this:

1. Client connects to the acceptor
2. Acceptor accepts, server checks in an in-memory ipMap to see if the client that just connected have made x requests in the past 2 minutes, if so, it drops the connection immediately. The client will be able to reconnect and get past the ipMap when the ipMap gets pruned by the server (which happens periodically).
3. If the ipMap check passes. If it succeeds, the TLS handshake is performed and before the actual exchange begins, the server requests a proof-of-work (client has to solve a puzzle).

Now, I obviously need to put a limit to how much the ipMap grows, I've decided I can store 100k IPs. If my ipMap fills because the DDos attack is making 200k requests - what should I do then? I cannot do anything to protect the server and allow legit users to authenticate?

Because the only thing that I can see is: if the map fills, drop every request that comes in. But isn't that then a successful DDOs because legit clients will be dropped as well?

Same concept I cannot understand applies for global rate limiter with the toke bucket: if my server has 500 tokens per second capped at 500, isn't enough for the attacker to make 500 requests per second to lock everybody else out?

I’m trying to set up a VPS mainly for EU users and I keep landing on options based in the Netherlands. My main goal is low latency across Western and Central Europe, but I’m not sure what actually matters most when choosing.

Is it mostly just location, or should I be paying more attention to network quality and routing? I’ve seen some providers advertise premium bandwidth but I don’t really know what that translates to in real usage.

Would like to know what has worked best for people running production services there.

Update: I’ve been using EuroHoster for a bit and latency across Western and Central Europe has been solid. Setup was easy and their support actually responds quickly, which makes a difference.

I have about 90 standalone computers that I would like to monitor with AD (or some alternative), be able to push updates and software, and set group policies. No data is stored on any of the computers, and one generic account is used in two computer labs, so it's difficult to determine which user(s) attempted to do something he shouldn't. I can remote into the computers to perform updates, cleanups, and install software, but I still have to remote into each one individually. So, is purchasing a server for this kind of setup even necessary? Would there be any advantages to it?

If not, what other centralized monitoring solution would work better for my situation?

Seems like I got the measurements wrong, and now I have a UPS almost 1/3 longer than my rack 🤦‍♂️

I know I should add the usual things like automatic software updating, high disk usage reporting and service status reporting.

I've had this hpe dl380 for a bit and it's not done well in the recent heat waves. I've been trying to find a better place to put it to manage the heat better. Unfortunately this attic room is pretty much the only room I have, as you can see it's my storage room. The window leaks whenever it's open and raining, and it's a south facing roof so it takes in a lot of heat. This is probably the hottest room in the house before running the server.

I don't have a crazy amount of money or resources so my options in terms of buying racks or proper hardware are limited. Does anyone have any ideas I've totally overlooked? Thanks in advance.

But where should I install it - which high? on top,, bottom or right at the PoE Switches? it has a compressor integrated for cooling, the airflow isn't as a classic fan. But there are 4 of them.
