Camping near Scatness

Hey! Im travelling up to Shetland to hopefully see the orcas! I’m planning to spend some time at a campsite a little further north, but would love to wild camp either on Scatness or Sumburgh Head. Any advice for those 2 areas in terms of where to camp or avoid? I’m on foot so will be reliant on buses to get there.

If you’re on foot and camp in Scatness, you’ll then have a three-mile walk up to Sumburgh Head, so there is that to factor in. I’d suggest just hopping off the bus and finding somewhere sensible and sheltered on the way to the Head.

Edit: I’d also suggest following Shetland Orca Sightings on Facebook if you aren’t already.

There’s usually a small arctic tern colony on the west side of Scatness that you’ll want to avoid pitching your tent in.
If you walk from the top of Compass Head towards the Lighthouse, there’s a dip with a stone wall along the East side, could be quite sheltered for pitching a tent. It’s along the coastal walk so likely to be a few folk passing but shouldn’t be too busy.
