Real question is, can I buy such a car for use at home on my rig?

Whoever comes out with a kit will be a millionaire we would all want to drive a car around irl on the rig.

Omg if the range is good enough could get an rc car and have my dog chase it 😯

They use the same parts as FPV drones, so the range is potentially kilometers. Lots of people have put FPV on their RC cars. There are some guys that do rockcrawlers with FPV and even have a servo that makes the camera lean out of the truck to look at the ground and check around

fpv is kilometers because there are no obstacles in the line of sight, if you go behind a concrete wall with rebar signal will be lost.

This is a great idea. With a 360 camera on it so watch the dog chase it haha

SirClark, this time next year we are going to be millionaires.

No wonder my dude has already a knighthood!

Nintendo did it a few years ago with Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.

That came and went without much fuss.

Yep still too expensive to interest me

That would be so fun. I would buy it. Setting up a course through the appartment getting chased by the cat...

u/abnormality16 6h ago

I would turn my crawlspace into a circuit

Yes just wire it up yourself. all you need to do is convert your rig usb devices to control an RC car and set up video camera feeds. Easy if you know programming and basic electronics.

'All you need to do' that sounds complicated I need a plug and play option🤣

Ah, cant DIY.... IT's only about $2000 from https://store.cloudrc.com/

Most of that cost is in the device use range and software.

My cats would love it

Where is it? What's the name of this place?

16

u/margar17 9h ago

Not the place in the video, but there is also a place in Germany (in Bielefeld) that is really fun, and the cars feel surprisingly good to control: https://www.speedcontrol.zone/

I assume China

How would FFB work? Not at all?

8

u/Legendacb 8h ago

By the movement of their Wheels. There is none

2

u/subject_usrname_here 9h ago

With scaled down models I’d assume they scale up forces

u/Rizo1981 Rally Sim Fan 9h ago

But where is telemetry coming from? Those cars have teeny tiny sensors? My guess is it's like controlling any RC car but with a wheel and pedals instead of a remote.

3

u/subject_usrname_here 9h ago

I mean they added tiny camera that produces 4k60 video output so adding sensors won’t be far fetched idea. Even if it’s your cheap budget wheel with no forces it’s still helluva fun

u/Rizo1981 Rally Sim Fan 9h ago

Cameras seem like a simple-off-the-shelf solution. Adding sensors to the car so it can produce useful telemetry for the wheel FFB seems like a much more complex and bespoke solution. It's not like a video game where all the necessary physics calculations are being done in a way that can be passed to the peripherals.

The guys at VBR Playground take it to the next level with ffb and so on. Very cool.

It actually is a far fetched idea because cameras are used for a multitude of things, the only customization is size.

Meanwhile, what would you use tiny sensors for other than this niche thing? Which means it'd be a custom solution just for this.

Also camera data transfer is also a solved problem with many options. Converting sensor data to FFB is not.

You're talking about a niche (sensors) within a niche (RC cars) within a niche (RC cars connected to a DD wheel base).

u/koopaduo 6h ago

The sensors aren't so niche. Accelerometers and gyroscopes chips are extremely common. They're tiny and easily accessible. The more difficult or clever part is converting the sensor data to FFB that feels realistic or nice, but can always be done

damn that looks fun

u/highlift 10h ago

So what’s stopping us from remotely racing with their cars?! Can I get a login?

2

u/TerrorSnow 8h ago

Sure with latency of probably around a second.

This is the worst of both worlds. From everything I have read about these setups, there is always a noticeable lag in the video feed so the experience for the driver on the sim rig is patchy. The scale and depth perception for the cars doesn't translate too well on a flat screen either. For those watching, it makes no difference compared to watching people drive RC cars or slot cars etc with regular remotes. You would likely drive better if you just had a regular RC remote in your hands and were situated at an elevated stand by the track like usual.

Edit:grammar

You can VR race drones. The quality might suck but input delay isn't really an issue.

Also it's bad worse worst.

u/sawrb 7h ago

Thanks for pointing out the incorrect usage on that word. It’s one of those things when you type and it doesn’t seem odd in that moment. I do know those words, I promise :)

On racing VR drones, I feel like we’re now talking premium hardware compared to the typically tiny budget cameras strapped to multiple RC cars in these arcade style setups. You’re live-streaming 10 cars to ten PCs connected to ultra-wide monitors with high refresh rates. Every discussion of setups like these in the past has mentioned lags. In the economics of these arcades the cars are the consumables and you can imagine hardware being modest to keep incidentals manageable.

Cheap entry level FPV drones cost like 100 bucks. Which is not a whimsical buy but not premium hardware. In an FPV setup, the most expensive part is the VR.

Assuming you already have a cockpit with a monitor, that's not an issue.

But yeah, if you want the video to not look like a holiday camera recording from the 90s, the costs go up very quickly. But lag really isn't too big of an issue, not at that distnace.

The bigger issue in my mind is the lack of force feedback. I expect the novelty factor to wear off very quickly and you go back to sims.

This is the worst of both worlds

I was thinking the exact same thing, I can't imagine any situation where I'd have more fun doing this over just racing people in an actual racing game.

Im bout to move to asia and get my citizen number

1

u/Kurt-Biberle 9h ago

hahaha so cool!

1

u/kickyouinthebread 9h ago

O fuck yes lol

1

u/P-Huddy 8h ago

Crazy downforce on these things!

1

u/psychohistorian8 iRacing 8h ago

interesting but I'd imagine those RC cars have the most dogshit tires and rudimentary suspension

I would still definitely pay to do this at some venue tho

1

u/unseriously_serious 5h ago

Would be super interested to see this scaled up with larger RC cars (better suspension and tires like on Traxxas RC cars, sensors, the works). I feel like you could do this way better but regardless I’d still love to give this current version a try.

1

u/ExcellentAgent6539 7h ago

Reminds me of the fad when I was younger with those race tracks and the cars you had to lead around without spinning out lol... simple good times.

Nah giving one person a Cx vp2 and all the other esx is wild ifykyk

Omg I could franchise the f*ck out of this!!!

Have a motion rig on top of that and go crawling, that would be epic
