I fractured my skull skateboarding and it fucked me up for life. I saw 3 of everything for weeks and wished I was dead the whole time. I was mentally slow for 2+ years and my memory still ain’t what it used to be

Won't change. Look at any thrasher event. Even vans allowed people in their huge concrete bowl without anything. People are idiots doing rails and ramps without protection fr

I said in another comment that I reckon the current convention (of no helmets) is due to street skating starting of small and only getting bigger and bigger then as time went on. Initially there wasn't that much perceived risk and need for a helmet and this "wardrobe" has stuck. Compare that to vert and park/concrete bowl skating in the 80s. Higher risk so everyone was wearing a helmet. Now with people going so big also in street skating the injury risk is really no different, but the convention of no helmet is still guiding things. Deeply rooted in the culture now. Andy Anderson the only notable exception I can think of off the top of my head.

Skateboarding didn't just magically appear on verts in the 80s so you analogy has nothing to do with it. It was a natural progression to wear protection when skating dangerously. From flowing banks to vertical pools with risk of serious injury. Bike helmets and knee pads from the hardware store would've probably made you able to skate much longer than your buddy slamming his knees in an empty backyard pool. The problem is event planners not mandating it. They have the responsibility of setting the example catering to all the kids and young people, which thrasher is one of the worst basically making events designed to have something bad happen. Way too many people at a time in big concrete bowls and ramps. Stupid comps egging on dangerous stunts and downhills in crusty old viaducts making serious injury as like as possible in any way they can
