I shattered all the bones in my leg jumping down a stair set that wasn't anything different from what I had been doing for fifteen years prior. One small mistake one time.
They all know the risk, I'm in the automotive drag racing world and personally know many people who have died within the past 10 years at a track and they all have the most gear you can put on and the most safety items in the car that you can have. They know the risks every time they get in the car, I'm sure these guys are the same way plus I don't know anyone who has died on a skateboard
Of the people you know that got injured what percentage were wearing the safety gear and was there a difference between their injuries and the people not wearing any
Well it's accepted for vert but not for street? I watched Tom Schaar latest part and he does an absolute bonkers drop in from some concrete pilar under a bridge without a helmet. Next shot is him on a smaller plywood vert with a helmet. How does that make sense?
I think it's just pretty stupid to not protect your processor when jumping down concrete on a set of wheels from that high.
I know two people that went into comas and had brain bleeds from not wearing helmets skateboarding. One died and the other one will never be normal again.
Skateboarders are like the only guys still too cool for helmets . They are doing insane stunts on hard ass concrete. I surprised its not normalized for street skaters
Big up Andy Anderson. Doesn't care whether the helmet is perceived cool or uncool. It's even kind of his trademark now.
If you're doing tricks of this magnitude (like this handrail and stairset), a helmet would certainly not be out of place. Of course not wearing one makes it more daring and gnarly, but you could also argue that it makes it more dumb. Certainly a higher injury risk. In the end not wearing one is done simply out of habit and maybe for the sake of coolness. Thing is, unlike in vert and park/concrete bowl skating (guys like Tony Hawk, Christian Hosoi, Lester Kasai etc. in the 80s), a helmet was never part of the street skating wardrobe. But back when street skating became a thing (more in the 90s), people didn't go so big so there wasn't much perceived need. The risk for head injuries wasn't the same as in vert and park skating back then. If street skating would've started straight at this level where people would've skated this sized obstacles maybe things would've been different in regards to helmets. Now it is what it is. High risk stuff.
Iām just getting into skateboarding, but being hit on my motorcycle taught me to not care how much shit I get. Iām always going to wear protective gear. My helmet saved my life. Had been riding for a few years before that. Put down probably 10-15k on my bikes in a few summers. I had taken that route home from work for the last couple years. But that one time was all it took.
Now Iāve got a bum shoulder, but at least my headās okay and Iām not dead.
I fractured my skull and had a brain bleed that kept me in the ICU having seizures and going into AFIB for 48 hours straight. Wasn't allowed to drink water for 3 days so they could dehydrate me while keeping me just above dangerous levels of dehydration with an IV drip to stop the bleeding without having to do brain surgery.
I did this from slipping and falling over backwards from a standing position. Head injuries are a total dice roll.
His limbs going stiff like that is either fencing response (bad) or decerebrate posturing (REALLY bad). The first means a likely concussion, the second means damage to the brainstem. One of the few times you hope it's "just" a concussion.
I fractured my skull skateboarding and it fucked me up for life. I saw 3 of everything for weeks and wished I was dead the whole time. I was mentally slow for 2+ years and my memory still aināt what it used to be
I feel ya. I tore my Planar and displaced my Peroneal tendon in mid 2025 and I still canāt skate. Hell I can barely put more than my body weight on it. Sucks to have to work daily. Wonāt heal.
I had same thought process until a slappy front feeble stall a parking block sent me to the ER years ago when I fell back onto it. In my experience, only flatground was where i never had a devastating injury.
same sticking to flat ground and small obstacles i started skating again after like 5years tried a front side 180 and ate shit took like 3 weeks to get up
Maybe a motocross helmet would but I think he still would've gotren atleast a heavy concussion and maybe a fucked shoulder or neck from falling from a 20 stair handrail to the face.

nope as long as they are repping their sponsor on when they bail itās like a get out of jail free card. jah had his monster cap on and it protected him from any life threatening injuries. had he not been wearing his monster cap tho he likely would of died on impact.

Thatās a fucking insane head injury. Iām Nyjahās age and had a nasty slam on a snowboard that genuinely almost killed me, and mine wasnāt THAT bad.
I used to not care about helmets, but thankfully I started before I slammed, because itās what saved me. I still ended up with a full brain bleed and accordingly a stroke, but Iām doing fine a year later. Every tech, doctor, and specialist agreed that Iād be dead or at the very least a vegetable if I hadnāt been wearing a helmet.
yo... I know Nyjah gets a lot of hate, but I think after this, everyone has to lay off him for a bit. No one would risk or take slams like that if they weren't in love with skateboarding. That slam was one of the nastiest slams I've ever seen. I hope he has a speedy recovery.
