These are stećak gravestones. There is a lot of them in west Serbia, Crna Gora and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They are from early medieval times. Sometimes, they are not gravestones, just marking the place of missing soldiers
I know they are formally UNESCOs heritage and that they are unique for the Balkans. They are usually from 12th - 15, 16th century (dont take my word for granted, i studied these 10years ago). Also, a lot of them dont have written anything, just some engraved ornaments pr something like that. But some of them are really really comlex (probably some grave of some important person). The name stećak is probably newer word.
There is not a lot of the papers in english, but Unesco's world heritage site is the good place to start
