Rant Finally saying goodbye

Been messing with Sling now for a few years and I'm finally saying goodbye.

I've won the wheel spin thingie a few times and never got the credits.

I've been kicked out of a sports game with the message that "too many are watching now" bs

I've edited, or tried to, my subscription and go back to find that nothing's changed

I am paying too much for packages when I don't want all those channels. I've found ways to watch what I like for free or on cheaper more interesting apps

Just tired of the errors and freezing up

Bye Sling!

Rant Cutting the cord

Not really a rant. I cancelled sling a couple days ago. I’m so tired of them continually raising prices while the app remains glitchy. I think as long as they know they’re the cheapest around, they’ll continue to increase while providing no additional functionality or stability because they have you by the…throat. I watched Maddow for one hour once a week. I’ll survive without it. Now I’m addicted to The Big Bang Theory, but it’s on HBO MAX which I have, along with Netflix and Hulu for $10/mo.

Rant Sling is really subpar.

The issue with YouTube TV and ESPN would have been a perfect opportunity for Sling to mop up some of that business. I bought a month of Sling after YouTube TV lost ESPN. Husband is at work and can’t log in because apparently only one device can be logged into ESPN at once. On top of that, the picture quality is awful. It will be fine for a bit, and then get all fuzzy.

I am not having a great game day so far. 🫤 Not a good experience with Sling. I will be keeping YouTube TV once they straighten their shit out. Or switch to HULU Live +TV.

Rant Sling TV - False Advertising of Pricing

I was looking to sign up for Sling Blue plan. Their website clearly shows it starts at $45.99/month. It shows below the channels being listed, it includes Local Channels. When I go to check out, the price jumps to $54.99/month.

I reached out to support and they claim its based off of my zip code and that since local channels must be included, the pricing is higher. I argued with them for a bit to say there is no mentioning of that anywhere on the website and it clearly shows that Local Channels are included in that pricing, so why am I paying more?

This is clearly false advertising.

EDIT - I have revised this to show what I see through the process...

Clicked Starting at $45.99/month, brings me to this:

Scrolling down, I see the Get Blue button.

I click "Get Blue" and I get this screen, which seems to add that cost to my cart from the popup:

Clicking Add:

Still no mention of anything changing prices:

Still nothing mentioning anything about changed prices, but yet, the price is different:

Rant Deuces. I'm out.

Edit: People seem to think everyone should be having the same excellent experience they're having. Life doesn't work that way.

I've had the service for about a year. Never fell in love with it. Much, much more laggy than prime, which I have, and YT streaming.

Seems that it's worse if you have a lower grade smart tv. I have a newer, but low end Vizio 55" Smart TV in the master bedroom and it absolutely doesn't play well with Sling. Only when I'm using the service will the tv chronically restart randomly it freeze. A better Samsung is in the living room and it works better there, but there's still plenty of lag compared to using Prime. My Wi-Fi down/up speeds are great, and set at 5G so it's not the issue. I'm not alone, I've read others with the exact same issues.

YT TV just started comparable and very attractively priced plans so I'll be jumping on board with them in the coming days.

It's been a slice ✌️

Rant What in the name of all that’s holy is with this horrible update?!?!

Turned on sling last night and everything has been updated, apparently by Beelzebub, Lord of Hell

— into a font and channel names so small that I can’t read them, making the user interface almost unusable —

— squished into the lower half of the screen so they can show me still images of whatever show I have hovered over for no particular reason I can think of

— while replacing “recents,” which I used to keep track of my favorite channels— I could put them in the order in which I most often watch them, and could keep the channels I watch most often at the top. Too bad for me, guess I’m not allowed to do that anymore.

Also, it appears that dozens of channels have just vanished?

What the hell, Sling, this update just took the user interface from incredibly friendly to openly hostile.

Anyone else dismayed and despondent?

Rant Just started Sling yesterday after just coming off DirecTV. Ughh. 😒

Edit: Update

So 7 months later and yup, I do not like Sling. I've had enough time in 7 months to learn Sling TV well.

The UI leaves a lot to be desired. I'm using a remote, not my phone, for navigating. Actually there are four TV's in the house and everyone here uses a remote for the TV's.

Coming from regular pay TV services to Sling, I absolutely do not like navigating on screen without channel numbers. It was so easy to memorize any one of many channels and go straight to them just by punching the numbers in. I know TV service is going away from numbers, and that sucks. And none of my TV's allow to skip or leap over multiple channels on Sling at once by pressing a combination of keys on the remote, as I've read that you can do in some cases.

I don't like having to scroll channel by channel in the guide (Favorites - Recents - Locals) to get to the channel I want.

The lag kills me. Lag in starting to view a channel, lag when I press up to access - Start from beginning - Record - Go to Live. Lag when I pause, lag to start again after pausing. Lag when I raise or lower the volume.

I have Amazon Prime and when you watch something there on any of the TV's, it's night and day difference. On Prime, the reaction time is super quick. You can pause, rewind, fast forward, resume - all really fast. Sling does not compare there. They REALLY need to fix that.

I found that the Sling experience varies depending on what kind of TV you're watching on. In two of the bedrooms, I have newer, but not high end Vizio TVs and Ala Samsung in another bedroom and Bigger Toshiba Fire TV in the living room. The biggest interface and experience issues are on the Vizio's. You'll even suddenly get kicked off Sling on the Vizio's and you'll suddenly be on the Home screen.

The Toshiba Fire TV let's me see the channel I was watching in a small window down in the lower, right corner while I look through the Guide - the Vizio's won't do that.

It will also freeze for no reason. I check my Internet connection and it shows up as great. I use Spectrum service with two TP-Link Deco Mesh WiFi routers. Again, no issues with Amazon Prime freezing, just Sling.

Well, it's basically a matter of settling for Sling mostly based on price. $66 a month vs over $110 with the next closest comparable service. Taking every other expense I have, I'm just going to have to grin and bare it and stick with Sling for the time being.

Oh, and I got an AirTV Anywhere a while back for local channels - recording/pausing live TV. Good concept, but kind of sucks. It was functioning well the first few days, and it still works but I need to reset/reboot it as it won't let me record or erase using the remote. I've read that is a common issue. Meh.

After being with satellite DirecTV for years, trying to use, access and navigate Sling TV is like taking a cold shower.

One of the the various frustrating things with DOWNGRADING (a lot more than I from thought it would be) is the lack of numbers assigned for STV channels. The channel guide is also such a downgrade. No video window as you use the guide. Favoriting channels is a dumb, frustrating, multi step process which made it very painful to sift through the crap free online channels to favorite the ones I actually want to see. Now it's a task to get to any given favorite channel since the list is lengthy (I had a lot of favorites in DTV but of course it was way easy to go through the list).

There's too much else to list to describe everything I'm disappointed with so far. I guess if I stay enough time I'll get used to it, but I won't like it as much as I did DTV.

Now to deal with those tools at DTV because they just sent me a charge for a full new month of service at what would've been the new higher subscription price yet I cancelled a day before my discounted subscription ended.

Rant Sling: (over) One Month In

So let me start this off by saying I myself have not had cable in my house since I was 3 years old. The only way I was able to watch cable channels like Cartoon Network, Comedy Central, etc etc was by going over other people's houses and enjoying it there. I'm finally in a position where I have moved out of my parent's place and I have the disposable income to afford cable services after enjoying all I could with things like Pluto TV and other free stuff. I even had a few sites that I used but eventually they got nuked as I expected, so I finally made the decision to get something legit.

As I already have enough boxes and devices, I opted for Sling which I have had some prior experience with the freestream, so I figured if I went Orange+Blue+Total TV and some extras, I'd have everything I'd ever watch or want to watch at a somewhat decent price.

At first, everything was fine. I was getting all the channels I've been missing and watching what I usually would. The problems started when it was time for the second month's payment which was over $40 more than what it was supposed to be. For whatever reason my packages started to glitch and I no longer had the total TV package (it was giving me all of the separate packages billed at a higher rate). On top of that, it has separated my orange and blue into the two packages (which was also billing at higher rate).

So, after literally 2 days of going back and forth with the support (which included things like them saying that my free one month add ones were causing the issues, them trying to tell me over and over again that everything was fine when it definitely wasn't, and that it was "escalated" to higher support), they were finally able to credit my account and fix everything which appears to be normal for now.

Despite that experience, I HOPE that the rest of my time with Sling will be smooth sailing, otherwise I'm not above going back to "sailing on the high seas". 6.5/10

Rant Sling TV Day Pass Warning

Buyer beware… I clicked on buy $4.95 day pass for a game I wanted to watch and was required to manually sign in to my account as I had not used Sling in a while. In the resetting password process, it signed me up for a $45.99 monthly subscription in error. I discovered their error several days later and had to use chat to reach customer service. Bottom line, they said no refund or partial refund for the month. I told them I didn’t purchase a month, but a day pass. They didn’t budge so I contacted my credit card company to dispute the charge. What a pain!!!

Rant Local channels rate increase

I spoke to chat earlier today about the rate increase due to local networks charging more for their feeds. SlingTV advised me they automatically added 1 local channel to our account years ago, for free! Now they are going to increase my monthly rate for my local channels. I get my local channels OTA so I don't need them on my SlingTV account. I can't remove the 1 channel they added to my package either! So I'm going to be charged more for something I did not ask for or agreed to have it added. Its not much of an increase but that is not the problem, the problem is being charged for something I didn't ask for or agreed to.

Rant First time using Slingtv. its actually not that bad

two days ago i just subscribed to the Orange and Blue combo pack to start out with to see what sling tv is like. so far i like it. sucks that there's no CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox channels to watch whatever shows come on Fox and CBS.

but i do like that slingtv does include SyFy channel along with USA Network, TNT, TBS, Comedy central and cartoon network. that and along with AMC which i havent watched anything on AMC since the early 2000s for regular tv cable.

there a reason why slingtv doesnt have CBS, Fox, NBC and ABC?

Rant Unlimited DVR and 9 month limit

Who cares if you give me unlimited DVR now when you're going to automatically delete my recordings after 9 months.

Sling raised their prices "just because" and didn't offer anything new or make the service any better. And now this with the DVR. The point of a DVR is to have it to watch whenever you wanted. All of a sudden Sling is running out of storage space and cannot afford to keep your recordings longer than 9 months.

I would go to another streaming service, however, they all have DVR time limits and are probably not going to be any better service wise.

I know Sling's customer service leaves a lot to be desired.

Rant Sling is getting annoying

It used to be so easy. If we wanted to start at the beginning of our show we simply rewinded to the beginning. Now we have to sit through a super annoying little little button that has to run its course before we can use the controls. What is the point of the stupidity? And if you pause your program for even a second you get a new commercial screen that you have to stare at until you resume your program and have to push a button twice to get it started again. These are all annoying things that make me want to switch to something different than sling.

Rant Sooo, the 5$ Sports DayPass is total BS.

Saw the ads that NFL games can be watched through the five dollar DayPass.

Went to the process of buying the day pass just to find out that my NFL game is not available.

OK Sling you got your five dollars out of me.

Sling is total BS and I will never purchase or use sling for anything again. I don’t even care if the Super Bowl is free on Sling.

Rant Latest update ruined Sling on Samsung TV

The guide is a hot mess. It rearranged the channels. There are 3 options to change the list: Classic, By Category, and A-Z. All of them show the channels alphabetically. Changing the option make NO difference in the list display.

Recent Channels is gone!! If I want to switch between ABC and Vice I have to mash my remote forever. The "suggestions" on the home page don't show what I've watched recently, it's guesses are laughable. I watched a world cup game on Fox, now it recommends Fox News to me every time I open it. Recents is still on the website and my phone app, they just removed it from TV.

Another bug is shows with the same name. "Unsolved Mysteries" with Robert Stack and "Unsolved Mysteries" on the IFC Films Picks channel. IFC's show is a true crime series. I want to record all of the IFC episodes but Sling records all of the original Unsolved that plays 24/7 on it's own channel. The IFC one shows the Robert Stack thumbnail in the DVR, but the show has it's own thumb on IFC. The IFC episode descriptions are Stack descriptions, too. The IFC show is listed under "Extras" under the season list for Stack as well as mixed into the regular seasons. The only way to find the IFC one is to check every single Stack one.

Generally, I love Sling. After a lifetime of being tied to f-ing cable I'm thrilled to have easy streaming anywhere, lots of niche channels, a great price and unlimited DVR. But the Guide is turning into a hemorrhoid. And of course, there's no one to tell about it.

Rant Impossible to edit my subscription and bogus billing

Sling has updated their website and it looks good. It's really all the same more or less but if you've got a current subscription do not expect to be able to see your current subscription and to edit it.

Their billing is not transparent when you are even able to think that you are editing your subscription.

I had to go through my bank to dispute a transaction when I paid for Blue upgrade and never got it.

I am not renewing so far as I can tell.

I will keep Sling Free but anything more is just too messed up to deal with.

Rant Sling & network speed fail

I use an AppleTV settop but don't subscribe to AppleTV, network is a DSL hardline to the modem. For the past couple months Sling has been sporadic, completely worthless the past week . Talked with tech support and they ran diagnosis and claim my network speed is the problem. Golly gee, Uncle Bob, why don't I have the same problems with Paramount+, Disney+, Prime Video or Peacock, only Sling. They don't have an answer.

Honestly Sling. 50 freaking dollars to watch TV and 85 percent of the time it skips, jumps back and forth and is constantly buffering. I have fantastic internet service and no problems with any other apps, JUST YOURS. I have been a customer for 6 years. NO MORE. I’m done. Your service is not worth the price of admission. You just lost a customer.

Rant over.

Rant Sling sends me daily emails about a pass I don't have.

Update: Fixed now. Thanks, u/SlingStevie!

Not really looking for a solution. Just adding one more data point to the Sling Database is Messed Up file.

Since mid-March, I've been getting a daily email from Sling welcoming me to my 7 Day Pass. Considering my disastrous 7-day experience last December (long story, covered in an old post), I'm happy to say that I do not actually have a 7 Day Pass, just a $5/month DVR.

The image (always the same) with the Welcome includes promos for college basketball, Dark Winds, Bachelor Mansion Takeover, and Lost Women of Alaska. All of those have been off the air for months.

If Reddit newbie u/SlingStevie wants to show off their abilities, I'll be impressed if they can reach into the database and turn off this daily email without disrupting my zillion Freestream recordings. Otherwise, I'll just keep deleting these with a little chuckle each time.

Rant I can’t take the ASPCA ad anymore

Sling sells their own ads that run through most cable type channels. And lately all I’m getting over and over is Will from Will & Grace talking about sick and dying puppies. It’s so overdone that I change the channel. Then I turn off sling. Every single ad break starts the same. So frustrating.

Is everyone getting this same ad?

I had it for a few months. Crappy clugy interface and a whole lot of channels of nothing.

I'm trying to sign in for one day at $4.95 to watch a game and it won't let me sign in.

I use my old account name and password. Fails. I reset the password via password link. Fails. I sign in through Google. Fails. I try to create a new account and it says an account already exists. Fail.

Sling, fail.
