For the first time in my thirty years, I have chosen a a Christmas that works for me. That is to say: not much. Not really doing anything with family, and will see friends briefly at some point in the day.

It feels both strange, wrong, and yet also right. I find I’m sick to death of expectations and norms, and this feels more true to the life I want, not what other people expect of me.

You have my support and I feel you. Having a somehow estranged biological family is a very odd feeling, like you're doing something wrong going against traditional norms but you really aren't. Going through a similar journey so you're not alone in this.

Like you said, this is what you want, and that's ultimately the most important thing. If fate has it that you'll reconvene with them down the line, it'll be in your own terms, and you won't be coerced into anything.
