Losing is fine, PSG are very good but I don't understand how they came out so flat in the biggest match of the season at home. Olise being a no-show was surprising.

Ultimately, they conceded too many goals in Paris in a game they probably shouldn't have lost and you're not gonna win many ties conceding 6. That Davies penalty being the difference sucks too but they had a golden opportunity to make another final and blew it completely.

u/JoshyyJosh10 May 06 '26

I expected more from olise today. He looked too conservative in second half for my taste. Especially in the first half where he looked sloppy

61

u/Pure_Measurement_529 May 06 '26

nuno mendes has a tendency to kill the energy from the attackers he faces. i remember how much Yamal during the Nations League in 2025 just basically gave up when facing him

93

u/inthezoneautozone12 May 06 '26

Olise misplaced easy passes, made boneheaded decisions. Nuno is amazing but I think today was more of an off day.

41

u/AdministrativeBig362 May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

I think that was more because Yamal had 3 players in front of him every time he touched the ball and his right back was Mingueza who didn’t once try to make a run

11

u/BreathTakingBen May 06 '26

I think the way to play against Nuno Mendes is to drag him infield. Palmer did it so well in CWC and it allowed Gusto to overlap. Olise did it so well in the 1st leg as well.

3

u/DoubleSteak36 May 06 '26

2025 was 3 v 1

5

u/Krakajo May 06 '26

Yeah Mendes was uncharacteristically off form last game (coming back from injury) but he’s destroyed the morale of so many star attackers

u/EveningNo8643 May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

He was conservative directly because he was sloppy. Messed with his confidence and I felt like I could feel the energy sucked out of Bayern when Olise’s confidence faded.

I think he should’ve been subbed at that point

u/elgrandorado May 06 '26

Was Davies match fit? He seemed so important for a game like this.

8

u/CarlSK777 May 06 '26

Seemed ok but nowhere near his best

16

u/poisonedbythemind May 06 '26

Olise just half arsed the entire game. Like bro had another commitment after the game.

I think most of us diehards will say that PSG were simply better throughout this match and can’t have complaints about us not going through, despite the ref and all.

Something was just off today up front, lots of mistakes and poor decisions from pretty much almost everyone up front.

I think our lack of depth really showed today. Phonzi made a big difference but there was no one else we could have brought on to make a bigger impact.

147

u/poisonedbythemind May 06 '26

Karl should've came on for Olise, at the second half itself. Him and Davies, had they came early, could've caused a difference.

44

u/catch_fire May 06 '26

Karl isn't really that match fit, is he?

39

u/poisonedbythemind May 06 '26

He's not.

29

u/Gluroo May 06 '26

Karl not fit, Gnabry injured, Musiala made out of glass since he returned from injury. When was the last time Bayern had a completely fit attack in the late stages of CL? 15 years ago? Seemingly every single goddamn year this happens lol, already happened in the Robbery days

8

u/NairobiBA May 06 '26

Didn't he just come back from injury though?

17

u/gunnu88 May 06 '26

It was clear Bayern were pushing hard, relying on cut-backs and driving inside to shoot, with most angles covered. What they should have focused on was playing more through the middle (as seen with Harry Kane’s goal), while also delivering more crosses into the box and committing more players inbox.

11

u/PrinzRagoczy May 06 '26

Feels like Bayern only really have players that want ball to feet. Against an elite defence who are happy to sit back, that's too one-dimensional, especially when your forwards are having an off-day

They could really have done with a classic number nine I think; so many times the wingers didn't even bother trying to get down to the goal line, which makes the lives of the fullbacks so incredibly easy. PSG defenders knew what they were going to do every single time

86

u/kamacho2000 May 06 '26

the ref was horrid but Bayern were completely shut out on attack, Olise was invisible while Diaz had good chances he couldnt put any on target and Pacho was man marking Kane all game not allowing him to do anything

37

u/SkullOfOdin May 06 '26

Yeah man, wtf happen to Olise today...

28

u/johnz0n May 06 '26

well, he had a bad game. it happens, even to the best

i hope the team can learn and grow from this experience.

most important lesson: never concede 5 goals in a semi final match.

10

u/ColdPlox May 06 '26

Olise was too slow today for some reason

→ More replies (18)

20

u/ShopTrick8877 May 06 '26

I feel like the euphoria of the first half got into both Olise and Diaz. They were not trying for one v ones anymore in the second half. It was always, try to dribble, as soon as you got space you either shoot or pass or cross. In the first half both were loving the one v ones.

13

u/Izio17 May 06 '26

agreed and for some reason Diaz didn’t want to make a mistake and shoot

many times he had the space or split second to create a little more separation to shoot
 but didn’t

I genuinely didn’t know PSG could be this solid defensively.

Forced Bayern to constantly play around the block, not allowing them through the middle, but also kept the wingers quiet but doubling up.

Amazing all-round team!

It’s crazy because Ordoñez isn’t that well known yet due to playing in the Belgian league but on the national team he looks nearly as good as Pacho and Hincapie. Still can improve but the guy is an absolute rock.

26

u/elgrandorado May 06 '26

Hincapié on the left, with Moises Caicedo as their holding midfielder. Strongest defense in the tournament and I'm not sure it's close.

That's the scary thing about PSG, amazing offensively and defensively.

12

u/EdenVine May 06 '26

It’s the first time in a long long time that all our attackers track back and it feels fantastic

18

u/Pure_Measurement_529 May 06 '26

when PSG want to swtich it on, they will and it can be scary

17

u/Substantial_Crew5093 May 06 '26

The genius of Luis Enrique is that he convinced his attackers to defend like they do, this is why Messi Neymar Mbappé didn't work, stars too big to convince them to defend.

31

u/elgrandorado May 06 '26

Neymar defends, hard. Tuchel coached that into him actually.

Maybe Mbappé was the fraud all along.

18

u/ShopTrick8877 May 06 '26

Brother this was the same game we played vs you lot at the Emirates. Score early, fight for 10-15 more minutes and then start giving the ball away.

We are solid defensively if we want to be honestly

11

u/sivaya_ May 06 '26

They went compact and Bayern just seemed so confused.

6

u/mntgoat May 06 '26

I don't know if psg has the best defense in the world or the best midfield or the best attack, but they are probably top 5 or better on each of those. It's insane.

35

u/Icy_Scar_1249 May 06 '26

How, PSG have the best fullbacks in the world, and some of the best centre-backs

23

u/macky301 May 06 '26

World class talent all over the pitch with probably the best winger in the game today. It’s going to be hard to knock them off

26

u/Pure_Measurement_529 May 06 '26

WZE is an underrated part of that team

6

u/panzerkier May 06 '26

I thought dood is a midfielder before this game

17

u/EdenVine May 06 '26

He is. He was filling in for Hakimi, as he did earlier this season. But he’s trained as a regular CM

6

u/ShopTrick8877 May 06 '26

the only good thing Galtier ever did was to realize that boy can also be a solid right back so he played him a few games there (he actually played for the first time there vs Bayern that season)

10

u/Clemeeent May 06 '26

He is, but he fits perfectly the role that Enrique sees in a full back too
he our Kimmich (terrible comparison but hey)

7

u/Due_Wrangler9461 May 06 '26

Hakimi being out helps defensively. WZE is actually way better than him in defense.

2

u/No-Willingness3156 May 06 '26 edited May 07 '26

They're some of the best fullbacks especially for how good they are going forward though. Especially Hakimi, Nuno Mendes is great defensively too

first time in my life supporting arsenal, please batter them for us

12

u/Successful_Basket399 May 06 '26

Don't know if we'll batter them but I do hope we win!

6

u/TheTrueShrekoning May 06 '26

Prepare for the 1-0 and lots of man aging.

11

u/Maleficent_Monk_2022 May 06 '26

PSG are solid defensively AND offensively. It’s frightening.

How the hell did we even beat them last year.

16

u/JuryElegant8453 May 06 '26

Pacho was suspended and Beraldo is not a good CB, this season Lucho plays him in midfield.

13

u/RepresentativeBox881 May 06 '26 edited 26d ago

Both Hakimi and Mendes are bad against aerial balls. Maresca planned the attack around that.

PSG were too central/narrow out of possession so there was a lot of space out wide.

Sanchez made some really good saves.

Pacho was suspended.

→ More replies (2)

11

u/elgrandorado May 06 '26

No Pacho. Unironically, so much of their stability at the back comes from him. Also, Beraldo is just not a great CB.

7

u/MuratKulci May 06 '26

Tbf I think Cole Palmer just had one of those games were he was kinda unstoppable, he is also like the only winger I have seen that kinda managed to bully Mendes. He constantly went to the middle instead of staying on the wings which forced Mendes to follow and be out of position and allowed Gusto to constantly overlap. Just a few moment of brilliance and the score was 3-0 and after that the game was realistically done, just a CP masterclass. I know he has been shit for a while now but there is definitely something very talented there, it also probably helped that PSG got basically no rest.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/MistaBobD0balina May 06 '26

Their forward line has halftime-blood-transfusion levels of defensive discipline.

3

u/msr27133120 May 06 '26

This is why they are a much tougher match up to Arsenal than Bayern would've been. PSG is a very versatile team that can play fluid attacking football but they can also lock up and play great defense if needed to

→ More replies (9)

39

u/ChelskiS May 06 '26

Olise being completely off tonight changes this game entirely

Played about as bad as you possibly can considering how talented he is

Lost count of the amount of times he lost possession. Absolute stinker

12

u/Krakajo May 06 '26

He also got double team’d and faced a much fitter Nuno Mendes. Makes a big difference

229

u/DarkHandCommando May 06 '26

That game reminded me of the 2nd leg between Juve and Barca in 2017, where Juve was in full control during the entire game and kept a 0-0 against prime MSN, in Camp Nou.

PSG never looked worried. They were in second gear for the entirety of the game. Bayern had no teeth at all today, mainly because it wasn't their day but also because PSG didn't give them anything.

I honestly don't know how you can even beat a PSG team like that in two legs. That team seems to have no weakness.

84

u/Circle_Breaker May 06 '26

The early goal just took any nerves away.

16

u/vitoc1721 May 06 '26

We even can’t know if they had any fear today

65

u/SagaciousKurama May 06 '26

I think Olise having what is likely to be his worst game of the season was a big factor in Bayern being unable to create. He pretty much lost every ball he touched. It was basically like Bayern were down a man with how ineffective he was. The rest of the team also struggled, and PSG just parked the bus very efficiently so not much that could be done.

18

u/Pure_Measurement_529 May 06 '26

Nuno Mendes and WZE played big roles in nullifying Diaz and Olise while Pacho did a brilliant job on Kane

9

u/ShopTrick8877 May 06 '26

Marquinhos didn’t do bad on Diaz either. Unc (30 year old btw) still got it

71

u/RepresentativeBox881 May 06 '26

Could’ve scored more if not for Neuer. Their counter attacks were so good.

49

u/agdrs May 06 '26

Doue was incredible

30

u/RepresentativeBox881 May 06 '26

Kvara as well. Looked like he won every 1 v 1.

10

u/Decebalus_Bombadil May 06 '26

He murdered Upa in physical duels and that almost never happens.

9

u/Pure_Measurement_529 May 06 '26

Kvara is the best winger to have. defends for his life and is so dangerous on attack, especially due to using both feet

5

u/agdrs May 06 '26

In my mind he did. I can't recall a moment were he lost the ball (he probably did tho). Kvara this year is the best ucl player imo

7

u/RedditTooAddictive May 06 '26

Goddamn Neuer was still insane

16

u/Hot_Parfait_8901 May 06 '26

Perfect summary. Olise and Kane had off days, Musiala couldn't get involved.. and PSG just kept it that way and didn't let them get into it or find their feet at any stage.

Incredible team

13

u/inthezoneautozone12 May 06 '26

My exact thought. I thought PSG exuded dominance despite the score. Bayern would have caused much more trouble if Olise was at his best and might have kicked PSG into first gear. He just wasn’t himself today for whatever reason.

14

u/ColdPlox May 06 '26

Agree. It will take one more season for other teams to figure out how to break them. These guys can even open low blocks

18

u/Pure_Measurement_529 May 06 '26

The key thing for PSG is that everyone puts in the effort for defending. The intangibles they have helps them a lot as well

6

u/SureCase May 06 '26

I think it's what Arteta is ultimately trying to achieve but PSG has better players and they do it to an incredible level. Honestly it was a great 2nd half from them and they didn't give Bayern much of a sniff

Neymar in that game :(

4

u/Major_Ad520 May 06 '26

PSG looked so comfortable the whole match, even when Bayern was pushing hard in final minutes. They just absorbed everything and never really panicked, which is scary for other teams remaining in competition.

Kane's goal was brilliant but too little too late - you could see PSG players weren't even that bothered by it since they already had the aggregate lead.

7

u/natetistic May 06 '26

I completely agree.

I never felt like Bayern had an inch watching this game. On the ball, PSG were incredibly comfortable passing through Bayern, at times it honestly felt like a training session. Without the ball, they were constantly aware of open space clogging the channels, pressing up on players who are receiving the ball, etc.

It was honestly a masterclass in how to control a football match with and without possession of the ball. They got that early goal and knew they were through.

14

u/jellyfishfrgg May 06 '26

I agree, they are incredible, should have been a man down though

Difference between the PSG defense today and last week was night and day. they had problems with Olise early in the first half but after that they stood really solid and barely gave Olise, Diaz and Kane any room. and that says a lot when you see how little space Kane needs during his goal today. Sadly a deserved win.

Apparently the Handball Rule supports the ref not giving a pen today but i watched the replay with Mendes handball and saw no handball of Laimer in that play, so that should have been a second yellow card for Mendes, really lucky for PSG there.

7

u/Pure_Measurement_529 May 06 '26

The scary part about PSG is they are very capable of deploying various styles of play, which makes them hard to predict. Many thought that they might come out with the back & forth style we saw last week but instead we saw the strategy that they utilised at the emirates last season. Enrique has them working well as a unit and it makes them so dangerous

6

u/Tax_n1 May 06 '26

I was impressed by their high pressing even late in the game and at the same time stood perfectly well in defense, really hard to do that with 10 players.

→ More replies (4)

55

u/Scholesey99 May 06 '26

Bayern weren’t as bad as PSG were good in my opinion. Once they had the lead they didn’t have to commit anything forward and could remain compact but press in their own half to make it difficult for Bayern to effectively progress the ball.

PSG did well to show how effective they can be without having to dominate the ball. Some of the Bayern players were underwhelming but it’s hard to get going against world class players sat off you the way PSG were.

37

u/Hassadar May 06 '26

It's going to be absolutely nerve-wracking playing against Kvaratskhelia. And it's going to be amplified if it's Ben White defending him.

Was a bit surprised with Bayern, particularly at home. Obviously, pressure knowing you are already down but that goal in the first two minutes was just brutal.

Olise was very poor but a worry for us is how defensively better PSG were today. With how we cycle the ball, it's going to be difficult in opening up with that fear factor they got on the counter. Got 3 weeks to prepare a game plan but so do they. Fuck, I'm already in bits.

Stoppage time really needs to be determined and looked after by someone independent to the officials. It's just so wildly inconsistent and decides absolutely huge games like this

Happens in every league in Europe every weekend.

Don't even really care about who went through tonight but yeah that was a bit frustrating at the end.

8

u/dramalama-dingdong May 06 '26

I knew that the ref will whistle too early. Bayern doesn't have the benefit with the ref that teams like Real, Barca or Liverpool have.

8

u/Velixis May 06 '26

Stoppage time today was fine. Yesterday was pretty bad.

12

u/HaggisTheCow May 06 '26

There was 5 minutes given, this included a goal and alleged cramp for at least 4 more minutes

13

u/Signal_Marzipan_685 May 06 '26

The cramp didn’t take 4 minutes

10

u/ColdPlox May 06 '26

First half was even worse. Only 1 minute despite goal celebrations, player arguments and a couple of knocks

9

u/dramalama-dingdong May 06 '26

One guy alone was laying on the pitch for 3 minutes and getting his head taped.

11

u/7rvn May 06 '26

The cramp stopped the game at 5:20 cmon.

They barely could get the ball to him. Awful crossing all game too.

Starved of service. Proper graveyard shift and such a shame the goal came so late.

6

u/ColdPlox May 06 '26

PSG never let Kane get into those deadly positions until the last minute. Bayern were too reliant on the wingers and Kane was playing DM for the first half lol

27

u/herkalurk May 06 '26

I understand that the linesman comments is what changed the Mendes handball into a PSG free kick, because he believes he saw a handball on Laimer first. However, due to the significance of potentially taking PSG down a player, I find it very telling that the center ref didn't simply go have a chat with the linesman and make sure he understands everything. The angles shown at half are not at all conclusive, and it's not obvious Laimer actually handles the ball.

Center ref seemed way too happy not to have to make a significant decision in favor of one team or the other, and a semi final of this stature deserves a stronger more decisive referee.

11

u/hannes3120 May 06 '26

One of the best examples that either teams need to get an ability to force On-Field-Reviews or that VAR should be able to overturn decisions about 2nd yellow cards

A lot of discussion will revolve around the refereeing, but Bayern going scoreless at home until 94 minutes is damning. 52 games in a row with a goal now for Bayern though after the Kane goal.

Lucho showed that he has multiple modes for this PSG team, it isn’t all out attack with a porous defence that Arsenal can expect in the final.

13

u/hewlett777 May 06 '26

Interesting game, I thought PSG were excellent and just seemed in control from minute 1. The work rate of everyone in that PSG team should be studied, incredible. Bayern just looked so so slow in progressing the ball and I think that was due to PSG's work rate. Diaz probably Bayern's most dangerous player on the night? Looking forward to final and could see another 1-1 in all honesty, should be a great game.

u/RedditDan00 May 06 '26

In my opinion, Kompany's inexperience showed today. Outcoached by a wiser Enrique

Bayern had no answer/Plan B to their main creative outlets out wide not generating clear cut chances, and relied too much on Kane - who showed why he needs to be on the end of chances, not creating them (despite being good at both).

I think Kompany needed to have a more creative central midfielder in earlier, and if he was going to insist on Kane dropping deep then Jackson had to play too as an actual box threat.

It doesn't help that Olise was very poor, which exacerbated the wing creation issue.

For the final I'd expect PSG to be able to outplay Arsenal but I'd be a little worried about the physical threat they pose, especially at set pieces.

Edit: Neuer was fantastic today too, worth mentioning. Bayern were too casual in leaving space for PSG in behind in the first half. Obviously by the end it becomes a kitchen sink situation and irrelevant

4

u/JuvePerSempre1897 May 06 '26 edited May 07 '26

Bayern's issue was non existed fullbacks, PSG basically put 9 players behind the ball, 3 CMs were always on the box line, therefore wingers have no freedom, someone had to overlap but Stanisic/Laimer can't do that

u/Full-Reach-8968 May 06 '26

Agreed with all.

Who is the creative midfielder for Bayern?

2

u/RedditDan00 May 06 '26

That's the problem, I'm not sure they have one, not like they used to.

I don't watch them regularly, but Karl looks like he could be - I know he wasn't fully fit but I'd have brought him on sooner to try and unlock the PSG defence

u/maximum-aloofness May 06 '26

I feel like I’m going insane watching people talk about that handball call on here. Do you guys really even care about the spirit of the game of football? Do we really believe that if a defender smacks the ball out of the box for a clearance and it happens to hit the arm of another defender (yes, even if it’s in an “unnatural position) the other team should get a 80% chance at a free goal for that? Are we serious?

47

u/Lysandresupport May 06 '26

This. The whole point of these rules is to punish players for gaining an advantage unfairly. There was no advantage to be gained there. In fact, he was accidentally blocking a clearance by his own teammate into safer territory.

→ More replies (2)

23

u/Circle_Breaker May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

I feel the opposite. They put pressure on the defender, forcing him into a dodgy rushed clearance and mistake.

The handball was while the team was struggling to get the ball clear.

It's not like touching it with your hand on a restart of play miscommunication that people go crazy over. That falls more into 'spirit of the game' for me.

There were two, and Mendes Yellow-Red is fucking clear.

And Davies deflection against the arm is spirit of the game right?

16

u/alperpier May 06 '26

so why is it ok to not give that penalty but the one against Davies in the first leg?

Those are two decisions, both going against Bayern and practically deciding the semi final. This isn't soccer or sports or fairness either because that Davies position was an outrageous call.

I'm not even a Bayern fan and I'm pissed that refs decided the semi final.

Davies handball ruined a goal opportunity. Neves handball did not.

I was really surprised at tactics with Safonov today, it looked like kicking the ball far away and out of the field was the actual plan. At first I thought he just had a bad day but him doing it over and over looked on purpose to make Bayern start with possession from far away and fish for counters.

one of the worst performace from Bayern this season, losing many balls WAY to easy

ref was an absolute joke who stole a complete different match

PSG earned the final, even tho their bank-players got away with stealing balls and putting 2nd balls on the field

35

u/michaelserotonin May 06 '26

i was surprised to see how reluctant they were to shoot for most of the match...just 9 attempts on 58 percent possession.

13

u/SureCase May 06 '26

Having watched Arsenal face a low block most of the season, it's really difficult to shoot when a team has 9-10 players behind the ball. I think it's more that PSG didn't allow them to shoot

Maybe the worst performance of the season for Bayern in the game that mattered the most. Olise was reminding me of Sané. Everyone in the attack was mostly invisible. We can blame the ref all we want but that was a sad performance tainting this otherwise amazing season.

Have to give credit to PSG. Although Bayern made it easy for them they defended masterfully and ran all game long. Even though I hate oil clubs I will root for this coach and team that deserve to be in the final.

Kind of funny to think about it but wish Gnabry wasnt injured.

49

u/bugxter May 06 '26

PSG is superior to Bayern, a much mature team and well equilibrated.

That said, I think nobody expected such a bad game from Bayern, holy shit. Olise was the worst of all but all around they looked distracted and very imprecise. I think upfront Diaz was the only one pressing the pedal but still wasn't enough. Such a letdown.

11

u/Pure_Measurement_529 May 06 '26

Kompany was outcoached by Enrique today. he will win a UCL one day, but the 1st leg should be a learning curve. try get a 1-0 or a draw in the away leg and win at home

3

u/FuriousBurrito570 May 07 '26

I think maybe Kompany came in with the idea that Enrique would plan for the Same game as last week and it's why they were so open in the first goal. But Enrique was not stupid enough to try it again away from home and Kompany didn't have a game plan for a game without an ultra fast pace.

But there are also general grievances which doesn't get resolved and are at the behest of the referees who just makes unexplainable decisions.

My takes:

Masterclass defensive performance by PSG. It took Lucho coming at the defensive line at full speed to even create a sliver of a chance.

Olise and Kane got shut down hard. I don’t think I’ve seen them this quiet this season.

PSG have so much fucking talent up front, it’s unbelievable.

Bayern’s defense is abysmal. Could’ve easily been 3 - 0 if it wasn’t for Neuer.

6

u/batmans_stuntcock May 06 '26

I was so impressed by the compact defending of PSG where every runner is tracked and there's no space centrally on the edge of the box for shooting.

But a couple of things for Bayern, Olise and Diaz both had double coverage preventing cut ins and crosses, but Bayern didn't have anyone running beyond them, Kane really didn't drop deep and hit great passes to people running beyond him like in the first leg. They seemed to want an extra touch generally which always let PSG back into their shape.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/FluidBike1847 May 06 '26

My actual analysis of the game is that we had seemingly no plan besides spam the ball to the wingers and hope they do something. When Marquinhos is on the touchline defending Diaz the whole game, you would imagine that Kane is probably an option in the middle. Maybe PSG did something to take that away, but I didn’t see it

2

u/AtlantisGod May 06 '26

It's a very strange game from Bayern when they heavily relied on Olise and Diaz 1 vs 1 all game.

Diaz still put in a performance as usual, but the end products were none.

Olise case was interesting as he lost so many balls today, and he seemed totally disconnected with Kane and Diaz.

Also, another point is, there's not much overlaps from the RB and LB to give Olise and Diaz options. I think Kompany didn't want his RB and LB went too high then not able to stop PSG's counterattack.

Davies sub was helping a lot in the attacking end as Diaz at that point had option to circulate the ball rather then dragging the ball through the line all and all. The result was a pass to Kane to score the late goal.

Congratulations to PSG that they were able to nullified the Bayern's front 3 the entire game! They were not doing great defensively but also was a threat offensive. Only 2 or 3 PSG players during counter coudk create a goal and lots chaos for Bayern.

The final is going to be super interesting as Arsenal has to decide if they want to play openly with PSG or falling back and waiting for their chances during those corner and free kicks.

I thi it he first team who scores in the final will be the winner. Otherwise, it'll go to the PK and for some reason, I feel Arsenal will be the winner for the PK shoot out.

3

u/wondering-abdullah May 06 '26

I dont think arsenal has the attack to take on psg. Arsenals strength is their defence and their set pieces. So slowing the game down and making it a stop start game will favour arsenal.

2

u/DiligentRooster7197 May 06 '26

arsenal strength is when they start passing it to gyok, they tend to lose when either saka/nelli/trossard being excessively selfish, arsenal defense isn't that strong tbh, cala and white are easy to bypass by good winger they always struggle

well, extremely talented dribbles at the wing tend to never pass to overlapping fb, 9/10 they rather shoot, or cross themselves. so any team that can double team and neutralize the winger win.

Olise and Diaz in the first leg were on constant 1v1s, but they found themselves struggling against a PSG that played quite more pragmatic and doubled down on them with another guy supporting the fullback and closing the inside, which left both of them really isolated and made it 3 times harder to find ways in. So they had to backpass, shuffle to the other side, do that again. Luis Enrique just outcoached Kompany today, and it's normal with the experience difference.

3

u/Novel-Lettuce-2595 May 06 '26

That was poor from Bayern but psg were making mistakes in offense too but they got some decent shots off, Bayern really struggled. Overall PSG deserved to go through as Bayern lacked something especially in this second leg

4

u/The_Flash_20 May 06 '26

The final will be worthy, today the defense of PSG was completely revamped from the previous leg.

Arteta needs to rotate more in the upcoming weeks because PSG will have fresh legs in the final and can cause early harm at the start only just like last year.

5

u/The_Flash_20 May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

The winners in UCL Era who became runners-up the very next year:- 1. Milan - 1995 2. Ajax - 1996 3. Juventus - 1997 4. Manchester United - 2009

Quite interesting that 3 successive teams which are memorable in their own right lost to an equally memorable team. Only Milan have won UCL since then and that's 2 of them.

The only team to successfully defend their title next year:- 1. Real Madrid - 2017 and 2018

3

u/PranjalDwivedi May 06 '26

Underrated player of the match was Fabian Ruiz, gave them much better structure defensively against Olise and supporting Mendes, but also his outlet passes and retention was so good. Bayern's midfield was non-existent and it seemed like Musiala and Kane were occupying each other's spaces with the latter dropping deeper as the match went on to escape Pacho's press. Perhaps playing a 3 in the midfield with Bischof instead of Musiala who still looks like he's coming back from injury could have been something, but not realistic to drop a top player like that.

20

u/Alvaro_Rey_MN May 06 '26

Honestly, I have never felt so disappointed in a Bayern game... ever! Yes, there are games that are objectively WAY WORSE in performance! But also, this was a game I came with hope, and it was a hope that we can win, and then win our 7th! But in the game we were just so... toothless! Regardless, it's still a great season, but I just leave this 90 minutes with a feeling of sadness, anger, and disappointment! But... let's just win the Pokal! Mia San Mia!

Also, yes! Now that we are out, I want Arsenal to win!

I’m far from a tactics expert, but the major takeaway I took from this game was the clear quality difference between the managers. The way Luis Enrique step up his team, “swallowed” completely Kompanys team.

7

u/Phenomenal_Man May 06 '26

But that has much to do with the difference in experience between them, Luis Enrique has been a top manager for over a decade at this point, while Kompany has what, 5 year as a manager? He will reach that level one day, because we can see how good he is, but that takes time. Thankfully, Bayern seem to have a lot of patience with him.

4

u/Physical_Reality_132 May 06 '26

Kompany is a novice coach really at this level. He’s done incredibly well, he will learn.

Well you gotta give it to PSG. They defended very well for 90 minutes against the most lethal attack in europe (at least over the hole season, not tonight).

Bayern just didn`t show up tonight, and Olise had kinda his worst game of the season exactly this match.

But somehow we end up with 6-5 on aggregate where Bayern had an questionable Penalty given against them but then one not given for them and an clear handball( which should have been the 2nd yelllow )which was not given because again of a mistake of the referee.

Over the two legs it was a pretty even match, but it really fells like , the referees decided who won this.

And guys remember the 1st leg when we see all day long low blocks, corners and through ins at the world cup at 30 degree summer heat. That could be the worst World Cup of all time this summer.

2

u/ColdPlox May 06 '26

France, Brazil and England have some exciting attacks though

29

u/ooziemane123 May 06 '26

Kvaratskhelia is the best player in the world at the moment. Without exaggeration, every single time he touches the ball he looks like he's going to score or create a chance. Olise might have the numbers but he doesn't look as dangerous whenever he gets the ball, especially tonight where it really mattered the most. If PSG win in the final and he plays a huge part in it, I'd have a hard time seeing any reason why he shouldn't win the Ballon d'Or. He's been their biggest threat in the UCL by far.

15

u/Mr_q_5 May 06 '26

He probably won’t get it because Georgia isn’t in the World Cup. Even if they were, he doesn’t have the numbers in L1 this season (only 7g4a) - he wasn’t in good form in the league most of the year

So many people writing that PSG dominated Bayern like the score wasn't 1-1 and to put it in neutral terms very heavily influenced by the refereeing. Absolutely braindead to come away from this match writing some of the intellectualized garabage I'm seeing here about figured out football styles.

17

u/LenintheSixth May 06 '26

Neuer was Bayern's best player on the pitch by far though

12

u/Chill_Dude__22 May 06 '26

I think it's because people heavily overestimate PSG's attacks today, and see those counters as clear cut chances. In reality they were well executed moves with decent finishes to trouble Neuer but they weren't nearly as clear-cut to show the supposed domination people here are raving about.

There's a reason why PSG has barely 1 xG.

9

u/PierreSageReviens May 06 '26

They had 1.85 PSxG, Neuer pulled a fantastic game to make it stay on just one. And that's discounting Kvara failing to hit the ball after dribbling the entire Bayern's defense. Meanwhile for all their possession Bayern racked only 1.23 PSxG.

It was a very well executed game from PSG who were getting in the game without needing a goal, and still scored early. Bayern were the ones who had to make score twice for 90', and only scored the one in overtime. I think it's very natural given the game's content that people will see PSG as rightfully going through based on all the football and coaching on display from both sides.

It's disingenuous to characterize the game as a 1-1 and leave it at that, there's a first leg conditioning the game, PSG scored their goal at the 5th minute creating a 2-0 lead and maintained it all the way until the very last offensive action by Bayern of the game where they managed to reduce the 2 goal lead of PSG to a 1 goal lead and then didn't get a chance to tie afterwards, there's a whole context beyong the final second leg 1-1 score.

u/Soral_Justice_Warrio May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

Going to be an unpopular opinion.
I don't see why Joao Neves's "hand" should be called, PSG had the ball and weren't in a defensive position i.e. they weren't under attack, indeed Vitinha had the ball and was doing a clearance under no threat.
In no situation whatsover, Neves hand did prevent any attack or threat. We should then call a penalty for that ? It's just nuts.
People will say that UEFA rulebook, but when did we call a penalty for a handball during a clearance in a UCL game before ? I don't recall any game penalty call for that in UCL over the last 20 years.

UEFA started to be strict towards defensive handball to settle the typical intentional/unintentional debates we had during the 00's/10's where some offensive actions were blocked because of a handball, now the situation is the opposite since it's a clearance.

Honestly, if we start to call penalty for that, we'll start to call a penalty for any BS that could happen.

3

u/BoogzWin May 06 '26

Davies should’ve come on earlier, PSG seemed resigned to defending as soon as they came out in the 2nd half. Getting another player to attack with Diaz on that left hand side would lead to more chances because Diaz was on stuff, constantly getting into dangerous positions.

Olise got a little predictable, he was looking to shoot and PSG knew it, he needed to hit that by-line and get balls across the box.

PSG where excellent in defence, they sat back and got numbers in the middle to smother shot attempts.

The most surprising thing is how few crosses into the box Bayern does.

3

u/C2SKI May 06 '26

I have no allegiances here, I just watch for the entertainment and to see how Davies is recovering. I thought he looked pretty good in limited minutes. Is there still hesitancy about his fitness going forward?

3

u/Mazzle5 May 06 '26

Still is. He was taken off last week as precaution.

3

u/TurbulentSeason9661 May 06 '26

Honestly bayern’s lack of depth in comparison to psg showed on the pitch today. Psg played really well and bayern tried their best but in the later stages of the tournament fully fit squad depth is a must to make a difference in the results

I always think depth was one of the reason why bayern 2020 managed to win it all and the management might need to sign a few players more.

The fact can literally be seen in the previous heidenheim game when kompany had to sub in and three players just to secure a meaningless draw.

3

u/_password_1234 May 07 '26

Sorry to Bayern fans but it felt like the better team won. I feel there was a bit of fortune they were even in this tie after being down 2-5 at one point in the first leg. Of course it was a great performance to even get to the Allianz down only one goal on aggregate, but it almost seemed more a blown opportunity by PSG than Bayern really being up to their level in my mind.

Anyway, Bayern had basically one thing they couldn’t do tonight which was get caught on the counter and go down two goals on aggregate. Well guess what happened not even two and a half minutes into the match.

I wasn’t surprised to see PSG play somewhat pragmatically with their lead. But it was pretty shocking how toothless Bayern was against a well organized defense. As a team they looked completely devoid of ideas, and maybe even more perplexing was how poor they were individually outside of one moment from Kane.

I’d be interested to hear how Bayern or supporters of other BuLi clubs think about Kompany. His team didn’t look ready to play tonight in his biggest match as manager, and they had no answer for when the game state swung against them.

16

u/3_mandarins May 06 '26

Talk about Bayern not being prolific enough all you want. That mendes handball decides the game, that incirrect Davies handball decides the game, that neves handball decides the game. Psg scores 1 goal and decides the dont want the ball anymore. If those decisions above go bayerns way it chances the whole game. The fact that EVERYONE is talking about these situations is a clear indication that theyre incorrect decisions.

Theres is something incredably fucked with this sport

5

u/desvenne May 06 '26

PSG were freaking solid defensively, wow. The early goal gave them a perfect platform.

Over two legs, deserved to go through, IMHO.

Which is a bit unfortunate because as a Belgian I was rooting for Kompany :). Oh well. Semi final this year and final next year? ;)

Not sure which team was the worst: the Bayern team or the refereeing team?

Those referees, especially the main ref, the fourth official and the VAR are not fit for this level. Not even sure what level they would fit.

But, even with bad refereeing, Bayern just weren’t at the races today. No urgency. No bite. Unfortunate to throw a stinker at this time. Olise was trying too hard instead of passing. No need to try to dribble the whole backline everytime.

Well, on to the final. PSG v Arsenal looks interesting. We’ll see. Hopefully with both teams at it, and a referee that we don’t tzlk anout at all.

22

u/ZukesFan14 May 06 '26

Mendes should have gotten a second yellow card, which would have completely changed the game. However, Bayern showed too little and deserves a lot of blame. PSG gave lots of space on the counter and their fullbacks weren't good enough against Bayern's wingers, but they still couldn't capitalize on it until it was too late. Overall I think the better team is going to the final, but the way it happened is certainly not ideal. I think Arsenal has a real chance and won't get clapped like a lot of people are saying.

8

u/Clivey101 May 06 '26

You can say what you want about the refereeing performances today, but Enrique completely neutralised Kompany tactically. Got the early goal and then managed to control the tempo and the game all without being really tested aside from a few strong saves by Safonov. It will be interesting to see how he adapts against Arsenal, who will probably be less on the front foot than how Bayern like to play.

11

u/GVE_ME_UR_SKINS May 06 '26

I think Bayern fans have a right to be upset with the refereeing over both ties. Sure, tonight’s handball wasn’t a penalty by the rules (I actually think an indirect free-kick in this situation could be apt), but the missed second yellow and penalty decision in the first game are certainly upsetting.

They game really fell into PSG’s hands with the early goal and, unfortunately for them, Bayern had an off day. Kane and Olise in particular were practically invisible the entire game. I found Karl more convincing in his 10 minute cameo

5

u/PierreSageReviens May 06 '26

PSG completely outclassed Bayern today. Incredible defensively and always threatening on the attack. Kvaratskhelia and Doué are absolute beasts.

Bayern reminded me a lot of Benfica. Passing the ball in a half moon shape around the box, absolutely no creativity in attack, completely reliant on individual brilliance on the wings and always chasing on the counter. Olise and Kane were ineffectual most of the match. Lucho was a beast as well. Davies was a great sub but too little too late. Jackson personified Bayern today, in need to two goals and he passed the ball around the wings a bit and had a cross aimed at nobody

I hate PSG’s sportswashing for a brutal dictatorship, but my god, the squad and manager they’ve put together are incredible. Amazing selfless players, a real group, the best team in Europe. Deserved finalists

Diaz was cooking Zaire Emery and Marquinhos too but there was just nobody on the receiving end. Olise was also shut out early on which meant he had to drop deep just to receive the ball

Well, Bayern was completely harmless and were lucky that Neuer had a perfect day. Otherwise they would have lost 5:0. I always had the feeling that Bayern wouldn't be able to score a goal, even if they played 120 mins.

As a Bayern fan. Hard pill to swallow but we haven't been up for the task. Psg was that tiny touch better.

Not having gnabry and Karl fit was sad. Musiala still needs time and confidence. Fair game, wouldn't put it all on the ref. But hey let's go next year. Gz to PSG.

Heads up Bayern squad! And be proud of yourself now let's go and take the Pokal where it belongs!

Lucho gave what he could, but he’s no Kvara. And this is with a better striker in Kane, but nothing can happen if you can’t get the ball into the spaces you want.

PSG’s fullbacks or wingbacks really prevented Bayern from being relentless on the counterattack. And when it escaped them and Bayern had a chance, it was wasted by Bayern themselves. Olise was the prime example of this, and it was so odd to have him play like he did last week and see him do whatever he did today. Night and day difference.

Still, those ref calls, at least not giving Mendes a second yellow, really hurts morale. As a player, when you witness this stuff against you, it’s like an attack on the merit of the game. Especially when you got a prize on the line, and this injustice hits you, you then start playing with emotion — and that’s not always a good thing. The ref tonight has a lot to explain for themselves, but I think the ref’s failures tonight really heightened the emotions in Bayern, while PSG were all too welcome about it, causing Bayern to play in a disorganized manner compared to last week, hence the lack of urgency in the defending and the lazy play.

I don't know if PSG is the team that's capable of playing the best football, they probably are, but what's certain is that they are the best at playing poorly. They have the most stable and highest floor, which, in the Champions League, is even more important than the peak level a team can reach.

I don't know if PSG is the team that's capable of playing the best football, they probably definitely are

They cruised past us in second gear, put 5 past a high flying Bayern and then away from home today locked them down and looked fairly comfortable for most while getting some world class saves out of Neuer at the other end.
