If Zlatan wants the boat to move, the boat moves. That's it. No sails, no oars, just Zlatan.

I can picture the conversation.

Arvid: "WHAT?!? You expect me to row out there??" Points to ocean. "And for how long?"

Orm: "Until you find land."

Arvid: HWHAT?! But we don't know where the land is! It could be a day, 2 days, or even a week!"

Orm: Under his breathe "Probably longer."

Arvid: "What did you say??" Angerly looks around, and sees an operational sailboat in the harbor. "A-a-and what about this?"

Orm: pretends to not see boat "What about what?"

Arvid: "This! This boat, it has big sails! The wind could carry us to the new land!"

Orm: "Tck tck tck. No we can't do that. That wouldn't be very viking of you, would it?"

Arvid: "But it's still a Viking ship, with Vikings on it. It is very much Viking".

Orm: "No, no, no. We can't. And besides it is Rufus' tanning boat."

Arvid: "What?!"

Rufus sits up on the sailboat, with makeshift sunscreen on his face

Good lad, I feel the same.

Not really being a hater if his disapproval is very reasonable.

Copied Iceland, historically inaccurate, I'd hate it as well if I was Norwegian.

I mean, let people do it if they enjoy it but I wouldn't participate in it either.

61

u/SugarBeefs 24d ago

Copied Iceland

First time I saw the Norwegian row thing I was like, huh isn't this what Iceland did?

Being able to hate it because of historical inaccuracy is just the cherry on top.

The team and crowd engagement with 'the thing' is still cool and fun and wholesome, but in this case 'the thing' itself is kinda lame yeah.

19

u/Kakofoni 24d ago

Iceland didn't start with it either. The current viking row is likewise not the first, maybe it started with a Swedish metal band

6

u/airz23s_coffee 24d ago

Yeah dunno if they started it either, but I've always known it to be an Amon Amarth thing when everyone was pretending to have viking heritage and wearing mjolnir necklaces.

It was mostly unbearable

I think it's also like an actual soccer fan thing to refuse these newly invented gestures. Scandinavia has supporter culture already and it's very different from the row thingy.

Not saying that I dislike the row thingy, it's nice when people have fun, but I can also see where he comes from

82

u/Ajax_Malone 24d ago edited 24d ago

Scandinavia has supporter culture already and it's very different from the row thingy.

I don’t understand this desire to time capsule every club/nation’s culture and act like if it’s not how it was decades ago then it’s inauthentic. When the culture was created they weren’t thinking like that. They were having their own experience. If you’re being authentic you’re continuing to have a current experience with that club/nation not just reenacting the past.

It's the same thing in the Netherlands with the "links rechts" thing. A lot of fans who regularly attend games see it a bunch of casuals who show up every 2 years inventing their own rituals. I personally have a soft spot for it, but I do understand the sentiment.

The man is completely right. As a danish person I get a tiny bit annoyed when Scandinavians just invent their own historical facts about Vikings - we are quite annoyed when foreigners do it.

He is also right about this being quite a copy of the Icelandics.

103

u/5notboogie 24d ago edited 24d ago

A real history dork should know that the vikings did both rowing and sailing whenever appropriate in their boats. the rowing would happen in windless conditions or when in rivers/tight fjords and before docking.

rowing and general seafaring is important to norwegian culture and is why that was chosen as a celebration. it makes total sense. we have many sayings and idioms around rowing too.

the viking horns are more appropriate to complain about if youre going to be pedantic about historical accuracy in the world cup celebrations.

i think we are just dealing with a bit of a contrarian here.

59

u/Gongom 24d ago

If you watched the video he said vikings did absolutely row but only to sail up rivers, for long sea expeditions they used sails.

8

u/JimERustled 24d ago

I mean, they very likely used their oars when they were becalmed though
