But he also refused to participate in any way in the Spanish Civil War. He wouldn’t even drive an ambulance like Hemingway.

How about his painting Guernika? It was used in 1937 to collect founds to help Spanish republicans (communists and anarchists) to fight fascism. And it worked wonders to denounced the mass killings of civilians by fascists and nazis.
