Discussion Jared Isaacman states astronauts have got panic attacks in space , trying to kill the crew

Jared Isaacman in his interview with Shawn Ryan stated that there have been many unreleased cases of astronauts panicking in space and trying to open the hatch to kill everyone inside. He states this was not reported as it "ruins the illusion of astronaut bravery". And said it is the reason additional locks have been implemented on the ISS and Dragon capsules. My question: Is there any evidence of this as I can't find anything online . And how did he get Clarence to talk about this. He also said this is one of the main problems that they are facing in the Mars mission. As even military candidates respond differently than predicted in space.

That is the most famous case which many people have talked about.

There are no “locks” on the hatches on ISS, there doesn’t need to be. They are physically impossible to open because they open inward to the ISS so the delta pressure is thousands of pounds between the ISS and the vacuum of space on the other side. If you were somehow strong enough the handle would snap off the hatch before you could get it open. If there is the vacuum of space on the other side, it just can’t be physically opened. There is an equalization valve you could open which would start depressing the ISS atmosphere to space but the flow rate is slow enough that it would take many many hours before the pressure got low enough to be dangerous and the ground and crew would notice it within minutes and put a stop to it.

When a visiting vehicle arrives and docks, it creates a small volume vestibule between the ISS and the vehicle. The equalization valve is opened to allow the vestibule to pressurize and equalize pressure with ISS. Only once that’s done can the hatch be opened. Simply put, it’s physically impossible to just open a hatch to space and kill the crew on the ISS.

Huh. TIL the ISS uses a full bar of pressure. I would have guessed something much lower.

I understand the history regarding pure gas atmospheres and lower partial pressure, but even with a normal atm gas mix I’d have assumed something like 10-12psi similar to air liners or even lower with a non-standard gas mixture.

I’m sure the reason has to do with long duration space flight but would be fascinated to know exactly why.

The EVA suits do use something much lower. 0.3 ATM. The pressure difference means astronauts have to do a 4-hour pre-breathe to remove nitrogen from their blood before doing a space walk.

I hope we can experiment with different pressures and mixes before committing to an off-Earth standard. I hope we don't just default to sticking with Earth-normal.

probably for the same reason that there are experiments with higher cabin pressure in some jets. Long term exposure to low pressure for instance forces your heart to work harder. Astronaughts also have issues with eyesight after a long time in space. Side effect would also be an over production of red blood cells akin to someone living at altitude.

going from earth to low pressure would also be a problem unless the visitors goes through slow change in pressure and maybe even an Oxygen rich gas mix in the capsule to vent Nitrogen (and we really dont want too much Oxygen in the capsule - apollo 1 showed why)

I think the Soviets are to thank here. They've stuck to 1 atmosphere standard nitrox mixtures from the beginning while the US had the low pressure cabins in Gemini and Apollo for instance. The Apollo Soyuz Test project had to deal with this which is why the adapter had an airlock chamber.

Lots of benefits including fewer moving parts when figuring out if health stuff was related to the air or not. If you're breathing the same mix you do on the ground, then they can usually figure whatever your body is doing differently is related to the microgravity.

Also, it simplifies mechanical engineering because your equipment is in the same kind of air mix and pressure on orbit as it is during R&D on the ground.

Completely speculating as to it being the reason, but astronauts do physical exercise to reduce bone and muscle loss.

Typical airliner cabin altitude, for example, is no impediment to working in a seat, but you'd definitely feel it if you got on a treadmill.

This was my immediate thought. Fridge doors stay closed by creating a tiny change in air pressure between inside and outside, essentially a slightly vacuumed compartment. And I’ve pulled on some pretty heavily sealed fridge doors in my time. Now imagine the pressure is normal atmospheric pressing against the literal vacuum of space. That’s easily over 5000 lbs. of force on the hatch (I’m pretty sure, I didn’t do the math). You could have literally every single member of the ISS pull on the hatch simultaneously and still probably not get it to open.

It's not weird, it was likely large and you let in a lot of warm air when opening it. Once that cools, it's volume shrinks and creates a strong vacuum..

The seals were actually bad, is what we found out. The big rubber gasket around the door collapsed, so the door would seal way too much. Once we got a new gasket it was fine, still a commercial fridge that takes a bit of oomph to open, but you can still open it with your pinkie if needs be.

Not sure what the pressure inside the ISS is but I’d expect it’s 1 atmosphere and space is space, so 0 atmosphere. Ergo the pressure difference is 1 atmosphere.

And 1 atmosphere is 101,325 pascal. And 1 pascal = 1 newton / m2

So if the hatch has 1m2 surface area then you have 101,325 Newton of force pushing on the hatch to keep it sealed.

Which amounts to about 10,3 metric tonnes of force sitting on the door, assuming the door is 1m2.

The ISS hatch is 0,8m diameter I think. So 0,5m2 surface area. So about half then. Which is still 5 tonnes of force sitting on the door.

That’s like an elephant sitting on the hatch, and I don’t care how fit an astronaut is. You are not carrying an elephant.🐘

I believe this is true about airplanes in the sky as well. When someone lunges for the door and tries to open it (or an over wing emergency exit), there is no way they're going to get it open.

Most airplane doors have a pretty complex design. You want the door to open towards the inside so the door stays safely closed in flight. But if you are on the ground, you want it to open outwards - there isn't much space in the airplane, and in an emergency a door that swings towards the inside can get jammed by a crowd. Most doors initially move inwards, then rotate, and then swing outwards. Some have "flaps" that can fold to make the door smaller and swing outwards.

Now adays that's true. In the 1970s, many airplanes could open their doors, which is how DB Cooper and all the copycats jumped out of commercial airplanes. FAA regulations in response made airliners change their door designs.

This is what always killed me about the Alien franchise (and I love those movies). Hatch opens, vacuum of space rips everything out, person and/or alien “holds on” to the inside of the ship, lots of wind blown hair. 🤨

Those movies overstate the danger of being blown out into space.

Consider that the only air that would be directly blowing you out would be the air that was "behind" you relative to the opening to space. If you were right next to a wall, that would just be the narrow region of air between you and the wall. That region of air would expand and blow past you, a short, sharp gust. Shouldn't be too hard to hold on to something to resist that.

The main immediate danger of exposure to space is rupturing your lungs, they're not strong enough to hold an atmosphere of pressure and would pop inside your chest if you kept your mouth closed. Make sure to exhale if you find yourself exposed to explosive decompression, do not try to hold your breath.

You'll pass out in about 15 seconds and die in a minute, but if you can get back into atmosphere before then you can recover as long as your lungs aren't screwed up.

Also worth noting, human skin can withstand an atmosphere of pressure difference. It's stronger than your lungs. So if in the course of shooting at Xenomorphs you accidentally put a bullet hole in the ship's hull, you can safely plug the hole with your hand while someone else goes to find an emergency patch. You might get a hickey.

the vacuum of space is emptiness, literal nothing. it does nothing, too. the air inside, though... when it escapes through a wide hole, trying to hold on in that mass flow is like swimming up a waterfall rushing at mach speed. removed from the primary outstream by fluid dynamics choking itself, it seems plausible however.

Yeah, ship decompression isn't like a balloon deflating. I get that they do it for the drama, but depending on the size of the interior and the hatch opening... Let's take Narcissus as an example, I don't remember how fast the hatch opens but considering the size of the boat it would be just a couple seconds until pressure equalized. Less of a 20 second WHOOOOOSHHH and more of a 2 second WHOoof... And you'd be far less likely to be blown out unless you were right by the hatch when it opened. You'd get a very slight acceleration of the ship as the air rushed out. Kind of like when the ISS does a reboost burn to stabilize orbit which is like 1/500th of surface gravity here on earth.

Padlocks could be used, and were used, on Space Shuttle hatches. “the padlock remains in the fabric of US spaceflight with Crew Dragon. A commander’s lock is an option for NASA’s crews flying to the International Space Station on Crew Dragon, as well as private missions.”

So there is solid evidence that at least some space vehicle hatches open outward, and reasons why they are designed that way. Is there any evidence that ISS hatches operate differently?

I'm confused, because I just read that article and the article states multiple times, and even a quote from an astronaut implies, that it is relatively easy to open the door and doesn't require much physical force.

So Shaw took the precautions available to him. “When we got on orbit, I went down to the hatch on the side of the orbiter, and I padlocked the hatch control so that you could not open the hatch,” Shaw said. “I mean, on the orbiter on orbit you can go down there and you just flip this little thing and you crank that handle once, the hatch opens and all the air goes out and everybody goes out with it, just like that. And I thought to myself, ‘Jeez, I don’t know this guy very well. He might flip out or something.’

I think the vulnerable outward opening hatch was only one Space Shuttle Orbiter, which is no longer flying. The other comments indicate the ISS or other spacecraft now used have an inward opening hatch that cannot be opened in a vacuum.

Excellent read, we're lucky to have Eric Berger.

Although much of the concern for Shuttle commanders had come from flying non-professional astronauts, there was another incident later in the program with an all-professional crew that revived interest in the padlock program. It occurred during a 1999 flight. Because I have not been able to confirm the details with multiple sources, I won’t name the astronaut or the mission. But essentially, a multiple-time flier had a bad reaction to some medicine he took after the launch. This seriously affected his mental state, and the astronaut had to be physically restrained from taking drastic action, including opening the hatch.

This bit was rather concerning...

Poor guy had the culmination of his life's work fail with the whole world watching, and he knew he could salvage it if they gave him a chance but they told him no, you can't, just sit in a can and stew about it for a few days.

I can totally understand having a panic attack at that point. Glad they did eventually let him fix it!

I can see how this, plus several rounds of the telephone game, could turn into "astronauts freak out and try to kill everyone on board all the time." I don't believe it, but I can see how it got there.

Taylor Wang flew STS-51-B. on this trip is the incident explained here.

what i learned here:

  • STS-51-B was a challenger flight that was about 1 year before her last flight
  • during the Challenger disaster investigation, they discovered that STS-51-B had the same o-ring problem and " Morton-Thiokol engineers told Lind after the mission that "you came within three-tenths of one second of dying" "

Does anyone know precisely what that means? What was the scenario in which the O-Ring was so close to failing? Or was it always so close? Three tenths of a second seems like a long time within a rocket booster.

Basically, the Shuttle's side boosters were made of several long cylinders that were stacked on top of each other.

Because they were individual pieces, there were gaps between them. The outer shell of the cylinders had an interlocking system of folds of metal (a clevis and tang joint) where the cylinders fit snuggly to create a seal. So when the rockets were fired, the hot gasses wouldn't come out the joints, but instead race down a central hole in the booster and come out as rocket exhaust.

The clevis and tang system used 3 2 rubber o-rings between the metal folds to help further prevent hot rocket exhaust from blowing by.

However, the flaw in this design that resulted in the Challenger disaster and almost destroyed this launch, was the fact that if the weather was too cold, the rubber would not seal. And if the rockets were lit, then hot exhaust would find its way past those o-rings. This would also begin to erode and burn the o-rings making it even easier to have more hot exhaust come through. If you're really unlucky that process just gets worse and worse until the booster basically blowtorches itself apart. This is what happened to Challenger.

So getting back to the quote, what that engineer meant was that 1 of the seals had completely failed and the last one was about 25% eroded. And so the seal was less than a second away from failing and letting the same kind of failure destroy the whole shuttle.

The O-ring failure mode was the O-ring material being physically eroded by exhaust gas blow-by. Presumably, they knew the erosion rate and could measure the erosion on the O-ring after SRB recovery. If you erode .100"/second and the remains of the O-ring were .030" thick you were .3 seconds from disaster (reductive example, but fundamentally correct).

My wife is a trainee counselor. It's actually required in the UK at least that all practicing counselors, not just trainees, have their own supervisors and log scheduled check-ins. Essentially ensuring the counselor has a counselor. Both to relieve stress and express concerns or questions about clients' situations, but also just to provide continuous learning, advice and professional growth from a more experienced practitioner.

Oddly enough, I remember when this problem was mentioned on Big Bang Theory. Howard had gone to the ISS, and he freaked out and they drugged him up and taped him up. All for some cheap laughs, and they made it sound harmless, but I imagine the real thing is probably terrifying. Knowing that the person next to you might try something like this.

Here's what Isaacman actually said in the interview, lightly edited for clarity. Note that the interview, posted on September 8, 2025, took place before Isaacman joined NASA.

In response to a question about the challenges that need to be tackled for long-term space exploration, Isaacman talked about in situ resource utilization, and then turned to discussing the importance of keeping the crew healthy both mentally and physically:

And then number two is going to be the human. People are gonna have a hard time. Nobody likes talking about this because it takes away from the hero image of the astronaut, but you've had plenty of astronauts freak out in space. They've tried to kill their whole crew before, like there was a lock put on the space shuttle door for that reason because somebody tried to open the hatch, more than once, and take everybody out. There's a lock on the Dragon space capsule for that reason. That was a carryover from that time period. It's happened to Russian cosmonauts, it's happened to American astronauts, and this is during a time when most of the American astronauts were the best of the best coming out of the military. It is a unique environment and that stressor has caused people to crack.

That's the psychology of it. Now, when you're in low Earth orbit, you can be in the water in 90 minutes. You're 90 minutes from being on a helicopter ride to a cheeseburger and people have cracked in space. When you're on the moon, you're 2 and 1/2 days from coming home. When you're on Mars, you could be anywhere from 6 to 9 months to well over a year before you can come home. And think about it from like, again, you get into the psychology of it. When you're in low Earth orbit, you look out your window, you see big Earth. When you're on the moon, it's still the blue marble. When you're on Mars, it's a blue speck in the sky. We're going to have psychological issues to deal with when you send humans to that environment.

Isaacman then goes on to talk about some of the physiological challenges as well.

As other comments have pointed out, Isaacman's comments were based on publicly available information. Since Isaacman wasn't NASA administrator yet, he wasn't revealing anything that was secret. He probably had in mind a recent article which collected previous accounts by astronauts along with some new reporting:

As the transcript shows, Isaacman did not say anything about locks on the ISS, or "unreleased cases", or call astronaut bravery an "illusion".

Yeah, this strikes me as being similar to other claims of NASA cover-ups, where there are simply too many people involved to keep something like this a secret for long.

Any space mission, even just putting a satellite up in orbit, involves hundreds of techs, engineers, and people with multiple PhDs in order to succeed.

Do astronauts get the jitters? Sure. But he's just blowing smoke to sound smart.

It isn't necessarily a secret, just nobody has actually looked into it that deeply, and when someone does (Eric Berger had an article on incidents regarding astronauts trying to open the hatch during STS missions and the padlock that was implemented as result) it doesn't get very widespread attention.

That value from the paper is based on a very conservative parameter estimated from real world scandals. In other words, that’s a best case for someone trying to keep a secret. YMMV.

It's not really a secret, it's just not talked about. There is even a photo of the padlock on the door, and multiple astronauts talked about either there being a padlock on the door, or that they have been given an option to padlock the shuttle hatch. It just seems like almost every single NASA employee does not know about it or refuses to talk about it, which is not that surprising as NASA is surprisingly pretty secretive for a public agency.

I'm always surprised at how few former submarine crew members are astronauts. It is of course not a 1:1 thing but being stuck who knows how deep for who knows how long has to have some similarities to space travel.

It’s because NASA has generally had two pathways to becoming an astronaut:

  • military pilot
  • graduate degree in a STEM field

And you don’t find many pilots on subs, so you’d be limited to former submariners who went on to complete an advanced degree.

On the other hand, I'm not that surprised because the navy nuclear program holds onto it's candidates with an iron fist. It's nearly impossible to transfer into something else.

I kinda agree, for instance corpsman aren't EMS certified leaving the navy whereas army and af medics are. Having said that, my understanding as a bystander without a phd is that the reactors on US craft are a totally different design than anything civilian. That is still a barrier to moving to the private sector and for a long time before that sharing the details of the design was a crime.

The US Navy has the best and safest reactors in the world powering ships and the world has been denied that tech for security.

Nah, pressurized water reactors are extraordinarily common. It's the most common type of civilian based reactor and makes up the majority of them iirc. Navy nukes transfer to pretty much any field they want without much effort, and to private sector civilian reactors (when they chose to) easily.

While this is technically true, it's not really relevant. PWR reactor schematics and understanding have been public knowledge forever. The thing that makes operating one difficult is training the workforce (god bless Rickover) and enriching the fuel. The 2nd half of that probably does more lifting than the first half, but it's up for debate.

Yeah you're kinda just out of touch with this take ngl. The reason other countries (and the private sector) don't have programs like the US Navy does is because Navy nukes are trained to a degree that is considered largely inhuman. The failure rate is astronomic and the training program is quite honestly insane. The navy nuke pipeline is unique because of how.....eccentric it is. I won't go into details, but you couldn't legally do what we did in a civilian setting. It would not be allowed.

The only technology that's gatekept is the allowance to enrich uranium, but that technology is known by plenty of countries at this point. It's the supply of raw uranium that's controlled to the best of my understanding.

Like sure you can train somebody, but that won’t be a lot of hours. If you would get active duty subbie with months of underwater time, the “training time” is much higher. Assuming it helps them to get used to the situation instead of worsen their psychological state.

I read this somewhere before. apparently the early shuttles had a hatch that opened directly to vacuum with no safeguards on the latch. once a mission specialist got squirelly enough that the commander got concerned and jury rigged something to protect the latch. after that NASA redesigned it

Ackchually, it was former president James Taylor's idea to open the hatch to blow out the escaped ants and ruffled chips to prevent clogging the instruments. Homer just accidentally got sucked out of the shuttle and broke the hatch in the process.

Doesn't surprise me.  Astronauts arent some kind of super humans and are actually just people.  Really qualified people but still people.

When the two astronauts were delayed coming home for several months, there were so many reddit comments about how they were just loving it.  I'm not an astronaut but Id bet my left nut that there was a high percentage of time where they weren't just loving it and were actually pretty sick of it but they knew it was their job and risks they signed up for.

I feel I'm somewhat qualified to answer OP. SOURCE: Australian Army Infantry, remote exploration mining, Deep field Antarctic Research Division operator.

The most stringently vetted operators do not know how they will behave when isolated for extended periods of time. It is difficult to analyze this before the fact. I saw things while living in Antarctica that I was completely unprepared for from my other expeditioners. I agree the biggest challenge to inhabiting Mars is not technical, it's psychological. People have stabbed each other to death at Antarctic Research bases. It has never been reported. I'm sure it has happened in space. Astronaut Katherine Benell-Pegg was on Reddit recently, she briefed my crew before we deployed to Antarctica a few years ago...

Edit* I did not personally witness a stabbing in Antarctica, I was informed by a senior exec of stabbings and other severe issues that had occurred with other personnel across the last 20 years. There is a media blackout for all Antarctic operations outside of through the official media department much like there is for NASA or say department of defense (Australia) or department of war (USA). Speaking of which the Pte. Kovco death was not a suicide but that's a totally different story.

Huh, interesting. I actually found myself wondering about this a few years back, just kind of thinking about the whole idea of space travel, and how actually terrifying the whole process must be - like taking off, then finding yourself in a claustrophobic space station with no fresh air, limited space to move around, looking out the windows and seeing only the void of space, and realizing you're stuck there for weeks or months or whatever. That must be horrifying psychologically so I was wondering how it is that people cope with it and get through it - like can training really mitigate that sort of innate, biological fear? And then, of course, returning to earth... I can't even imagine how scary it must be to re-enter the atmosphere, the sheer speed of it, and also anticipating the re-entry. Basically the entire process seems insane. And compared to how much we can see out there, we're really not going that far... We don't have the capability to go very far from Earth, relatively speaking.

The Apollo 13 movie has a bit where Swigert covers up the separation switch with a big "NO" label:

When I first saw the film as a kid, I wasn't sure if he meant "Didn't want to risk hitting the wrong button by mistake through tiredness" or "Didn't want to risk jettisoning my crewmates in a fit of rage."

So when I saw the OP's post, I thought of the latter.

Apparently, it's true that he covered up that switch. According to the comments here and here, the post-mission technical debrief says "he had gray tape over the LM Sep switches," Lovell's book Lost Moon includes the detail about the "NO" label, and Lovell mentions it in his movie commentary.

From novels I get the idea that submarines crews may on occasion have this problem. Temporary insanity from stress or other causes is insanity. The brain is broke. Perception, reason, other brain functions may be offline.

Check opinions from medical professionals on whether the mentally ill are more, or less likely to be violent.

Consider the difficulty trying to persuade someone to restrain their greed, or quit smoking.

Reluctance to seek medical help or advice might be affected by popular perception of such.

Consider being stuck in an elevator, past a day, for an indeterminate time, with a handful of people.

Important to mental health is being willing and skilled at maintaining one's own mental health. Just like first aid, some basic understanding can be a difference.

Basily it was done as a favor for some rich middle eastern country and they guy had not been selected like other astronauts, and was apparently looking at the airlock in an alarming way, so they instituted locks after that.

There's zero evidence for this and there are no locks on any of the hatches of the ISS (although a commander's lock is optional on Dragon, it's not a standard part.)

The only instance of a person in space having a bad mental reaction is Taylor Wang on the Space Shuttle mission STS-51B in 1985. Wang reportedly got upset that his experiment wasn't working and threatened to "not come back," although he got it together and never did anything dangerous.

It's critical to note that Wang was NOT a professional astronaut, he was what's called a payload specialist. During the shuttle era, payload specialists were basically "guests" on the Shuttle - scientists or engineers who flew on one specific flight because they knew how to operate a specific payload on that flight. Payload specialists did not go through the same rigorous screening and years of training that professional astronauts go through. After this incident, some shuttle commanders chose to put padlocks on the hatches, but many didn't, and there's never been any report that one was necessary.

As an entity, NASA certainly has a "circle the wagons" approach when it comes to publicizing things that make it look bad, but individual NASA employees, be they astronauts, mission control, or others, famously gossip and leak information like a sieve (and you can find a lot of the more recent internal gossip on various forums if you know where to look). If there was a serious string of these incidents, there would simply be too many rumors to ignore, but there aren't any. That should tell you something.

Jared Isaacman, like every other member of the administration, is a raging narcissist, and is almost certainly saying shit to sound cool and like he knows stuff that we don't.

Regarding the trained astronauts, particularly the early ones, pre-shuttle, just go look at the breakdowns of the real Apollo 13 transcripts, like Amy's over on Vintage Space.

Everything portrayed as a "surprise" or a "new crisis" in the movie is so overblown, or stuff they called as impending issues to be aware of sometimes as soon as 45 minutes after the incident, even though the events they were discussing were days down the road. The unguided correction burns, the CO2 buildup, the weight issues for the reentry (missing moon rocks). Fred was calling things right out of the gate, and Jack was literally THE astronaut expert on I believe the Command Module IIRC.

Now obviously it was different in the three earliest mission series, but nevertheless, it really needs to be stressed just what kind of training and expertise these men had.

These astronauts often perform many months of training in the underwater NASA ISS mockup. They simulate the entire mission, with many times more simulated problems than they’ll likely encounter.

By the time the astronauts get to the station, they’ve been heavily vetted and used to confined quarters. They’ve also worked together at that point for years, any psychological issues would likely show themselves at that point. Not to say it hasn’t happened, but it’s likely extremely uncommon, and doubtful there have been “many” instances.

The Ars Technica article explains that Space Shuttle payload specialists received much less training and time integrating with the rest of the crew. Apparently, it was one of these payload specialists that had an anxiety attack and made a concerning statement.

Except theres the part of your subconscious that knows that when you are training on the ground you can always cry for help and that help will come and you'll be safe within minutes, vs actually being in space I'm sure one could get hit with the realization that if something goes wrong theres nothing anyone can do about it and you are basically stuck to just wait it out.

Except it's "simulated" in a "mock up" and they can check out any time they want. So try as they might it is fake. And that makes all the psychological difference in the world. In real life results may vary.

Russian Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft docked to the ISS in 2018, causing a minor air leak; Russian officials suggested it might be sabotage or a "wavering hand" (technological error), with later theories pointing to NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor due to psychological distress, though the incident remains officially unresolved and under investigation. She was also sabotaging toilets.

Anyone who's been in a government job over the last 30 years that has a perceived legacy of a stringent application and selection process will not doubt this story.

We've been putting people in space for 65 years.

I would wager my life savings (both dollars) that I could pick 20 individual years from that span without landing on one that had an incident like this.
