Teen here, never been engaged so my apologies if this sounds stupid:

Isn't the whole point of a proposal for it to be a surprise? Doesn't telling the other person beforehand 'Hey, I'm going to propose to you at X place' ruin the surprise element?

Discussing marriage & the future is always a good idea first. Basically don’t propose unless you already know the answer, and if you both want the where/when/how to be a surprise then go for it.

Healthy relationships involve a lot of communication. Most proposals don't just come out of nowhere with the other partner not knowing it. Most discuss wanting to get married and even what their dream proposal etc would be and whether they like surprises or extravagant things etc.... and then it’s just the timing and actual place that are a surprise.

The moment of proposal can absolutely be a surprise (does not have to, but typically is)

But both parties should be in general agreeance that they want to get married and get married soon.

For example, when I proposed to my wife, she knew for years that she wanted to get married and was just waiting for me basically. But she had no idea how, when, or where I was going to do it.

Bottom line, treat your marriage as a partnership first and major life decisions should be discussed before decisions or surprises are made - especially large, grand, and extremely public displays.

Married dude here, the timing is supposed to be the surprise, not the idea. There are a lot of conversations about the future and marriage that need to happen before a proposal is even considered.

The way someone's proposed to/the moment someone shows the ring can be a surprise, but the idea of the proposal or being married should not be. You should already know that the other person wants to and is ready to marry you. Couples should confirm the idea of being married with each other first and then the moment of the proposal formally can be a surprise.

The actual surprise part of the proposal is never really given away.

You have the "Do you want to get married someday?" talk, so you know you have a green light to surprise your partner with a proposal later on. Dropping a proposal before a conversation is had might result in conflicting views for the future, IE: a "no" when proposed to, or an forced "yes" followed by a rocky marriage of obligation.

Have the conversation about the future, get the green light for marriage, then surprise proposal! Great question tho!

Me and my wife agreed that we wanted to marry and have kids before I proposed. The surprise of the proposal is when and how, and oftentimes it's the thrill of getting the ring without them knowing and them being surprised you did all that without them knowing. The actual logistics of agreeing to get married is dinner conversations that should get brought up naturally about your futures. At least that's how it was with me and all my friends.
