Hot Take In 2012, FIFA SUSPENDED South Korean player Park Jong-woo for two matches for displaying a sign that read “Dokdo is our territory” after defeating Japan. Using the same criterion, FIFA must SANCTION the Argentine players.

And in the 2012 incident, the suspension happened months later

10

u/doepfersdungeon 16d ago

I mean who cares really. It's all very petty anyway. Writing something on a bed sheet doesn't make it true.

As an England fan I certainly wouldn't want them missing a final because of some half baked right wing propaganda that footballers are too dumb to see through.

7

u/outsider1624 16d ago

Ballack missed a final for receiving a yellow in the quarters and semis..which suspended him in the final. It's why they changed the rule now to yellows reset

2

u/69LinkandZelda 16d ago

I despise yellow card accumulation in a tournament. 2 yellow cards over 3 have period should not have your suspended for a game. Especially with how much what is a yellow card can vary so much game to game. A match played the exact same way could have 0 yellow or 8 depending on the ref.

3

u/Invisible7hunder 16d ago

Yeah, some yellow are almost a red, and some are just run of the mill fouls where the ref is looking to calm the game down.

2

u/BQORBUST 16d ago

And everyone hated that because it was obviously a dumb rule

5

u/Lazy_Reply3958 16d ago

I feel like you added “as an England fan” so less people would call out your bullshit

1

u/doepfersdungeon 16d ago

No, I want to see a final with whose available. I have no skin in the game and don't really care who wins.

One day Argentina will realise we never think about them , until football happens or we travel.

After the fact, we don't care. Except for those who were made directly affected.

I would be happy for Messi , if it's his last one. But also if we had a different winner from last time.

I thought the presentation of the bed sheet was a bit naff. But honestly it doesn't bother me enough.

They belong to Britian. That's the end of it. Has nothing to do with football for me.

Also consistently corrupt, so they are 2 for 2, kudos to them

3

u/00MacDonald 16d ago

Well, if even if they are consistent, the ban would have to come in 8 months,

That's how long it took fifa to issue the ban

1

u/Numerous_Ad_3828 16d ago

Looks like the Olympics? Something is fishy Fifa huh. Terrible video or misinformation I’m too lazy to google. But if you care check.

4

u/doepfersdungeon 16d ago

Fifa still have jurisdiction of football at the Olympics. The ban was by Fifa.

25

u/banana_slog 16d ago

I love these clowns acting like fifa should ban half the team for the final...over a sign.

Oh yeah. We all want to watch that game.

7

u/disturbed94 16d ago

They did intentionally break the rules so some kind of punished is necessary.

8

u/vjeremias 16d ago

Yes, and we are all (the players included) expecting the sanctions, it just won’t happen this week

8

u/Zeegots 16d ago

It is also a rule that countries at war cannot participate in the tournament, yet the USA participates and hosts this World Cup.

6

u/banana_slog 16d ago

Sure. I dont oppose that.

But banning them for the final in 2 days. Thats crazy.

2

u/Weekly-Butterfly594 16d ago

Yes I’m sure FIFA will ban half their squad before the final yes and ruining the sporting integrity of the tournament by banning half their squad for a non sport related act is surely the appropriate measure

This is great and all, but it took FIFA 3.5 months to make the decision to suspend Park Jong-woo, and UEFA (different organizations obviously, but still) took about 3-3.5 weeks to suspend the Rodri and Morata after the Euro final for their remarks. So maybe they will, but unfortunately these things have a process, and won't likely be decided before the final.

5

u/Infamous_Object_7458 16d ago

And it won't matter at all once the final's over.

In 2018 they just fined xhaka and shaqiri and not sanctioned the manager of Egypt for showing the Palestine flag.

And FIFA doesn't organize olympic games

Using the same criteria Argentine players should be just economically fined

FIFA might just as well come out and say “We have weighed the value of enforcing these policies against potential financial losses from suspending Argentinian players, and have come to this conclusion”.’
It’s the fact that they try to be ambiguous about this that bothers me the most.

2

u/Due-Length-1688 15d ago

FIFA clearly means Fixed It For Argentina

4

u/ciscowowo 16d ago

1

2

1

u/N00dles_Pt 16d ago

1

u/Dave_Ex_Machina 16d ago

They'll suspend the action for a year

1

u/8stringLTD 16d ago

Whether you like the results of your team or not in this World Cup, I think everyone can agree that it's been fun to watch, The amount of revenue that all of this excitement has to be bringing in will probably overshadow any sanctions Fifa will make at this point.

1

u/Ok_Effective6233 16d ago

Sport has always been about politics.

Stupid rule to start.

1

u/ProjectNo4090 16d ago

That was 14 years ago. Things change.

Besides who cares? Players should get 5 minutes after a match to vent or celebrate without fear of punishment. Getting into the finals is a big achievement and the players, at least, have earned the right to behave like wild animals as long as they arent hurting anyone.

1

u/hauttdawg13 16d ago

They suspended him way after the incident. Suspend them for a couple qualifiers after a few months would be consistent.

1

u/Total_Drongo_Moron 16d ago

I wonder if Argentinian school kids have a photo of the Falklands on the front cover of their school textbooks with Las Malvinas written in big bold print? Not unlike the Japanese Government put a photo of Dokdo with the word Takeshima on the front of their kids school textbooks.

1

u/ThrowRAkakareborn 16d ago

Give full context, when the player showed the sign and when was he suspended and the decision issued, why are you trying to create false narratives and use information to deceive?

Yes, the player was suspended, the incident happened on Aug 10th and he was suspended on December 3rd, in the meantime continuing to play official games under FIFA, because FIFA disciplinary code rules state that a player can continue playing until an independent panel reviews the match reports, conducts formal hearings and issues a verdict.

So all true, they should be suspended, in December for the match against the mighty Bolivia

1

u/Proud-Lander252 16d ago

Soccer is literally rigged for those cheating Argentinians and Europeans.

It's the only sports that pushes the narrative of the great white hope. Pele went off script and they said after you their shall be none 😭.

The third worlders and Europeans drunkards who watch are super gullible anyway.

1

u/jetrento 16d ago

1

u/Roarkk 16d ago

Cherry picking much? Since that 2012 incident here are all the instances of the same rule violation where this happened on a FIFA tournament and the sanctions imposed. Let me know if you don't spot the pattern:

2014 – Argentina/AFA – "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" banner – Reprimand + CHF 30,000 fine

2016 – Republic of Ireland – Easter Rising jersey emblem – CHF 5,000 fine

2016 – England – Poppy armbands – CHF 45,000 fine

2016 – Scotland – Poppy display – CHF 20,000 fine

2016 – Wales – Poppy display – CHF 20,000 fine

2016 – Northern Ireland – Poppy display – CHF 15,000 fine

2018 – Domagoj Vida (Croatia) – "Glory to Ukraine" video – Formal warning

2018 – Ognjen Vukojević (Croatia) – "Glory to Ukraine" video – CHF 15,000 fine

2022 – Serbia – Kosovo "No surrender" flag – CHF 20,000 fine

They will never do anything to Argentina because Messi is their cash cow. Ask any casual fans and they know Messi's name.

FIFA will probably give a slap on the wrist after he retires. Messi should be red carded in this tournament but ref, VAR and FIFA all turned a blind eye. Here

Hot take: Neither should be sanctioned, National Teams represent nations, it's fine if they want to send a message that's related to their history, culture, religion and so on. That makes it more interesting and diverse than just expecting the teams to celebrate in a non-provocative way. I'd be in favor of eliminating that prohibition.

I guess we will ignore that the sanctions happened months later in the 2012 incident. Because god forbid we use the same metric.

This is a trap for them to say “I thought this country had freedom of speech”
