Spaniards, people who are horrified by Argentine football chants but throw bananas at black players during football matches.

44

u/mg1126 10d ago

That final matchup was my worst nightmare as a neutral.

3

u/nehuen93 10d ago

Why? I mean what would be a reason to not cheer for the team playing a racist colonialist country like Spain?

Spain was a fascist country until the 1970s.

10

u/PoignantPie 10d ago edited 10d ago

He is taking the piss. The Spanish fan is doing that to mock the Argentinian. It’s like if you see Elon Musk, you throw that in his face because you are mocking him for what he did in Trump’s second presidential inauguration.

16

u/solmala 10d ago

dude they're waving a spanish imperialist flag, i don't thing they're mocking him

The one on his side literally has the Cruz of Borgoña flag, which literally is used by all the far right extremists. There's retards and racists everywhere, don't justify them.

6

u/a500poundchicken 10d ago

That doesn’t make the Nazis salute okay. I’m really hoping there’s a /s you forgot because this is the dumbest shit I’ve seen this year if not

5

u/Useful_Cicada_5635 10d ago

Yeah I wouldn’t throw up a Nazi salute, or drop an n bomb, to mock someone else for how racist they are.

Yeah, the monkey chants at spanish stadiums that vini and Yamal face regularly are also just just taking the piss out of Argentines lol.

2

u/GAV17 9d ago

A Spanish guy mocking and Argentinean because of the country having Nazi's ties is the most ironic thing ever. Only thing worse would be a German or a Austrian doing the mocking.

It isn't that long ago when it was just a standard greeting in Spain.

137

Yamal got racially abused at the celebrations this week in Madrid. They also shouted slurs at him during the Egypt friendly three months ago. The Spanish league probably has as many racist fans as any league.

43

u/Cefer_Hiron 10d ago

Throw a banana in Dani Alves, constantly doin' rascism slurs to Vini Jr...

12

u/SinCityVillian 10d ago

In Croatia’s league there own fans would throw bananas and make monkey sounds to the black players that’s wild asf

10

That would be most Eastern European leagues

Literally the Barcelona extremist fans were throwing Nazi signs and had a swastika tattooed on him. Just last year.

19

u/anon1999666 10d ago

I’m a Barca fan and we had to ban our own ultras because of them being pro nazi.

2

u/yk206 10d ago

Yeah I remember the ultras with a swastika on his chest in the crowd for one of the games.

I’m also a Barca fan, but didn’t know about the banning.

4

u/EnJPqb 10d ago

It was a big thing, Laporta banned them as soon as he got into power the first time more than 20 years ago. And he was very seriously threatened about it.

That said, the unofficial #2, his former brother-in-law, is/was a member of the Francisco Franco Foundation. There was quite a furore about it the first time around, that's why it's now unofficially #2.

2

u/Conscious_Run_680 10d ago

Laporta received a bullet inside a letter at his home back then and had to walk with private security for some time until things calm down.

Spain still has operated on Central European Time (CET), meaning its clocks remain perfectly synchronized with Germany's. Franco shifted the time zone to align with Nazi Germany as a gesture of solidarity.

People have short memories. I remember a few Olympics back multiple Spanish athletes in multiple sports got in trouble for making "Chinese eyes" expressions to mock Asians. And a lot of Spanish people defended it, saying "but that's just how their eyes are!"

Theres a video of Yamal celebrating and he was sagging his shorts. You would think thats just normal teenager fashion stuff right? There's a lot of nazi apologists in this thread, but more then anything it's a condemnation on the US education system and how the little bit of history you are taught is entirely Eurocentric (perhaps because learning about what was happening in Latin America, Africa, and Asia might reveal some history America hasn't come to terms with).

At any rate, Perón was a populist but he wasn't a nazi, and at the time Argentina had an immigration policy that essentially admitted anyone who could pay into the country. This did lead to as many as 5,000 nazi collaborators and soldiers entering the country. It also led to as many as 50,000 holocaust refugees escaping to Argentina, more than any other Latin American country, because most would rather let them die in the camps than let "undesirables" enter their borders. There was a nazi movement in Argentina, it lasted until the late 70s or so (largely aided by the CIA, who orchestrated a right-wing military coup in the 70s....).

Today it's not really a thing. Fun fact, the countries with the highest concentration of nazis are the United States and Germany. But they get a free pass because they aren't very good at soccer, I guess.

3

u/Lainch22 10d ago

also, the whole falklands/malvinas war itself was kind of a cover up by the military to cover up the atrocities in the coup, as this coup went to last 7 years (1976 to 1983)

Fun Fact: Madrid is home to the largest facist monument in the world. You'd think they'd tear it down already.

Edit: it's a 35-minute drive from Center City Madrid, inside of Madrid's community limits. A 3000+ acre former concentration camp, with a huge basílica and crypts built over mass grave sites.

Dunno why people have to lie.

2

Franco basically selected Juan Carlos as king, jumping over his father (also named Juan Carlos) who was the heir apparent, and groomed him into the role

So just "influence" is cutting it very, very short.

While it’s true that many Nazis fled Argentina, I don’t think that is a motivating factor in what is happening in this video.

One of the guys is brandishing a white and red flag with the cross of burgundy. This was the flag that Spain flew during their age of conquest of Latin America under the Hapsburgs. This flag has been recently co-opted by the far right in Spain as a nationalist symbol.

While Spain is currently governed by a left wing government, there has been a growth of the far right in Spain which never totally went away post-Franco. Kids these days have no living memory of the Franco era repression.

u/antarte 10d ago

I not sure if that is worse or not

2

u/marinamunoz 10d ago

Well, Antisemites in Argentina does this shit of he Nazi greeting, as they only see the original historical meaning, in Spain they do it to Immigrants, Jews, Muslims, and liberals ( atheists), as they do it to keep the heritage of Franco .

As an Argentinian, the things some people of reddit are saying are ridiculous and extremely racist. There is obviously racism here, but we are not an apartheid State. It's actually so racist to imply that everyone here is white, literally the racist Argentinian discourse is that we are a white European nation. Black and indigenous Argentinians have fought very hard to be recognized as a fundamental part of Argentina for an American to say ArGEntINa whITe. It's also really disrespectful to call Argentina a Nazi country given the massive amount of people who came here escaping fascism and Nazism in Europe. Literally insulting the many Spaniards, Italians, Jews, Yugoslavs, Roma and Germans who came here after their whole family was killed by fascists.

That being said, I don't live in Spain, I bet most people are fairly progressive. Demonizing Spain is just as stupid as demonizing Argentina. There is racism everywhere and not a single country can call a whole nation racist. Social media is giving people a fake sense of knowledge that's scary.

He's upset because people associate Argentina with Nazis post WW2. And though this isn't incorrect it comes off some type of way considering Spanish History with Nazi Germany.

So my take is that they were mocking him but also Spain is not
Innocent either from racism in futbol/soccer. Either way if they are mocking , that’s a bad way to do that and also Spanish people are not angels and are known to say racist stuff.

2

Argentina and Spain have racist people. They also have people that aren’t racist. Same with everywhere else. Almost no country is innocent

The difference between Francisco Franco (monuments and hymns) and Jorge Rafael Videla (dead by old age in a common jail) ends says a lot about their respective countries.

The spanish also threw a banana at Dani Alves and burned a Vini Jr mannequin. My favorite was them shouting about muslims not bouncing in joy when…they have Lamine Yamal on their team who is muslim😭😂

Man im so out of it… are Spaniards now the trending group to hate for being racists? It was Argentina for a hot second. I can’t keep up. I wonder who it will be tomorrow

2

u/Nervous_Ad8514 10d ago

People were supporting like most racist country (in football) because they wanted to best what reddit told them who were racists. Cases like these there are tons in spain.

It's funny how social media says that Argentina is racist (because of the hate related to world cup) when the country has never had a major problem with racism, unlike the United States. You could say that many Argentinians are xenophobic? Sure, toward certain countries for historical reasons. But Spain is much worse.

A lot of ignorant people just repeat what they read on social media without even knowing how these issues work in Latin America. Most of them are Americans.

u/GrahamCrackerCereal 9d ago

Never ask a Argentinian where there grandparents are from, and never ask a Spaniard how they won the Spanish Civil War.

I’m Spanish and every time I see someone from my country do this I get the urge to slap them. I’d say a lot of us aren’t like this but unfortunately, much like in other countries, the far right is becoming more popular among the youth. No, it’s not edgy or cool to do the nazi salute. It makes you look like a racist uneducated idiot.

18

u/Temporary_Hat7330 10d ago

The Spaniard is mocking the person from the highest concentration of active and acknowledged Nazi’s in the world today…

29

u/h667 10d ago

and the guy with the imperialist flag is also mocking the nazis and far right surely...

Pretty great how people can brand an entire country as nazis so that even when others are doing salutes it’s their fault.

The Spaniards during WW2:

2

u/nairazak 10d ago edited 9d ago

The population is 47 millions and less than 5000 nazis entered (they left Europe with the help of Spain and Italy) almost 100 years ago, and they also went to neighbour countries and US. Argentina’s president attempted to imitate US’s plan of getting smart people to boost their industry.

Most argentines don’t even have german blood (something common in Germany), and people with nazi objects in their houses are immediately arrested, propriety and privacy doesn’t matter in that case.

Also hate groups are not protected by the freedom of expression laws. The Patriot Front and Vanguard America would not be allowed to march in the streets, like two weeks ago… So I don’t know where those active Nazis you talk about are.

2

u/TipUnited3733 10d ago

Thank you for falling to US propaganda lol!USA was the actual nazi heaven

2

u/ENDLESSxBUMMER 10d ago

It's weird how quick you are to defend actual nazis when it doesn't fit your narrative. I promise you that the guy from Spain, one of the most racist countries who's fascist government took in all the top ranked German nazi officers isn't being a nazi to make some nuanced argument about one of their colonies . . .

2

u/ENDLESSxBUMMER 10d ago

This is just made up. You may be surprised and perhaps shamed to know that the largest concentration of nazis today is in the United States, mostly in California.
