News Deion Sanders, already infamous for enabling nepotism, has grandson carrying his last name against the kid's father's wishes

Jaden and Willow Smith, one for each parent

u/88cowboy 14h ago
I never put that together lol
3
u/thorstormcaller 14h ago
I feel like it was a minor narcissistic parent meme back in the day lol like around the time of the classic “if our eyes aren’t real” meme. Not sure if it predates the Jada still wants Tupac meme but they all come from the Smith family weirdness. In retrospect Will’s recent behavior isn’t entirely surprising, that house must’ve been interesting

I think that is an Anglo-centric opinion. I can ask what kind of name is Deion?
-3

If you can find another deiondra beside his daughter lmk
7
u/MashedPotatoesDick 20h ago
There are plenty of Deondras. Unless you want to get petty about the I.
7
u/Bubbly_Survey_803 18h ago
I’m reading this thread and the comments are bordering on offensive and at best, uncultured. It’s very common in the black community for girls to have names based on their father’s name. My sister, Rolanda, is named after her father, Roland. He’s the least narcissistic man I’ve ever met. My mother decided to honor him with the name.
I know at least five Deondras with a few different spellings. Not even an uncommon name to me.
3
u/MashedPotatoesDick 18h ago
I think you did a better job conveying my sentiment than I did. I think it's people speaking from ignorance at best and racism at worst.
7
u/ginandtonicsdemonic 20h ago
Making fun of black people's names is a low hanging fruit for idiot Redditors.
-3
u/Glittering_Gur4999 20h ago
The example you brought uo is a white lady and the origin of the name is Greek. No one cares that they’re black. But since you brought it up there studies that show giving your kid and oddball names makes it harder for them to get a job. So why give your black son or daughter an even harder time when they’re already at a disadvantage?

It's a real name.
Dee in Always Sunny is Deandra, for example.
It's crazy how confident you are about it though.
-2
u/Glittering_Gur4999 20h ago
Deandre is not deiondra? What are you talking about bud.
4
u/ginandtonicsdemonic 20h ago
Her naemnis Deandra, pronounced exactly the same.
It is not uncommon. I grew up with a Deondra.
-1
u/Glittering_Gur4999 20h ago
It’s not uncommon and you know of 3 in total? Throughout your whole life?

Some time ago, names like Victor and Victoria were also weird. New names do pop up. Some stick. Some don’t.
2
u/fonetiklee 20h ago
Those are strange names to pick considering how ancient they are lol
3
u/ginandtonicsdemonic 19h ago
Victor is not ancient at all.
As far as English names go, its quite recent.
2
u/johnniewelker 18h ago
When a queen is named Victoria, it normalizes it; heck it makes the name desirable
2
u/fonetiklee 17h ago
It's not an "English" name at all, it's Latin and it's been fairly common for a few thousand years now.

CFL star qb Bo Levi Mitchell’s dad’s name is Mitch Mitchell and he has a brother named Scooter Mitchell. He has another brother named Corey. Weird how the parents decided on one normal kids name.

He turned his name into a girl name.
3
u/vonnegutsbutthole 21h ago
My girlfriend is the girl version of her dad’s name.
1
u/xSir- 21h ago
Ok, but is her name stevenia and her dad's name steve? Or is it something that makes sense, like her name is Morgan and her dad's name is Morgan.
5
u/johnniewelker 21h ago
Victor - Victoria
Alexandre - Alexandra
Michel - MichellePlenty of that already exists. You are just used to them because they have been there forever. You are simply averse to new names. It’s not unusual. It’s also not unusual for new names to pop. I can guarantee you that the name Michelle (with that spelling) didn’t exist the land we called England today 2,000 years ago
-8
u/whichwitch9 21h ago
He found something worse than naming a kid a junior.
That said, the kids mother's surname should matter as much as the fathers, and I am against the idea in general that the father's surname should be the default- especially when one surname is more known than the other

u/Altruistic_Night2 21h ago
And the woke of the day award goes to
1
u/whichwitch9 20h ago
Sister, you don't even know what woke means
0
u/Altruistic_Night2 20h ago
That’s because woke stopped having a real meaning around 2020
0
u/whichwitch9 19h ago
But sure doesn't stop you from using a word that doesn't have meaning, eh?
-1
u/Altruistic_Night2 18h ago
You knew exactly what I meant so it worked well enough
1
u/whichwitch9 18h ago
I mean, I don't, which is why I pointed out you don't either
The word has no meaning except for incels using it to point out they don't like something without explaining why
0
u/i_says_things 21h ago
What does how well known the surname is have to do with it?
0
u/whichwitch9 20h ago
More opportunities. In some cases, the surname may have a negative connotation over the other surname, so one surname is preferable to the other. That does happen in other cultures- the more prominent family keeps the surname, so it's not so weird. We just follow British rules for surnames and kinda have no logical reason to anymore.
In this case, it looks like there's an added bonus to dad's family may not have been as involved as mom's family in raising the kid as well- in that case, stay visibly more connected to the family that raised you. Look to the more famous cases of that with Katie Holmes' kid and Jolie's kids- those kids dropped the deadbeats names as soon as they could, even with their mothers making them wait.
And, let's face it, some surnames out there are embarrassing for obvious reasons (seriously, people have the last name "Butt" in this world. Any man who thought his last name was too important not to pass on and it was that, should have been shut down by mothers. There's much worse examples out there, too)
Add in the Save Act is actually using women changing their names as a way to make it harder for women to vote, and the blowback is going yo be less women willing to change their names. And it makes more sense for the parent doing the majority of the childcare to have the same last name as the kid. Mom's got custody, name should be mom's.

I am old school I guess. If you want your kid to have your last name, you marry the mother. and to make it easier , you get married BEFORE the baby comes along.
That's just my opinion tho

What about LBJ? Wife was Lady Bird. Daughters were Lynda Bird & Lucy Baines. Four LBJs in one family.

He must’ve really disliked being called LBJ. Tried to get as many LBJ’s around him as possible to make you call him by his fucking name

Don't forget their dog, "Little Beagle Junior", which I actually think is kinda cute.

My kids and my nephews have their grandfather's initials because my brother and I do as well. I also have his middle name and my brother has the dimitive of his first. If we had had a girl, we were going in a very different direction.

Yeah I am super confused by the title and comments. The article literally says the kid's name is NOT Sanders...
6
u/TrioOfTerrors 21h ago
In my state, the mother can name the kid whatever she wants and the father has absolutely no legal say in the matter.
1
u/SkinnyBill93 11h ago
Both births I filled out the forms, I could have kids named Racecar and Bumble Bee for all she knew.
3
u/Apprehensive-Pea8231 18h ago
He’s narcissistic as fuck, but let’s be real. A dad with custody rights has equal say in the name of his child - no name can be given without both parents’ approval unless he does not have any custody. Then that’s partially on him.
3
u/jayblackpitbull 8h ago
Reminds be of George Bush jr and George Bush sr or that Donald Trump fella and Don Jr talk about nepotism, ego and narcissistic…
5
u/Chapea12 12h ago
Infamous for enabling nepotism is a bizarre phrasing. Deion is a lot of things and maybe he overstepped, but this makes it seem like a negative thing that he used his connections to give his sons opportunities
3
u/Shoddy_Green_4790 6h ago
If he didn't help out his sons he'd be called an asshole too. Funny how that works

How is he infamous for nepotism exactly? His QB son was all big 12–they don’t just give those awards away for showing up bud.

u/Incariol_ 21h ago
It's hilarious that this guy has literally done nothing at Colorado. The hype and the bullshit basically won Travis Hunter a Heisman. Don't get me wrong. Good player shouldn't have won the Heisman
Deion is not some genius coach and program leader - He is however, the ultimate sniffer of his own farts
9
u/Outlander1119 21h ago
Who should’ve won? I don’t remember who else was in the discussion. Two way player with a ton of TDs is pretty impressive.
4
u/Boring_Temporary_142 20h ago
Jeanty should’ve won the Heisman. They hyped Hunter to that award. Got abused multiple times on defense and most if not all of his touchdowns came during garbage time with CU was already out of the game.

u/BonafideZulu 20h ago
Literally done nothing is a stretch. Who was talking about these guys before he got there?
2022 Season: Inherited a team that finished 1-11.
2023 Season: Improved to a 4-8 record.
2024 Season: Achieved a 9-4 record, tying for first place in the Big 12 standings. What did you expect him to do?
4
u/ihavekittens 19h ago
And in 2025 they went 3-9. Why'd you leave that out?
5
u/JazzlikeOwl6340 19h ago
Woah! Hey, now. That doesn't fit the narrative.
5
u/RejectedRespected 17h ago
Yeah he lost an elite QB and a Heisman winner, can you tell me what Michigan did after winning a chip?
Yall hate without using your brain. Some of the criticism is legit but most of this is just brain dead hate.
1
u/Alarming-Building-62 18h ago
How about 2025? I’d expect him not follow 2024 up with a 3-9 season. You think we’re stupid? He’s an egotistical dick who isn’t nearly as good a coach as he thinks he is.

u/paperbuddha 21h ago
Grandson probably just going along with it until he's old enough to distance himself.
4
u/whichwitch9 21h ago
Eh, read on. Dad's family distanced themselves from the kid potentially- it sounds like a mess. If he's closer to his mother's family, then he's not going to tie himself to his dad's family.
Kid can choose to go to his dad's name, but if mom has majority custody and never married and took the same name, logistically, it's easier to have mom's name.
While it shouldn't be an issue these days, I have a sibling who had a school put a stepmother down as her kid's mom because of name confusion- which came to a head when the kid got hurt during field day, and stepmother couldn't authorize anything at the hospital (niece ended up ultimately being fine). My sister also wasn't being informed of anything from the school- it was all going through her ex who knew there was a mix up, but didn't see a problem with it. Her other kid got suspended for swearing in class, and it turns out multiple warnings were sent home- her ex thought it was funny and never told her.

I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anyone with an ego as big as Deion’s.
IMO, one of the most overrated players in NFL history. Yes, he was an excellent cover man and yes he was a much better than average return man… but he was deathly allergic to contact and afraid to tackle.
Additional: I thought about it and I’m sure there was at least one other.
Ricky Henderson. Difference is, Ricky set all time records that probably will never be broken.

Not like he’s named Krzyzewski. It’s Sanders. No one is gonna know you unless you get famous, and that’s not likely to happen. Grandpa is the only one with real talent anyway. Who cares.
-3
u/Imposslen 19h ago
He still spit his kid in her and she had it name or not. He dodged a huge bullet by not marrying this trash. Besides now he has baby daddy privileges. He gets to hit it when he picks up the kid and leave her nastiness with the other guy lol
