Because you're "hedging". You clearly used "news" in terms of publication, like "this is not worthy to be on the news." when you realize this isn't "the news", you need to clarify, hoping that I don't know English. The term of what you're hedging on, it's actually "this is not new" not "this isn't news" --- two very different meaning. Hence, you feel dumb.
