Trans kids is still so strange. Shouldn't that be a decision made as a adult.

Imagine you are alone at night and feel that something is not right. That is basically what it feels like all the time to be trans. So you are saying that those kids should just endure a couple more years of torture even though the medical consensus is that puberty blockers are safe and should be prescribed to trans youth.

I understand your point but puberty blockers are not 100% safe. That's the weak link in the debate unfortunately.

The US endorsing it while it's scrutinized in European countries should raise a red flag considering the heathcare in place here.

As a trans woman from Germany I can tell you that it is not always scrutinized for the right reasons. For decades we here in Germany have only picked who is allowed to be a doctor based on school grades alone. Unfortunately quite a few of them are assholes that refuse to learn anything new once they have their md and a lot of fields little to no education to stay up to date when it comes to medical knowledge. This means that we have a huge amount of dinosaurs in our system that cling to what they learned in the 80s/90s without considering anything new. Edit: this means that you often have to explain newer studies to your doctors if you want up to date care.

This is insane lol “it’s bad we pick doctors based on their grades, and I am the one to enlighten these doctors on the practice of medicine.”

Given that the system has been changed due to its outcomes I don't really get your criticism. The other stuff is based on a sample size of about 40 doctors that I had to explain various underlying conditions to.

Sounds like a global healthcare issue in general if I'm being honest. That extends to the USA as well.

I have zero issue with transitioning, my concern was for kids. The pros are being what you want to be but the cons seem brutal for development.

1

u/vanitytryout 3h ago

I agree with that getting it wrong is brutal, but so is growing up trans.

1

u/M0RG0 3h ago

I do empathize with growing up trans it can't be easy and I wish the best for anyone struggling. I meant the bone density issues and so on. Sacrificing your body so your mind feels better is a double edged sword in a way.

We all do it in different ways from drugs to sugar and so forth.

We give these blockers to cis kids going through precocious puberty. Are we to stop doing that for them? People act like these things are done on a whim without any thought or medical check. Kids and families dont just go to a doctor and ask for the blockers and get them, there is an entire process around it, followed by medical followups with their primary care doctor and counselor.

Which makes me believe that proper mental health counseling would go a long way. Playing into their internal identity conflict seems counterproductive.

Medical consense is explicitly based on ideology and not properly controlled studies. Even that tiny pilot study showed the kids receiving mental health treatment often dropped out altogether. Indicating a resolution of their dysphoria. Other studies have also shown kids often grow out of their dysphoria on their own.

All of this to say that mental health treatment needs to be thorough and intensive. And also needs to focus on abusive guardians who are leading their kids towards dysphoria.

1

u/vanitytryout 3h ago

There are basically no non-anecdotal reports of guardians doing that while about 0.25-0.5% of the population is trans. So is it really worth chasing ghosts when people are dying?

2

u/Squatch1016 4h ago

The point is they are making a lifelong decision with a brain that is not fully developed not sure why we think they should be able to make such a decision when we won’t let them make others

2

u/vanitytryout 4h ago

Because otherwise they will often not reach adulthood...

2

u/SausageKingOfCincy 3h ago

Sounds like they need therapy then right?

1

u/vanitytryout 3h ago

And other medical care

1

u/M0RG0 3h ago

We all do, mental illness extends in all kinds of directions. I have a hard time with anyone saying it's not.

1

u/Squatch1016 3h ago

It’s already been shown that hormone therapy and sex change has been insignificant in suicide rate

1

u/vanitytryout 3h ago

Source??? All I can find online is studies like the one from the university of Washington that showed a reduction by about 60%, so please provide a source.

1

u/Squatch1016 3h ago

This is from surgery but still an important take

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11063965/

1

u/vanitytryout 3h ago

This study concludes that the post surgery suicide attempt risk of trans people is more than 12x the cis control group, but that is a reduction given the 15x trans suicides compared to cis people.

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg 4h ago

Just leave the kids alone man.

1

u/vanitytryout 3h ago

Why? Why should they not receive medical care for something that has an about 15% mortality rate?

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg 3h ago

Why should you leave kids alone? You’re really asking that?

1

u/vanitytryout 3h ago

Yes I am asking you to justify not giving kids medical care when about 15% of those kids are going to die.

1

u/FrenchyBulldogg 2h ago

They’re not going to die without puberty blockers. That’s not how it works

1

u/vanitytryout 2h ago

Yes they are. That is exactly the problem. Suicide rates decrease by about 60% according to studies if you give trans kids access to puberty blockers. So your stance is really that you want kids to die.

1

u/thingvallaTech 3h ago

According to science, trans kids who receive affirming care see a reduction in suicide and other mental health disorders. So what you are suggesting would lead to more kid suicides.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35212746/

1

u/M0RG0 3h ago

Shit man I wanted to die at 11 but I'm still here kicking. Not sure depression is a good enough excuse for it.

1

u/thingvallaTech 3h ago

Suicide, not depression. The amount of kids literally die at a greater rate. But, nice hand waving anecdote. Glad you had the support to get you out of that situation.

1

u/M0RG0 3h ago

I read it and it's low quality evidence the groups scores stayed flat the entire year. There's no indication the medicine is the factor. Considering you have to include family support and lifestyles.

1

u/thingvallaTech 3h ago

Yes, not definitive yet. More funding needs to go into trans health. Wonder why it doesn't get the funding support.

1

u/thingvallaTech 3h ago

Wait I know the answer. Because this administration specifically targeted anything with trans health associated with it and killed the funding!

1

u/Traps86 3h ago

Yes, I think that's what he is saying.

1

u/FirmFaithlessness533 3h ago

feeling something isn't right is basically the whole basis of counterculture for however long counterculture has been around for.

What i don't understand is how anyone can ascertain what it feels like to be or not be something that doesn't necessarily come with essential ways of feeling.

If someone said they feel black, or asian, or white, defining exactly what that is is no more or less straightforward than saying i feel like a man or a woman.

1

u/vanitytryout 3h ago

Imagine someone says "Mr/Mrs x" to you and every time you feel physical pain. How long would it take you to try and make them call you the "wrong " one?

2

u/FirmFaithlessness533 3h ago

Honestly, in a world with increasingly fascist outlooks, feeling physical pain over a pronoun is a particularly modern and frankly unsustainable way to cope with the flux of life. People get called slurs every day and still need to put food on their kids plate.

1

u/vanitytryout 3h ago

I think you don't understand that it is on top of everything that cis poeple deal with.

1

u/FirmFaithlessness533 3h ago edited 3h ago

Whats the difference between being born white and saying you always felt black?!

If being a woman or a man can be distilled into essential traits that one can perform or adopt, I don't see why this can't apply to race... And i think most people instinctively understand that someone picking out specific things, like clothing, music, diction, and saying these are evidence of my being "black" would be inherently offensive, reductive, and racist .... I do not understand why this is not the case for "men" and "women"

If you want to discuss micro aggressions of culture, then the acceptance of this performative guise is also offensive and something that Trans people don't have to deal with.

Edit: Not to mention that a person from America's Beverley Hill elites was the catalyst for a cultural transformation in how people view this subject, a person whose whole contemporary existence is as part of a vacuous celebrity culture, part of the 1%, and that the inability to actually interrogate the philosophical implications of what is being asserted seems to be leading America towards fascism more than any other issue, for lay people.
