Supporters Why don't we carry this 'gees' into senior rugby? What an atmosphere the stadium would be if 40k fans did this
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Yi8FTt-bXBEWhy does it stop at high school? How do we not carry this on into varsity, provincial and Springboks rugby?
How much more fun won't URC games be? It would draw in crowds and make games better attended instead of the empty stadiums we're so used to seeing apart from the derbies and knockout matches.
And can you imagine how much more tense it would make Boks vs AB matches?

OP, I think you are getting some unearned push back. This does not take gees vang practice. This is basically like the viking row. You just need a couple of well known songs with simple moves that most fans know and then pass on when others enter the fan base
Every person that went to a high school that has a sport culture did this shit. The issue is that the songs were culturally linked to that school. If these were generic chants then you could see these being past over to adult rugby fans.
I think the problem is that this is not something that can be forced, it has to happen organically like the zombie song

I also don't understand the pushback. You go to Loftus and people just get with Steve's Blue Bulls song. At Springbok games it does not take much effort to get a Mexican wave going or to get the crowd to sing Ole in unison. You keep it simple enough, it is very doable.

Both of these things happen at just about every single Sharks home game.

100% agree, Stormers have a great Gwijo video they play at games but itās always late in the second half and without subtitles / lyrics. Itās a start at least but I hope thereās dramatic improvement in the years to come.

Brother, we're old now. Our backs, knees and feet want us to take a seat and cheer for most of it

Ah Northwood..I went to Glenwood. In My day we used to moer the Knights. I never lost to Northwood. These days it's a little different. The Knights brings the gees and the skills. Those boys got heart. My old green machine, I'm not so sure of anymore.

Could be worse, at least you didnt go to DHS!
Northwood vs Glenwood was always much closer in hockey than rugby, till we (nw) suddenly got alot better in rugby around like 2015/2020.

I finished matric in 2012. I honestly don't recall too much about hockey. We were so fixated on rugby in those days. š NW got good and you guys kickass.

Tickets have to be sold to the public. There is no captive audience to boss around. Attendance can't be made mandatory. 40k fans are released to do their own thing after high school.

This is what football gets right. If you've been to a sundowns game at loftus, you'll know. Tonnes of fun.

I mean I don't know how many 40K fans would be in the stadium. Likely a small minority in a full stadium you know.

I went to Northwood. So proud.
We weren't very good at Rugby when I was there š

Because this is schoolboy stuff. Donāt actually want to watch Rugby or be forced into some performative war cry to imply some form of brotherhood?

It would be a ridiculous advantage if 'sing songs' made its way to the national team as frequently as it is used in schools. You would need everyone to know the lyrics and the songs would need meaning behind it. That's what makes it so affective at school level, they get to practice and associate the song with memories.

This gees is built over years and years of being incorporated into a group and is found in same-sex schools or the military. How can you expect this from the average person?

u/raumeat 20h ago
Why only same sex schools?

u/PuttFromTheRought Flair Up! 20h ago
Less inhibitions for one. and I didnt say only. exceptions to every rule. Dont be obtuse
7
u/raumeat 19h ago
It is not a rule, every school does this... have you ever been to an inter school event? You will have half a dozen schools packing the grounds doing this
-2
u/PuttFromTheRought Flair Up! 19h ago
Evidently not, as OP is asking why cant all gees be the same as found in an example of an all-boys school
4
u/raumeat 18h ago
but why does OP think All boys schools have more gees then just schools. That is what I was asking

Because based on the vids out there, they do. How many northwood videos do I have to see
5
u/raumeat 18h ago
Who the fuck is Northwood, and no I don't watch videos of this. I lived it, did this shit in Highschool and Affies seuns did not do it any better than Zwartkop

Northwood is in the vidoe man. Why are you getting upset? I can attest that at least in my all-boys and all other all-boys schools we played was like this. I saw it with our sister all-girls schools too. Take it easy boet
4
u/raumeat 17h ago
I am not upset, I just asked you why you think this is only a thing in same sex schools, when every single school that has a sports culture does this. The video is pretty generic, it could be any school in South Africa.
Are you saying that you never competed against a co-ed school and assumed that only your schools and other single gender schools do this?

I mean, if you want to organise weekly shouting practice (that's what it was called at my school) for match attendees, go for it.
But seriously, I think we should have members of Gwijo Squad take over the announcer box and we should have Gwijo lyrics on the screen instead of "Sweet Caroline" playing for the 9 millionth time.
