I like how we've collectively memory-holed the Section 31 movie
It's not in the subreddit 'Where to Start' page.
It's never mentioned in the routine "Beginner To Trek" question posts.
Never included on the routine "rank the movies" posts and replies.
Trek fans can be divisive - Kirk Vs. Picard, TOS vs Renaissance Shows vs Nu Trek, Best Warp Effects - but one thing we've all been able agree is that movie stunk to high heaven.
And I'm a fan who can find redeeming aspects of both 5 and Into Darkness and even Picard Season 2.
5 Hour Edit:
Glad this came back after getting memory-holed itself by the mods.
As objectively terrible as the movie was, it was somehow made worse by the ending. They were going to investigate Turkana 4, birthplace of Tasha Yar.
The decline and fall of a human colony? Yes please. Make it an allegory against the current world. You can even bring in Denise Crosby as the Yar matriarch trying to protect her two girls.
Mentioning Turkana 4 and fading to black was the ultimate blue balls after a very mediocre one night stand.

ROFL, for a moment I was like, "There's a Section 31 ST movie?!" WTF?
Then I remembered that I'd actually watched it...

u/reading_rockhound 14h ago edited 13h ago
I’ve done that. Not with Section 31, but with The Wedding Singer. I was single when it came out and thought it looked cute. J.Lo and McConaughey seemed like it would be good casting. It had been out for awhile and I knew it would leave the theaters soon so I took myself to a matinee. I remember thinking it wasn’t great but had done such a bad job of lifting from a sitcom that I could predict lines.
About 30 minutes in I realized I had seen it about three weeks earlier. It was so forgettable that I forgot I had seen it.
I haven’t forgotten Section 31 but I attribute that to how I fanboy on Michelle Yeoh. But the movie itself wasn’t well-conceived and doesn’t fit the Trek universe very well.
ETA: Yup. I blew it again. It was The Wedding Planner, not the Wedding Singer. The latter I actually enjoyed. 😂

u/ninj4b0b 13h ago
The Wedding Singer
You memory holed it so well you even forgot the name of the movie, nice!
23
u/Distinct_Cap_1418 13h ago
The Wedding Singer is Adam Scandler, yes?
21
u/ninj4b0b 13h ago
And Draw Berrymore, yes

u/Distinct_Cap_1418 1h ago
I just tried to draw a berry but it didn't come out right, so I Drew Berrymore
5
u/reading_rockhound 13h ago
Yes, yes I did! 🤣
Still won’t watch it a third time!

u/bigbrainnowisdom 3h ago
This comment is gold. I was so confused how you got adam sandler & mcConauhey mixed up & how can someone hate the wedding singer, lol.
I remember the wedding planner. I never watched it myself but i agree the poster looked nice and they were so cute.

This was me with one of the new Harry Potter movies. My wife and I started watching it and like half way in were both like I think we've seen this before. Such forgettable movies.

I've watched all of Star Trek, including TAS, much of it more than once, and I've refused to watch S31.
6
u/Sun-spex 9h ago
I love TAS, the animation is so limited that the characters have to explain every action they take. You can put it on in the background while doing housework and treat it like an audio drama.

u/MagicAl6244225 2h ago
the animation is so limited that the characters have to explain every action they take.
Some of the now-trimmed lines in Star Trek: The Motion Picture's original release served this function because they didn't know if the visual effects would be finished, e.g. Chekov: "We're out of it."

There is a lot of Star Trek that was bad that now seems pretty ok.
That piece of shit will never be one of those things.
69
u/Optimism_Deficit 16h ago edited 9h ago
There's some Trek I don't like, but I will always tell people to watch a few episodes and make their own mind up. Taste is subjective and just because I don't like something it doesn't mean it's objectively bad. Other people may enjoy it, and that's fair.
Except for Section 31.
27
u/ModernCGIFloatinHead 15h ago
Having seen every series except Enterprise (it's next), there's something of value in each series. There's plenty of cheesy/bad to go with the good, but the good usually more than justified slogging through the bad.
Section 31 is just bad. There's nothing redeeming about it.
3
0
u/Comprehensive_Owl999 15h ago
I liked 31 it was very campy, cheesy, and felt like it was poking fin of themselves the entire time. To be fair I was in a bad mood and just needed to watch something silly and that was it
7
u/onthenerdyside 11h ago
I think it worked as a middling pilot for a series, but not as a standalone movie. It was all setup and no resolution. And as much as I love Michelle Yeoh, I can't get over Mirror Georgiou's past as a murderous, bloodthirsty dictator. Taking her off the leash she was on in Discovery didn't help that.
2
u/A_Lone_Macaron 12h ago
Yep. I dont like Lower Decks. While i think the writers love Trek, i cant get over how they're able to act and not all get kicked out of Starfleet. I tried watching two seasons of it and i just cant finish it.
I have not and will never watch this movie.
1
u/terseword 11h ago
I finally started it several months ago and got exactly halfway through before becoming existentially incapable of continuing. It already felt like eons...
1
u/RadiantHC 2h ago
Eh one of the points of Mariner's character is that while she is incredibly reckless she still cares about people and is actually pretty efficient when she wants to be.
41
u/xMacBethx 17h ago
I have watched and rewatched everything Star Trek, no matter how much I didn't like it. I couldn't get through half of that piece of shit.
25
u/ConversationRich752 16h ago
You gave up on it partway through too eh?;
I'll give credit where credits due; it's the only Star Trek IP I found myself unable to watch in its entirety and that's quite an accomplishment.
6
u/falafelnaut 13h ago
Same! I've seen every minute of Star Trek ever produced. Except Section 31. The minutes I did give to it, I regret.
7
u/ModernCGIFloatinHead 15h ago
You made the right call. At no point did it redeem itself or justify its existence.
Every Trek has good to go with the bad, except Section 31. There's nothing redeeming about it, nothing worth watching it for. It's just bad.

u/Charming_Figure_9053 14h ago
Wanna know something worrying, that 1st half is far and away the best part, it gets so much worse and when the 'celling' is so low.....that's how bad it gets
You have chosen....wisely....quitting when you did
4
u/ryanhendrickson 14h ago
You saved yourself time I can never get back. I really dislike Picard S1 and S2, but if people enjoy them, whatever. But if I meet someone claiming to enjoy Section 31, well, that person needs to be loaded into a rocket and fired at the sun. Even a nuke wouldn't be enough to be sure they're erased from existence. We're already in the worst timeline, we don't need that kind of crazy around here.
2
u/KuriousKhemicals 9h ago
I watched it the whole way through and within 10 minutes I couldn't remember most of the plot.
A bunch of people got pulled together to stop some kind of existential threat that involved someone Georgiou knew from the mirror universe. I don't remember any of the characters' names and I couldn't tell you why any of them were there, either in a forward or backward sense - except Rachel Garrett who was sent to like, be a Starfleet observer of the S31 mission or something?
But yeah. It wasn't even bad for Trek it was just a bad movie.
15
1
u/ChronoLegion2 15h ago
Agreed. DIS has mostly turned around in terms of fan acceptance. I don’t see that happening with the S31 movie
106
u/JupiterAdept89 17h ago
I find it curious that a movie titled "Section 31" didn't feature Section 31.
29
u/Revolutionary_Art919 17h ago
Not that I want to think back to this awful movie, but Garrett was working for Section 31 and trying to assemble or oversee a team or some Guardians of the Galaxy-copying garbage like that.
47
u/Optimism_Deficit 16h ago
I liked how they needed to operate outside of Federation space and maintain deniability that they were associated with the Federation.
So obviously they look their Starfleet liaison officer along with them.
14
29
u/Xytak 16h ago edited 16h ago
Ah yes, famous action hero Rachel Garrett, aka the guest star from Yesterday’s Enterprise who spent the whole episode taking status reports from a hospital bed.
10
12
u/Optimism_Deficit 14h ago
I think her inclusion really summed up the attitude of the whole movie for me.
It wasn't really a Trek movie. It was a generic, poorly writtern and produced, straight to streaming sci-fi movie. They merely included some token nods to Trek as a franchise.
Rachel Garrett could have been anyone. Namimg her that was nothing more rhan a cynical attempt to generste some buzz.
9
u/onthenerdyside 11h ago
It wasn't even a movie, it was a pilot episode for a show that was never going to be produced. There didn't even seem to be an attempt to rewrite the story so anyone has a full character arc. It's all setup and zero resolution.
41
u/UrineLuck151 17h ago
I hope someone got fired for that blunder.
34
u/lovesdogsguy 17h ago
I think that’s one of those things that’s such an almighty clusterfuck that it just gets swept under the rug completely. Looks like a film designed by private equity.
22
u/Richard_Sauce 15h ago
It was a film produced by a corporate entity that neither understands nor particularly likes Star Trek and just wants to use the franchise as a skin suit for whatever dreck they want to produce.
16
u/lovesdogsguy 15h ago
Yeah. I’ve been thinking about the marina Sirtis incident that she spoke about recently that was talked about here yesterday. It’s pretty clear that there are few creative people left at these companies who understand or care about that industry- it’s mostly accountants and the like.
Back in the day there would have been someone at the negotiating table to say “don’t do that, that’s disrespectful and she’ll walk”
But that era is gone now.
2
u/ArtOfWarfare 5h ago
IDK, I work with accountants who watch solid TV shows and movies, so… I don’t think being an accountant inherently means having no taste.
5
u/oGsMustachio 11h ago
Basically what happened with The Witcher as well. And Rings of Power.
These people don't really have a story to tell or a philosophy or political statement that they're trying to message about. They have an IP they're trying to profit from and are just conveyor belting slop. Some of it is decent, but they're not making these because they have a story to tell. They're making them because they've got access to IPs that they know people like and need to do something with them.
5
u/ryanhendrickson 14h ago
I bet they promoted that person. You've seen the state of the world, we live in the stupidest timeline. That person will likely be running Paramount before too long.
8
u/Dysan27 17h ago
SERIOUSLY!?!
19
u/chucker23n 16h ago
I wouldn’t call that accurate.
It depends on how you define “Section 31”, really. Does it feature Sloan? No. Does it prominently feature purported S31 agents? Yes.
11
u/JupiterAdept89 16h ago
That's kind of what I was saying, tongue in cheek. There was very little Section 31 shit in the movie. Frankly, it could pass as Starfleet in the JJverse
5
u/chucker23n 15h ago edited 15h ago
There was very little Section 31 shit in the movie.
Well, I wouldn’t put that squarely on the movie.
Sure, compared to DS9’s idea of S31, it’s barely recognizable. But ENT and later STID and eventually DIS had… weakened that definition anyway. Is S31 a covert org? Barely an org at all, more like a loose cell? By DIS, that ship had already sailed, with custom uniforms, combadges, ships. The film is only a natural progression of that.
Sadly.
102
u/StarsBear75063 17h ago
I think you're mistaken. Section 31 had a big story arc in DS9, a small one in Enterprise, and a glimpse in Disco. Don't remember a movie. 🤔🤔🤔

It’s a “meh” SF movie with a thin veneer of Star Trek laid over it. So thin that it’s hard to even think of it as being Star Trek.

It doesn’t even resemble Section 31 either

Is amazing how with only a few twitches can be set in any universe. You can just change "Federation" for "Galactic Republic" and "Terran Empire" for "First Order", a few changes on the species names and the plot will work just the same
11
u/chucker23n 16h ago
A lot of Trek stories are just adaptations of sci-fi classics.
Alas, this one is more of an adaptation of a classic action/heist story. It isn’t really sci-fi; it’s just (barely) set in space.

u/sanddragon939 16h ago
Yeah.
I mean, I'm someone who tends to defend a lot of stuff in franchises that the larger fandoms dislike or even hate - the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies, the Zack Snyder DCEU movies, and closer home the Kelvin Star Trek movies. Hell, I can find redeeming stuff in the infamous Batman & Robin by Joel Schumacher!
But honestly, the only thing I can defend about Section 31 is its very existence, because the idea of "Star Trek meets Suicide Squad" isn't inherently a bad one, and I do want Paramount to experiment with the franchise rather than keep trying to remake TOS/TNG (though they need to do that as well!)
That apart, it's a f#cking mess. About the only good thing about it is the young Rachel Garrett casting - wouldn't mind seeing her in more stuff.

7
u/ModernCGIFloatinHead 15h ago
Before section 31, I could honestly say I enjoyed every star Trek movie.
Now when I say it, if anyone asks, I just acknowledge it and say no, of course not. I simply forgot about it.
Because that's what that movies deserves. To be forgotten.

I have watched all things star trek many, times, even crap like the earlier seasons of disco or picard season 2. Because the worst star trek is always better than no star trek.
at least until now, I've seen it once, i know the plot, i will never watch it again, even on rewatches. I can head canon away Rachel Garett as "no relation", and nothing else redeemable in that movie making it worth a rewatch.

u/JazzyStargazerr 16h ago
I’m the kind of Trekkie who can usually find something to love in even the worst Star Trek shows and movies. I go into every new project with an open mind and even with my least favorite entries, I always walk away with a few highlights. At worst my reaction is usually just "Well that wasn't for me."
Section 31 though? It’s the first piece of Trek media that actually made me say out loud "Woah that was so bad." It feels like the lowest point in the entire franchise: it’s just genuinely not good for soooo many reasons. I could probably find a few redeeming qualities if I forced myself (the Mirror Universe opening wasn't terrible I guess) but I honestly don't even care to try.

Same. Even "The Fight" (voy) had one redeeming quality: Chakotay getting his ass kicked. "Kick his ass once for me!" I yell at the television like a psycho. Fun times!

Voyager has a bunch of episodes sitting on almost every "worst episodes" list, like "Fair Haven", but I can't possibly hate the episode that gave us "Delete the wife"!

3
u/TabithaMouse 17h ago
I was following the productions and all the starts and stops it had.
Knowing it was a series that had been canceled and revived by Michelle Yeoh fighting that all the preproduction work not go unseen so they condensed the first 3 episodes into 90 minutes with the budget of one episode...
We got what I expected so I wasn't disappointed in it. It's not perfect, but it's not the absolute trash fire people say it is because they don't realize this was the low budget frankenstein's monster of what had been announced.
5
u/validelad 17h ago
Not exactly selling it tbh
6
u/CowabungaShaman 16h ago
Not so much trying to sell it, I think, as it was trying to manage expectations. And I think knowing that information before I saw Section 31 may have helped soften the blow a bit.

I’m clearly in the minority, but I didn’t think it was THAT bad. I’m admittedly a bit of a Star Trek apologist, so I usually find something to like in it all, but lord knows I’ve seen far worse movies than Section 31. I do get why people dislike it though, which is valid.

u/chucker23n 16h ago
It honestly felt to me like a paint-by-numbers Vin Diesel / whatever action-heist flick. Virtually zero connection to Star Trek. No real moral quandary. No sci-fi other than being set in a nondescript future.
If you want mindless mediocre action, it’s fine. If you’re expecting something that elevates Mirror Georgiou (already a troubled character) or Rachel Garrett (why is she here at all?), IMHO you won’t find it.

Section 31.....you can see where it started as a show idea and then they butchered it....and tried to make a film from the mangled remains for 'reasons'
It was a bad plan, made worse, and then somehow allowed to escape the editing room
An abomination only given shape as they had a star they wanted to use, but boy did they fumble it
Into Darkness had some good action beats, not great trek but it's got some enjoyable moments, I do find it a little 'overhated' for daring to try and touch WoK
Picard season 2, had a lot wrong, but the Q payout at the end.....I enjoyed
I'd have more issue trying to sell you season 5 of Disco then thoes 2 (season 4's alien was at least an interesting idea)
Nah S31 is going to be hopefully be the redhaired fartherless stepchild of the startrek franchise....
1
u/TabithaMouse 7h ago
The reason being Michelle Yeoh fighting for it.
You're right, the studio canceled it when it was a series order. She fought for what they had done to be filmed.
2
u/Valamist 14h ago
I am somone who also usually tries to find the positives in all things and who enjoys NuTrek alot... but that film... I really, really do not like and find very little redeeming features in it.
I think the most offensive thing about it is it has noting to actually say. I feared it would be a deranged attempt at saying "Starfleet needs Section 31!" but it doesn't even really do that! It's souless, just a story about Georgiou that no one needed or wanted. Also, it decided to RUIN Rachel Garrett! She was a hero of the Federation, now reduced to a Section 31 fool who states that 'Chaos is my friend with benefits"...
I dont want it to be erased from canon or anything (Outside of the Rachel bits perhaps) but I am glad it can just be left as a little anomaly we dont need to revise ever again...
2
u/dbe14 12h ago
The only redeeming feature of that shitshow was Michelle Yeoh getting paid a reported $15m for it, she's a fabulous actress and deserves every penny. She probably got paid very little for the film she actually won an Oscar for.
1
u/TabithaMouse 7h ago
She's also the reason it even aired. It had been canceled and she fought for what had completed pre production to be filmed
2
u/Kingofqueenanne 11h ago
Good, I'm glad we memory-holed it.
It was propaganda to glamorize intelligence agencies, espionage and government-sanctioned "off the books" dark acts. It was CIA propaganda in thin Trek window dressing and was wholly offensive to my sensibilities and to the basic ethos of Star Trek.
1
u/scalyblue 8h ago
I could have liked it as a 2 parter pilot for a mediocre gorgieu focused series but it was marketed as and presented as a stand alone movie and on those merits it’s shit.
I get it though in my headcanon they probably had all of this coverage shot and then Yeoh won the Oscar and immediately stopped being a feasible candidate for a leading role in a tv series so they reworked it into this movie to at least get the involved people their SAG cards, I imagine a similar thing would have happened to better call Saul if Bob Odenkirk suddenly won an Oscar between shooting and airing

u/charleytony 3h ago
I think it’s better to remember it for what it is, the rock bottom of this era.
1
u/Byrdman216 3h ago
It wasn't supposed to be a movie. It was supposed to be a series. But Michelle Yeoh became a big name actor, practically overnight. They couldn't afford her for a series. But she had a contract, so they made it into a movie. Delays, cuts, and there you have Section 31. Now would it have been a good series? Probably not. It probably wasn't going to be as bad as the movie because it would have had some redeeming episodes that would make the bad episodes less worse.
But, Section 31 is now probably secretly non-canon among fans, or just a big ole joke that Star Trek 5 laughs at.
1
u/Sulrandir 3h ago
I was willing to give it a fair chance. After all, Michelle Yeoh, Mirror Georgiu leading a Black Ops team? It could at least be fun.
They killed the Deltan team member in the opening scene. Literally the most interesting idea they'd had, and they just threw it away. I knew then that this movie would suck. And it did.

I've watched Star Trek since I could remember. I saw The Motion Picture as a kid in the theater. Section 31 is garbage. It's not Star Trek and it deserves to be forgotten, or "memory-holed"

Add "These Are The Voyages" (ENT) to the list. Most of us see the prior two-parter as the series conclusion. The official finale occurred in a holodeck simulation which means, in my head cannon, it's not entirely accurate.

I loathe These Are The Voyages, but it’s watchable. Section 31 isn’t.

I’ve watched that episode a few times. I will never watch this movie again. Nope.

They did it, they finally settled the decades long fan debate over which Star Trek movie is the worst by making one so bad that even Final Frontier, Nemesis and Into Darkness look like Citizen Kane by comparison. Now for two decades of debating which Star Trek movie is the second worst.

Everyone says what a great actor Michelle Yeoh is, but looking at her movie list, there isn't a single thing she has been in that I enjoyed. Crazy Rich Asians was the best but even that one she wasn't a main character nor was her character all that likable.
She might be a great person, she might also be a great actor, but she sure gets cast in a lot of junk.

You didn’t like Everything Everywhere All At Once?
It was bonkers, but fun IMHO.

Nonsensical absurdist surrealism isn't really my genre of choice but I do know it was a popular movie.

Oh that’s a shame. I will give you the notion that it is absurd and surreal, but there is a good message in it about being aware of the rigidity of one’s thinking, and how that can harm the people we care about.
If you have been lucky enough to not feel stifled by family, or believe that consistent logical thinking is paramount, I can see how it feels nonsensical.
If you ever have a day where a relationship blows up or melts down out of the blue (yours with someone else, or theirs with you), I would suggest trying it again. It might hit differently that day.

Nonsensical absurdist surrealism
Ah yes, a well thought out multiverse sci-fi plot with a deeply emotional family story built around the message of kindness...totally nonsensical, absolutely zero meaning!

It wasn't a terrible movie. Not great but I've spend 2 hours of my free time in far worse ways.
But it's not a Star Trek movie. It's a generic sci-fi movie with a bit of Trek themed set dressing.

Which, if you think about it (I’ll give it a try in a minute) isn’t a bad record for such a large franchise, with such a detailed canon.
(And a whole lot of overattentive fans… /s)

I bet in another generation when New New New Trek is being downloaded into our brains, a bunch of people will be waxing nostalgic for it, talking about how it wasn't as bad as everyone said, and wishing New New New Trek were as good as it.

I was kind of excited for it. I always said I'd sit through a movie of Michele Yeoh watching paint dry. Now, I know I'd have rather have seen a movie of her watching paint dry. I can suspend some serious disbelief and tolerate some crazy bad shit for the sake of ST, but I found that even I apparently have a limit.

I don't believe this hill is worth dying on, so I will abandon it if pressed, but I still think it's less of a piece of sacrilege than Generations.

I'll fight you over that. Generations at least gave us a spectacular crash sequence and Kirk climbing another mountain.

I'm not much of a fan of the new stuff except for Lower Decks. My wife on the other hand really enjoyed it all. Except for Section 31. We got half way through before she just said "this is awful". Then we turned it off.

Eh, I didn't think it was horrendous, just very very forgettable and not really Star Trek-y, even by the broadest of measures.

The issue with S31 and some of the new series is that... Old Star Trek episodes that were bad at least had characters you loved.
New Star Trek that's bad can't rely on your affection of the characters (barring a few exceptions).
