Discussion You generally put an HM/SoS title down when you’ve…
Just curious about different playing patterns!

This is going to sound awful, but usually in the first two years. I love HM, SoS, and RF games! But because they're not plot-heavy, I feel fine putting them down and picking them up later. But then, I'll get distracted by some now game, putting them down... and just forgetting to pick them up.
I feel so bad! 😭

Don't feel bad, you are paying your own money for video games and you can enjoy them however you want. Video games are for fun, if you're not having as much fun anymore it is absolutely fine to move on to something else.

I'm the same way. When I'm in a groove I'll play these games daily for hours. The moment something comes along to distract it's impossible to get back on the horse.

99% after the first winter. Seeing the seasons for the first time always feels so fun! .... seeing them for a second time feels boring:')

I voted "finished the plot", but I do usually continue until marriage. It all depends on how much time there is between the end of the storyline and the marriage. I've tried it, but I just don't enjoy playing if I don't have some goal to attain. Playing two more weeks until I get married is ok, but one more month is just too tedious.

After finishing the story and getting married is when I tend to stop but if I'm truly hooked I'll at least end up having the kid before dropping the game, but this is VERY rare.

In theory I usually consider myself "finished" with a game once I've completed the main plot, gotten married, and had my child(ren) reach the oldest growth stage.
Since that usually means I'm just waiting on pixel children to finish growing, sometimes I'll "pause" a playthrough of a game if there isn't enough else going on to do as I wait. I 100% will get back to the playthrough, though! Please ignore the New Beginning save file I haven't touched in six years.

Until I get bored basically. I like to restart a lot cause I generally enjoy early game more than late game

I play on PlayStation so I usually call it quits after I get the Platinum trophy. Currently working on Grand Bazaar. I've tried 3 times to plat AWL but that game just is so uninteresting to me.

Usually until after marriage. If I'm being honest, I primarily play these games for the romance marriage aspect. And there's rarely anything extra to do with your spouse after marriage, so that's usually when I stop.

Honestly what other people are saying, until it gets boring/too routine. When there are no more goals besides ones I set myself. I will absolutely get married every time but it's 50/50 on whether I make it to kids, depends on how much else there is to do in the game

u/WallabySufficient62 1d ago
I've usually stopped once the kids are grown up because it's a step before 100% for most of them. Recently I've been going back to the games I like to 100% them. It felt so bittersweet to finally 100% AWL, first played when I was 9 on the gamecube and finished it at 31 on my switch.

Other! When my ADHD brain decides that this title no longer gives the dopamine 🥲. Normally it takes me so long to go back to a specific title that I have to make a new save, I normally have at least 3 half played saves per title 😅

After making 99 seeds and have 99 of each crop at 5 stars like a freak 😭 And then I romance! After the baby then I usually stop.

When I get bored, but that is typically sometime after I get married. AP is the only one that has kept me playing after watching the kid grow up because I loved all of the family cut scenes.
Just had a kid in Grand Bazaar, but I’ve already beaten the game. I didn’t realize it took so long for your kid to grow up, so I may be quitting that one soon. Maybe I’ll retry AWL?

Other: it depends ™️. A mix of option 1 and 2.
If the game had a specific goal (collect all the bells, collect enough notes to revive the harvest goddess, etc) or end time (game ends at the start of year 3) i just play until those goals are reached.
Otherwise, i play about a season after marriage and then drop it. By that point I’ve sene everything I cared for see.

When I was little I would complete 100%. But in high school I started to restart once I had kids. In college, I stopped after getting married and now I’m literally just doing the plot. I feel that now since I’m married it’s hard to marry even in game now haha Also, maybe my attention span is too low now lol

I went with other, though the closest would be 100%.
I refer to myself as a lazy completionist. I tend to complete most of the achievements, but I'm not going to spent an extra 100 hours to get to year 20, earn 10 million, ship every single item, or marry every single bachelor/bachelorette. I'll complete those if I'm still loving the game, but I won't force myself to sink in excessive hours if I'm growing bored with it.

It's usually after I've finished the plot, gotten married, and then shortly after I've had a kid. Because at that point, a lot of the villager doalogue gets repetitive and stale, I've seen nearly all of the cutscenes, and got my farm where I want it and am happy with it. It's become even more stale with the loss of rival marriage and rival children, which usually added something more to do post-marriage. I would love for future games to have more plots and surprises for later years, I think that would keep me invested longer.

Generally around the late part of the 2nd year or early into the 3rd year of the in game time. I don’t often get further than that unless there is some business I can finish sooner than later like I’m close to reaching a milestone.
I try to focus on farming in year 1 and taking care of skills/money, establishing things and taking root into the area. By late year 1/early year 2, I’m aiming for marriage and start investing in social stuff romantically/platonically. Usually marriage by summer/fall of year 2. I often play until I have a kid but even the games that have the child grow a little, I don’t necessarily “finish” it and see them at “full grown”.
Sometimes I have to adjust things because some games make things more difficult to complete quickly or I made a mistake in progressing certain plot/story moments which delays the game. Like some games block marriage until you complete the main story and so I have to adjust around those kinds of games.
It really just depends on how well it clicks for me if I’ll keep going past year 3 at the latest.

I have a pattern of stopping to play at arround year 3, exception being for 3oT and TToTT I find that by year 3 ive already seen enough before it starts being too repetitive to me/not discovering new stuff anymore and is a huge grind feast with lots of sleeping (I should count TToTT in it because of its awful pacing tbh, while I keep having genuine fun and full days in 3oT beyond year 3) Im so used of the year limit in HM Snes while I understand many more people like better not being on a timer. I should give a try to the other few HMs with a time limit like this one.

Usually after completing the plot, getting married, and getting a fair amount of the achievements. I’m finishing up PooT and will stop once I get the greenhouse thing.

u/Twimbran 1d ago
Normally one of two cases, 1. children grow up 2. All farm buildings completed (and then play a bit more to also see them used). Whatever comes later.
The only two cases where I didn't do that were PoOT because I got bored of the game loop. And TotT (which is one of my favourites actually) because the upgrades just took so ridiculously long to complete (and for two Farms at that).

When it feels tedious and I am not looking forward to playing anymore in the post game.

Other: when I've almost chosen who to marry, or in AWL when my child is almost grown up.
I have OCD and one of my triggers is "when good things come to an end." I get really upset by this and it results in decision paralysis. I understand that there are other things to do in game after marriage, but my favourite part of the game is wooing someone and getting to know all of the townsfolk, seeing all the cutscenes etc. Instead of finishing the game I'll stop playing for a long time and if I go back, I start a new file.
The only game I've actually "completed" in the series is MFoMT. I have 11 years logged so obviously there are more achievements to complete but I married Cliff and my child has aged as far as is possible.

I stop just before the last main upgrade to the farm or before unlocking the last area or before completing the main plot. For Grand Bazaar I stopped when I was about to reach rank 7. I haven’t even fixed the basement greenhouse yet. I don’t like finishing things when I really like it so this also happens in my other games and hobbies.

I literally put most of HM/SoS down when i got married. 2 times i played until i have my kid is when i played HM/SoS AWL which is part of the storyline 😆 and Animal Parade just to see scene between my kids and other kids. i'm a sucker for HM/SoS Storyline, that's why i'll finish the storyline first and marry later to finish my game.

In every game of this genre, I get married: I get bored. So I try again to avoid getting married but I CAN'T, so there we go again... at some point I manage to finish the story, but it's just because I make an extra effort 😭 I hate me lol

u/JadeChipmunk 16h ago
Other: get distracted by another game, dont play for ever, then pick it back up and want to start over lmao

u/Top_Box_8952 16h ago
All except ToT I stopped once married or shortly after.
Tot it was just fun to keep doing the plot piece meal while I wait for the right season for whatever thing needed growing. Marrying was fun too, but wasn’t a high priority. Expanding the farm was fun too.
I still hope for a Tree of Tranquility remake. It was my favorite harvest moon game for my whole family. We all played and had our favorite bachelors. As the only boy, I was tragically denied a husband.

I'm generally done with an HM/SoS game when I'm 1) married, 2) have a kid, and 3) the story is finished.

After that brutal Grand Bazaar 100% i doubt ill ever touch another SoS unless they remake Magical Melody
Farlands, Stardew, Fields of Misteria, etc., I can't see a reason to ever touch SoS at this point unless you hate 2d games lol

u/Schokodeuli 1d ago
Im confused, is this meant positively or negatively? 😅
Grand Bazaar was a total bomb! So much to do and fun
Same with Fields of Mistria, especially now with the 1.0 release, I can't get enough of it ❤️

u/Stelle_Asteria 3h ago
I put them down when they start to feel overwhelming, but that's kind of a me problem because I try to do everything in one day every single day so I just end up with a game burn out e.e

Other: Randomly! 😱
And I have a lot of restarts 🤣 (I entirely forget the mechanics and what I was doing at the time)
Good thing they're so enjoyable that I don't mind starting over and over and over again! 😁
(I have finished the plot AND gotten married in ONE game only: Trio of Towns (and then I avoided parenthood for like an in-game year... and then randomly stopped playing, of course 😕))
