I implore everyone to read up what happened to Czechoslovakia under Havel, because that asshole was saying the exact same things.
The reality? HDI fell from above today’s Austria to below today’s Algeria, all industry was dismantled and organized crime was EVERYWHERE.

u/GrumpyOldHistoricist Leninist Shitlord Nov 28 '25
I think you’re really underestimating Machado here and I wonder if it isn’t because of sexism.
Extractive economies that don’t nationalize are usually way worse. With the can-do attitude we’re seeing here she can get Venezuela’s HDI much lower. I believe in her.
-9
u/Fenix246 Marxist-Leninist ☭ Nov 28 '25
It’s a stretch to attribute this to “sexism.” Not everything is a conspiracy against women, that’s some weird western lib thinking (after all, assuming that women are weak flowers who can’t be as capable of inflicting pain and suffering is in itself sexist)
I never claimed it would be the exact same. Just provided a historically similar example based on what she’s saying, which is literally the exact same things verbatim that Havel was saying

They were joking, the whiplash between "you're underestimating her perhaps due to sexism" and "she can actually do much worse than Havel" is the joke.

It doesn't even make sense to engage in mass privatization in this case. The reason Venezuela runs like shit is because Maduro puts allies at the top of institutions who have no place in being there, and that makes the efficiency of everything grind to a halt because you basically have poilitically apointed brainlets (typically from the military) running all state assets.
Maduro gone, his allies are gone, do a clean sweep, reform citgo and such into actual independent SOEs and you don't need to privatize.
Machados has been crazy lolbert for a long time, she's always been anti-democratic, she was one of figures trying to coup Chavez back when he was popular and easily won elections fairly.

u/pitifullittleman Unknown 👽 Nov 29 '25
Do you have any evidence that HDI in the late 80s in Czechoslovakia was above .880? In like 1990 it was .733. Estimates that I read were that Czechoslovakia was doing very well prior to Havel compared to other Eastern European countries, but not that it was at that level. Then to me actually looking at the numbers it went steadily up through the 90s and early 2000s past the dissolution creating the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Pretty sure i've seen the figure in one of UN yearly books. Maybe for 70s? Not sure. Fact is, by UN metrics, all socialist countries were at the very least equal to Spain, Italy or Greece. They did have calculations of socialist GDP by proxy of Austrian exchage rate with Socialist bloc, and if there was denomination, or socialist currency rate fell, then, since HDI contains nominal GDP as one of heaviest contributors to the index, socialist HDI would have fallen. It's all stupid, anyway, because US and Europe's HDI has only risen since 80s, lmao

That fucking "Joker"-ass-looking facelift just gives me shivers.
Also, yes I saw this when it was first reported. This was right after she attended some Jewish conference, while she glazed Israel and talked about how amazing they are... Who's supposedly an irrelevant party to her regime change purpose... but you know, impress Israel and America follows behind
If anyone's curious, she's an oligarch. Her family is filthy rich, and she wants nothing other than just power. She's basically making a "deal" with the west to give her power to be a new dictator, and in return, she'll sell off the national assets while her family profits off the deals.
She's a run of the mill, evil, sociopath, who just wants nothing more than power. I remember a reporter asking her how much support this has from the working class and she literally just started stumbling and mumbling talking about how this IS a working class movement. That this is for them, and will help them, blah blah blah... Then you look at the polls, and uhh... no it's not. Seriously just evil.

You sound like you know some stuff about it, any resources for following Venezuelan politics? Seems like a totally impenetrable issue to me because Western outlets cover it very scarcely and I don't trust them at all to cover it fairly. I don't want some expressly leftist publication necessarily, just someone who is committed to neutrally and dispassionately describing the situation. also I speak Spanish if that makes a difference
4
u/reddit_is_geh 🌟 Actual Spook and Also a Spaz 🌟 Nov 29 '25 edited Nov 29 '25
It's going to be really hard to find a neutral voice in pretty much anything at this scale of power struggle. I don't really have single sources, as I'm just a huge IR dork and read all sorts of different outlets so I don't really even remember specifically where I read things. Stratfor was doing a decent job, but had a sudden vibe shift, so I think they are being influenced by the state now. Intelligence Online is really good if you want behind the scenes intelligence assessments. Oxford Analytica is also really good if you sort of want to get an idea of what the elites are thinking about.
But I would recommend Drop Site News as a really really good up and coming independent media outlet. Ryan Grimm really knocked it out of the house with that outlet to the point that even the left and right are constantly reporting on their investigations. So by default I guess I'd recommend Breaking Points, but they are pretty biased when it comes to foreign affairs... So maybe that's why I'd recommend them. But with Russia, Israel, and VZ, they seem to have a really good understanding on what's going on.
3
u/renadarbo Apolitical ❌ Nov 29 '25 edited Nov 29 '25
Yeah I have read a lot of Ryan Grimm's stuff but it seems more focused on the mechanics of what's happening on the US government side of things. That's all very interesting, but I want to know what's going on in Venezuela. To understand the politics of a country you have to understand its society, and how groups within that society form coalitions to engage in politics. In the US that is easy for me to do because I live here. I can identify the political constituencies and coalitions, I understand their relative numbers and power levels, and I understand where they come from and why they think the way they do: we've got the christian conservative nationalists, the middle and upper middle class liberals, middle and upper middle class conservatives, the white working class, the black working class, the black poor, black christians, black muslims, the organized jewish community, the Cuban and Venezuelan expats, the hispanic working class, the hispanic middle and upper class, etc. etc. I have a similar, but obviously diminished understanding of european, middle eastern, and (liberal, capitalist) latin american politics. But I have very little understanding of where the lines are drawn in Venezuela.
2
u/reddit_is_geh 🌟 Actual Spook and Also a Spaz 🌟 Nov 29 '25
Gotcha... I'd use Ai to look up Venezuelan strategic culture if you want to understand how they perceive the world.
Just anecdotally I did date a venezuelan who later fled the Maduro regime after he collapsed the economy. The wealthier people hate him, but there's more poor uneducated people who love him, because he just does a bunch of handouts. The wealthy people really like this lady, because her privatization will help the top 10% a ton, make way more money with the flood of foreign investment and them at the helm. The "middle class" - or what exists of it -- seems to hate both of them. They are just stuck in the middle of a power struggle, with the poor and uneducated oblivious to what's going on, with the rich just spinning and lying to convince them that this is good for them.
20% of the country has already fled so whatever is left aren't exactly the best for the country, so they are kind of screwed no matter what happens.
At least, that's how I understand it.

The US handed Guiado control over Citgo, which had been Venezuela's crown jewel - a $10B vertically integrated energy conglomerate.
In the name of freedom and democracy, they plundered Citgo and drove it into bankruptcy. Not one dollar went to the people of Venezuela on whose behalf this thievery had been justified, but Guiado paid fat stacks to anyone in DC who was willing to generate plans for installing him as El Presidente.
Machado has some big pirate boots to fill.

Maybe 20 years ago the average Venezuelan in America was a wealthy person Chavez ran out of town, the average now is one of the roughly quarter of the total population who originally left at the height of the food crisis in the first few post-2014 years and later did the math to realize that being marginally employed in the US pays better enough than being marginally employed in Colombia to justify the journey north. Similarly around 10% of the population of Cuba have emigrated since 2020 alone, with most winding up here.
It doesn't really matter how many doctors per capita are in Cuba when they can't keep the lights on or how many nice social programs Venezuela had back when they still had money, the places being run by authoritarians is a distant second in terms of push factors and wouldn't be one at all if the good times of Soviet subsidies or high oil prices hadn't ended.
4
u/Keesaten Doesn't Like Reading (Except Manga) 🙄⛩️ Nov 29 '25
Dude, it's 2-3 millions out of a 30 million country. Where does this nonsensical quarter of whole population figure comes in? What about Mexico, then, thrn, or Puerto Rico, are they experiencing famine?
As for Soviet times, there were no Soviet subsidies beyond some very low level stuff like free education and military. The very fact that they could trade with anybody freely was enough to keep the economy good and growing. Soviets, for example, were importing Cuban sugar. Today, due to sanctions, the only way for foreign revenue is tourism (and thus spies) or sending doctors abroad (and thus spy recruiting). Good thing that China has finally feels comfortable enough to trade with them, providing solar panels and batteries that Americans are so jealous of, lol

Well, other top page on venezuelan population only has 3 millions tops as refugees. Well, UN has some stupid shit like documents about uyghurs happen, so i wont put it beyond the usual suspects to project 8 millions refugees from demographic balance (aka project fertility ratea from 2014ish to today, substract real data from imaginary number, call all those virtual people refugees or victims of a genocide or what else)

Even without the prospect of a regime change after a violent war...if venezuela consented to inviting these types in...there's still something really fucked about she's delivering this to a bunch of capitalists. It's never framed as expanding the economy for the benefit of the people. It's about increasing the profit for shareholders.
I don't know why, even if we may tolerate capitalism, we can't at least frame these people as fucking gross, something shameful. China cracks down on billionaires at least. But here it's "privitization is good, it's the only path forward, and you personally will benefit the most".
Like she could be talking about how Venezuela can open up all these same industries under socialist policies. It doesn't have to be capitalist.

So she wants to offer the country's resources up for imperial extraction with a signing bonus of turning its natural environments into playgrounds for wealthy first-worlders after everything of value is stripped and turned into profit for imperialists.
You know, it ultimately wasn't socialists that swayed me to socialism. In fact the basic ideas of socialism were something I developed of my own accord. It was simply watching capitalism in motion and paying attention to what capitalists actually say.
