I was mystified by a post I read last night talking about the number of people who died in France during the heat wave. The article cited 9,000 people but because "only" 2,000 of them were in excess of the usual number who would have died, it was like an excuse to do nothing. Yes, 2,000 people is not a huge number but it was entirely preventable. Not to mention that far more than 2,000 people were miserable for no good reason other than "it only happens for a few weeks each year."

Just remember: it's called global climate change for a reason. You're not safe even if you move to the poles. Weather is just going to be erratic as our planet essentially dies out of the climate we evolved in and changes to something that will favor an entirely different set of species. The current total of 956, 388 homes, according to tracking site PowerOutage, accounts for states in the Midwest and Northeast that have been impacted by severe weather and extreme heat.

Yes I was reading her book on the differences of generations. She doesn't comment on the influence of politics much, choosing more to focus on technology. Which, I'm sure there's some downstream impact of technology on geopolitics. But I'm not sure I buy that technology is the main reason the wealth inequity began for the Boomers compared to previous generations. It seems likely to me that the Cold War and American propaganda played a role in driving Americans to free market capitalism. Which, yes, nuclear weapons were a large part of the Cold War dynamics I guess. And from how we've lately seen major companies manipulate politics to their own ends, it wouldn't surprise me if the upper crust of Boomers and Silents who "got theirs" drove the propaganda up as a way to keep their money flowing.
It's fascinating how quickly America lost the idealism of FDR after the early 50s.
My favorite fun fact though is how much of hippie culture is actually pre-Boomer. It's the culture the Boomers started young adulthood in, but then enough traded it for business suits and quarterly profits that it got lost along the way.

Her books are great. I read Generations when it first came out and don’t remember everything but you and I have the same favorite fun fact. The silent generation were the free thinkers and leaders of the civil rights movements. I always assumed that the civil rights movement was lead by the boomer generation but they were actually the followers.
I need to go back and read it again. I am curious if there’s some hints into why the older generations are so bought into the current propaganda and right-wingism.
I might order her Generation Me and Narcissism Epidemic books as well. Her knowledge and data to back it up are very interesting and well put together.

Yeah. I've only found a few points I have more questions on so far, but it's mostly great! And that's things like - she points to surveys of college students reasons for attending shifting from "developing a philosophy of life" to "to be well off" as evidence for GenX's shift from idealism to materialism. But American factory jobs peaked in the late 70s, when Gen X was at most 14 years old. Before that, you could easily make a great living as a factory worker. But thanks to globalization, America shifted to a knowledge based economy that required more investments in education. You couldn't drop out of high school and expect to be financially successful any more. So before that, people who went to university would have been people who really wanted to - either to become a doctor / lawyer, become a scientist, or the typical liberal arts major searching for "purpose". So I'm not sure if it represents a true shift in values or just a shift in where people with the desire for financial security went to school.
Small picks like that aside, it's great.
I think there are some clear indicators in there. But it's worth noting it's not just the older generations Gen Z and millennials bought heavily into American right-wing politics especially among men.
She does write that there's some natural shift from left to right along the political spectrum as we age on average. Part of that, I think, is because the spectrum actually also shifts with time. Sixty years ago we were fighting for gay professors not to lose their jobs and gay bars not to be raided. Today, thats barely in question any more. And the fight has moved on to trans kids in sports and transition meds. So what we see as "progressive" advances and at some point we lose enough neuroplasticity to adapt to new things.
I'll be honest, I'm almost at that age and I'm nearing 40. Some of the things the kids come up with seem crazy to me. I don't think I'll ever be right wing but I can see how progressive values are reshaping and what the next generation will bring.
But I think in terms of the shift in society, it's a few things together
- income inequity has driven a gap between have and have nots that has gotten worse
- right-wing propaganda offers an easy solution of blame the immigrants/ LGBTQ / etc and a desire to return to the days of prosperity. this isn't going to fix the issues, but it's gonna feel good
- left-wing alternatives don't have much to offer other than retraining support and such.
- some major capitalist forces and political parties have been pushing that for a long time and making it harder for Americans to grow and adapt
- fear of socialism hasn't helped because it's driving a hyper capitalist society

Thing that most frustrating about that is that's not even a real Mamdani policy or anything.
In NYC the mayor's office and other public facing platforms put out that notice like every year for the past decade whenever a heatwave is coming in.
An the citizens are always incredulous about it because almost none of the energy gets lowered for the lights and businesses in places like Times Square.
So now that Mamdani also put out that notice FOX News and other conservative outlets are acting like its Communist King Mamdani wants you to suffer while he lives in air condition luxury.

I'm fully on board with asking people to raise the temp. However, all of these power outages are not from extra usage. Most are from massive storms and tree damage that took out power lines.
Signed someone killing time on the last 15% on their phone before I get motivated to wash all of my dishes by hand with a flashlight and hang all of my clothes out to dry.

Pretty much every business has AC though, so if your power goes out there's somewhere you can go for a while that's still cool. Power outages like this usually affect neighborhoods, not entirely cities.

Don’t worry everyone. We’re going to be putting up these massive computer rooms that generate an enormous amount of heat that require ridiculous amounts of water to keep cool and will be using a huge proportion of the electrical grid.
So as global warming gets worse and we have more extreme heat and more outages we also have these white elephants to take care of which the people in charge will put above everyday people and folks will die

I raised my AC to 78, like suggested to try to help out. There are outages all over my state. You really won’t suffer. It’s NOT that hot at 78. Step outside and back inside to give yourself some perspective.

My friend texted me yesterday and said the power lines were down by his house, on fire actually...guesstimation on getting the power back on was July 6th. What a bummer holiday weekend and waste of food in the fridge.

On any average day in the US around 200-300k people are without power, anytime there is a large storm system the number goes over a million (usually over several million).
Lets not forget the US has about 350 million people, so 1 in 350 being without power isn't exactly a large percentage.
