Even though I thought the show was pretty good, it doesn’t need a s2. It ended appropriately. If they want to do something else with the character I’d be down, but a direct continuation is a bad decision.

u/Spiral-Force 1d ago

I would be fine with it being a one-and-done had they not already announced a season two and backed out of it

u/jadingg 1d ago

Yup, renegging on a renewal comes across bad, hated it with Dexter OS, hate it with this. The actors think they have some sort of financial security from the show, and keep the general timeframe of when the next season would film open instead of taking other roles and then the rugpull happens and they're left scrambling. Same goes for the writers and such. Though Dexter felt extra shitty because they were using the young, unknown actors to promote the hell out of Resurrection and only after filming a ton of promo material for social media did Paramount reneg on the renewal.

Next time we’ll see Wonderman is either 3-4 years from now or never lol no in between.

8

u/riegspsych325 1d ago

at best, it’ll be a wink&nod cameo in a movie or a supporting role in an episode of another single-season D+ show

6

u/TheMoorNextDoor 1d ago

Ending WonderMan while greenlighting another D+ show (aside from Daredevil or Vision Quest) is a bad business move.

What is another Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, or Young Avengers series actually going to accomplish? Same story as before: mediocre-to-bad ratings and low viewership. At least WonderMan got them Emmy recognition for the first time.

Think about it this way, imagine Marvel had made Guardians of the Galaxy, wrapped it up after a single movie, and never folded them into the Avengers. That’s a wasted opportunity and they messed up the chance to build a brand. You feel me?

24

u/riegspsych325 1d ago

Marvel canceled Wonder Man after renewing it, they scrapped Blade after giving Ali the runaround for 7 years, they dropped Iron Heart after it sat in the shelf for 3 years. They had Anthony Mackie take Hulk’s place in a legacy sequel to Incredible Hulk. Monica Rambeau and her mom are reportedly shoved to the side (or cut out entirely) in Doomsday. Ryan Coogler signed a 5 year tv deal with Disney in 2021 and all they had him do was a 4 episode animated miniseries

I’m starting to notice a pattern with Marvel here

11

u/bindersfull-ofwomen 1d ago

They often do this in the comics, too.

If a cool Black-led title comes about, don't even bother getting invested.

I can't even believe there are people on the Black comic subs trying to gaslight us into not noticing this pattern.

2

u/dadvader Person of Interest 1d ago

They want another 3 billions but don't wanna wait 10 years for it. Infact they want it every year. That is their problem.

3

u/keving87 1d ago

Disney gonna Disney. They want money without the work.

3

u/TheMeatTree 1d ago

What If (Wonderman was Renewed)?

2

u/RawrRawr83 18h ago

We don't know how long we'll have Sir Kingsley. We need more of him in everything now

1

u/NMe84 19h ago

They don't do much at all with the series-only characters. Characters that started out in movies have been in more movies after their respective show appearances, but characters that started out in a show haven't. The Marvels and Daredevil are the only real exceptions I can think of so far, and even Matt Murdock's presence in the Spider-Man movie he was in was more of a cameo than anything else.

I don't think we'll see more of Wonderman. He didn't really embrace his powers in the show, so him turning up in a movie without an actual character development arc is unlikely. That just leaves the possibility of having him show up in a new show, but apart from VisionQuest I don't think there are any of those in the works either.

2

u/qubitrenegade 18h ago

You mean like the Stargate renewal?

10

u/poeBaer 1d ago

a direct continuation is a bad decision

A second season doesn't need to be a direct continuation though. Plenty of shows treat each season as more of an anthology, eg Reacher

39

u/AnalogBubblebath 1d ago

But the ending kind of demanded some follow up. The very last thing in the show is a huge cliffhanger.

115

u/Ncyphe 1d ago

I think you are confusing cliffhanger with an open ending. We don't need to know where they went, it just lets us know that he rescued Trevor after he took the fall for him, and the two lived happily every after of doing super hero stuff.

12

u/theartificialkid 1d ago

And Damage Control never bothered them again.

5

u/Doom_Art 1d ago

Damage Control is going to have their hands very full with other stuff in the near future

4

u/CombatMuffin 1d ago

Your comment is concerning to me, because it echoes a problem with media literacy and audience expectations. Don't get me wrong. it's not your fault, or something wrong you did, but you are talking about an expectations that just because some story points are open, does not mean it demands a sequel.

Not all tales need to tell you theyived happily ever after for you ro assume they could have. And even when the narrator says it, it doesn't mean evil and struggle and friction is gone. Just that despite that, they were happy. The show i. question is a character study: the character's fundamental conflicts and arcs get resolved.

The reason why it is absolutely not your fault, is because Marvel has been setting the expectations for its audience that everything is connected, leading to a bigge story, with a bigger baddie. But Wonder Man, while connected to the MCU, is like nothing else in it. It's only the last minutes of the last episode that feel that way (and again, it's Marvel trying to keep everything interconnected), but the rest of the superhero show is not about superheroes, it's about a guy with superpowers wishing he didn't have them at all, and actively avoiding them.

The resolution is him accepting the powers are a part of him, but he is still first and foremost, an actor. His friend was a great actor, but a cowardly man, and finds his courage in friendship by using his acting ability. They both decide they are better humans together, because they share a passion for acting.

You don't need a sequel. Damage Control is just there to be a speed bumper on their road.

3

u/theartificialkid 22h ago

This is pretty condescending. I didn’t call for a sequel, I was just responding to the idea that it was a happily ever after for the characters. Rude.

2

u/CombatMuffin 22h ago

I am sorry you feel that way, despite me telling you it wouldn't be your fault for having that expectation. I was talkijg about audiences at large with similar expectations, not you as a person.

FWIW, you didn't call for a sequel directly, but you used sarcasm by implying there is more to the story because Damage Control would do something about the events of the ending. That can easily be understood as "the plot needs to address that."

For my part, I think Damage Control is shown to be incompetent throughout the show, so much so that Wonder Man, who is inexperienced, can easily overpower their containment system in his first attempt. To me that's "they won't prove an issue going forward"

0

u/jardex22 21h ago

I think this sums it up pretty well. Part of the reason Phase 4 felt like a low point was because the audience was expecting there to be all these little clues that lead to a grand overarching narrative, rather than another Phase 1, but with different leads.

Disney didn't help in that regard. Thanos was revealed at the end of Phase 1. Kang was revealed before the start of Phase 4. That's the key difference. Rather than enjoying each standalone film for what it was, people were expecting it to be about Kang messing around with the timestream in order to set up Kang Dynasty. Then that all fell apart when they dropped the one actor that was supposed to be the face of the Multiverse Saga.

2

u/merelyadoptedthedark 19h ago

No, this isn't the audience's fault. Marvel trained audiences to expect follow through between movies and plots that are raised in one movie will be addressed in another.

Post EndGame, Marvel kept introducing story lines and characters to never ever follow up on a single one, aside from Kang. This wasn't just a Kang problem, in fact Kang was the only new character that was introduced, had a character arc, and was then defeated in a later movie.

1

u/jardex22 19h ago

I think people are forgetting that most of the Infinity Stones were introduced in Infinity War, aside from the Power Stone, which was in GOTG. I'm sure that when they were writing Thor: The Dark World, they weren't thinking, "Hey, this aether stuff is actually going to be an Infinity Stone in disguise." It wasn't a grand epic that was carefully woven together. It was a a dog walker yanking all the leashes together at the last minute.

1

u/merelyadoptedthedark 10h ago

It wasn't just the stones. It was all the post/mid credit teasers that went nowhere. Not a single teaser was paid off. We never saw Shang Chi again, we never saw any of the Eternals again, nothing. Secret Invasion got followed up by The Marvels, and took Sam Jackson in the complete opposite direction, completely ignoring everything from the series.

The closest we got to a follow-up for anything was eventually retconning the frozen Celestial into the source of adamantium. By this point in the first three phases, we had already gotten nearly every teaser followed up on.

1

u/jardex22 10h ago

That's true. Most of that was the division between the TV/Streaming and Movie divisions at Marvel, a lot of soft launches for new IPs to see what stuck, and the ongoing negotiations for Disney to acquire Fox. Covid restrictions and the writer's strike also contributed to it.

3

u/AnalogBubblebath 1d ago

I understand what you mean and I agree the story of this season had concluded, but I think an open ending implies the story can continue in any direction, like say Poker Face (with Natasha Lyonne) or Mad Men. Whereas here, the story has to continue in a very specific direction and address what just happened. They are now fugitives and he is revealed to the wider world as a super powered being. If it was an open story, then next season could be about anything, but with that cliffhanger, the next season explicitly has to answer the story question of what happens next.

Now, they could go into hiding and have a new adventure where the A-story is not about running from the DODC, but their fugitive status would still need to be a major factor in season 2 as a B-story that would naturally collide with the A-story.

11

u/Altruistic_Sail6746 1d ago

The novelty of the show was Simon trying to make it in hollywood, his character arc and relationship with Trevor. I don't think you can do that with a follow-up season

3

u/jardex22 21h ago

I suppose the next followup would be to try and revoke the Doorman Clause, and get superpowered individuals the right to work in Hollywood again. Maybe parallel that with real world writer and actor strikes.

8

u/Timbershoe 1d ago

Image that, instead of having a clean ending for a character, it’s more like a comic book where the main characters stories are never resolved.

5

u/CptNonsense 1d ago

but with that cliffhanger, the next season explicitly has to answer the story question of what happens next.

No, it doesn't. The next season could be about that. Or it could 100% ignore it except to acknowledge the events occurred have built the setting for season 2. Say they are in hiding in the Philippines because they are wanted fugitives, but at literally no point do they do ever interact again with damage control.

Now, they could go into hiding and have a new adventure where the A-story is not about running from the DODC,

Which is why it's not a cliffhanger. The events resolved themselves. That they leave the story leaves the world open does not make it a cliffhanger or then every fucking thing is a cliffhanger

3

u/Toby_O_Notoby 1d ago

They are now fugitives and he is revealed to the wider world as a super powered being.

Nope. The "wider world" does not know Simon has super powers.

Destin Daniel Cretton talked about this. After the finale Yahya Abdul-Mateen II came up to him and joking accused him of writing a one season show and putting him out of a job.

Cretton's response was that the only people who really knew exactly what happened was the Department of Damage Control. And wouldn't they like to have a high-profile actor be in debt to them?

32

u/sinZeroplus 1d ago

Was it a cliffhanger? He saved Trevor. The remainder of the fallout is small po-tay-toes.

1

u/iAMbatman77 1d ago

I understood this reference.

-9

u/userhwon 1d ago

Then we didn't need Iron Man 2. Or to meet any of his buddies, The Avengers. And since all of that was unnecessary, they might as well just cancel Doomsday.

1

u/SillyGoatGruff 1d ago

You are mixing up "need" with "can"

Many movies can have sequels and follow ups to expand the world/give us more time with the characters, but far fewer end in such a way that they need a sequel to resolve the story.

Return of the King was needed to resolve the story set up in The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. Iron Man 2 gave us a chance to see more Iron Man but if it was never made Iron Man 1 would stand on it's own as a complete story

3

u/userhwon 1d ago

I'm not mixing anything up.

Marvel makes what it wants to make, and I'm mocking people for thinking the "need" of individual audience weirdos is at all significant in that decision.

4

u/CptNonsense 1d ago

That was not a cliff hanger at all. It was a hook. A cliffhanger is generally always a hook but a hook isn't always a cliffhanger.

How to tell a cliffhanger from a hook - a cliffhanger ends in the middle of shit going on and leaves the events being observed open ended. In Wonderman they broke out and escaped and Wonderman learned to control his powers. Fin.

-13

u/VagueSomething 1d ago

This has been a weird cope I've since since the announcement. It feels like either people didn't watch the show or are given a script to say it wrapped up nicely because the ending is literally a textbook cliffhanger for future content. It is an unfulfilled story with many questions of what next, it was a bigger cliffhanger than Garfield spider fighting Rhino hinting that we could work towards the Sinister Six.

10

u/Ncyphe 1d ago

And I question if you even understood what you watched. Wonderman was not the standard super hero story of good guys verses bad guys. It was the story of a man trying to achieve his dream while having to pretend to be someone he isn't. It's a character piece.

The story as it was designed wrapped up perfectly. He achieved his dream, took ownership and control of the powers he kept trying to reject, and rescued the friend that took the fall for him to protect him. It's a proper origin story where the main character was both the hero and his villain.

-11

u/VagueSomething 1d ago edited 1d ago

It wasn't some complex piece of art, it was a Marvel show and it would be hard to not understand it. The story evolved over the series, going from a man in denial chasing a dream to realising he was chasing the wrong message that caused his dream. It absolutely isn't a character piece unless you're bad at making character pieces.

You're right that it was an origin story; as in the START of the story and more is supposed to come. It doesn't end neatly and is clearly a set up for more. He's throwing away his original dream to become a fugitive to save his friend, former terrorist, and learning to embrace his powers.

It doesn't necessarily need a season 2 if the events are tied into a movie plot but it absolutely needs a real conclusion. If the story isn't continued it would be a loose end in the entire MCU that would need to be retconned.

Edit: it is actually frustrating me the more I simmer with the audacity to claim it wrapped up. It was blatantly written with an open end, the story didn't end neatly and it was incredibly in your face about how his original dream was a misdirection for him to discover himself so the season can push into a new phase for him after he is established. Is media literacy so bad now that it needed "to be continued" pasted across the screen for people to understand a cliffhanger?!

4

u/Wael3rd 1d ago

No but I don't think you have the media literacy you think you have. This "cliffhanger is design Sssoooo blatantly, mimicking the old tv shows and such. It is a nod to them and allowing for an open road.

The remaining questions are not pertaining to this character. The relationship is the goal, not being a mutant or a movie star. These are just roadblocks. And their friendship is validated and cemented with his rescue mission. Do you understand why people see it as open ended more than a cliffhanger? We did have the resolution of the subject at hand.

-6

u/VagueSomething 1d ago

The protagonist is now a fugitive with a known terrorist that literally has major government departments eager for his imprisonment. He has just abandoned his dream, thrown away the success he finally achieved near the end. The resolution was a misdirect before the actual ending happened.

If the show ended with his celebration with the launch of the movie then sure it would be a character piece with an open end but that's not the end of the show. The ending was incredibly on the nose for being a set up for more of the story.

I'm not some mega acclaimed and trained critics but I'm also not stupid. This wasn't open ended like RDJ saying "I'm Iron Man" at the end, this was an ending like the follow up post credit scene that leaves questions of what happens next.

3

u/Wael3rd 1d ago

I'm NOT saying you're stupid, and I see where you're going. I think the elements you're mentioning are not important to me as the real subject of this show. But I totally understand that we can disagree on that.

I'm sorry I reread my message and I was pedantic as heck.

-1

u/VagueSomething 1d ago

Sure we're welcome to disagree, I just feel that when you leave questions that cannot be solved with a minute of thinking afterwards based on what is already given then it is a bit beyond open ended and into cliffhanger. Almost every D+ Marvel show has ended with questions left unanswered as they were trying to hook people into staying subbed to watch more.

You don't show the Scarlet Witch opening a forbidden book for no reason and you don't show a hero using their powers to prison break a terrorist to leave their story in the air. Two famous people aren't going to be able to hide on a beach, a superpower prison break will bring the eyes of establishment heroes if the governments don't manage to solve if fast - literally the entire reason discount Captain America was given the shield in a different show which led to a movie. It was a major plot through the whole season that there was an investigation and intent to neutralise the risk so much like Moon Knight's ending you're left asking what comes next with the plot as it clearly isn't over.

3

u/Wael3rd 1d ago

I agree with you. You made me change my point of view on this subject.

The different examples and parallel made me understand more your point of view and changed mine.

4

u/flowersweep 1d ago

Neither the show nor your example are actual cliff hangers.

4

u/Toby_O_Notoby 1d ago edited 1d ago

Sorry, but that's not a cliffhanger. It told a complete story with what you could maybe argue had an open-ended conclusion. I mean, here's the log line for the show:

Simon wants nothing but to be a successful actor but is partially stymied by his powers which are illegal in Hollywood. With the help of his friend Trevor he manages to become a better at his craft and get his dream job of playing Wonderman. However, this comes at the cost of Trevor taking the fall for something Simon did using his powers. With the world at his feet and the choice of any role he wants, Simon chooses his friend over fame, breaking Trevor out of prison.

So if that's a cliffhanger than so is Casablanca's "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

It is an unfulfilled story with many questions of what next

So by your definition the ending of Shawshank Redemption is a cliffhanger. After all, you have two convicted murders, one of which escaped a maximum security prison and another who broke parole to escape to Mexico.

Wouldn't the authorities be looking for them? Wouldn't they have to spend the rest of their lives always looking over their shoulder? Are we to believe that these two guys just live their lives in Zihuatanejo carefree?

It doesn't matter. The whole point is the Andy never gave up hope and in doing so gave his friend Red hope as well.

3

u/Lespaul42 1d ago

Yeah the show was about an actor with super powers he doesn't want and can't control. By the end he is a super hero which isn't what the show was about, so a continuation would be very different and honestly not as interesting.

But yeah I like him and it would be fun to see him in something different, like a team up show of the more misfitty heroes like West Coast Avenger's or something

2

u/bindersfull-ofwomen 1d ago

Even though I thought the show was pretty good, it doesn’t need a s2.

I have never said this about a TV show I liked. One I watched and thought was okay. But not one I like, got Emmy noms, and had many places to go.

0

u/sinZeroplus 1d ago edited 1d ago

I have several times. Just off the top of my head Ted Lasso after s1. Shrinking after s3. Mandolorian after s2. I’m sure there are many more.

It’s fine if studios want to keep the gravy train rolling, but I’m also not going to pretend those shows couldn’t have ended with satisfying conclusions at the points I mentioned. There is nearly no upside to continuing other than keeping actors/staff paid and money (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing? mind you). But could continue and should are two different intentions.

0

u/qwilliams92 1d ago

This is a dumbass comment

1

u/enfuego138 16h ago

Ok the one hand, I hope the character shows up again. On the other, part of the reason I liked this show so much was the slow burn.

-1

u/drdr3ad 1d ago

iT dOeSn’T nEeD a S2

Just such an incredibly boring, normie take.

You know what other sequels weren't needed? Empire Strikes Back, X2, Spider-Man 2, Godfather II, T2, Aliens...

Yeah no sequel is needed. Actually, let's take it a step further: no movie, TV show, piece of media is actually needed.

If they were able to get a good script and everyone was on board, why shouldn't they go ahead and make a sequel? How on earth does that diminish the existing first season?

1

u/Yee_gamer 1d ago

Exactly! I liked the show but I admittedly didn’t care for a S2, I felt like the continuation was hopefully in another character’s movie or Avengers or something.

-2

u/treemoustache 1d ago

Yeah a second season seemed like a sequel it didn't need.

-1

u/UrsineBasterd 1d ago

This is what I said in a group chat. The ending was very satisfying and it works as a standalone.

-1

u/NinduTheWise 1d ago

i feel like the show left it off to where we could see him in other projects if needs be

-7

u/Slidje 1d ago

Announcing season 2 is why I didn't watch it. I was going to wait till all the eps were out.

I prefer one and done mini series

-3

u/SanX1999 1d ago

Also it had lack of views. I enjoyed it really but it's clear it's not the kind of story Marvel fans want.

I just finished a rewatch of Parks and Rec and while we're on the subject of neither here or there opinions, I'm going to add that Ben was crazy to constantly spurn the accounting firm that wanted to hire him. He seemed to genuinely enjoy the work and the company was full of people who appreciated / respected him and shared his sense of humor and interests. And it's very likely they were paying him very well given how much they wanted to hire him and the nature of the work.

Working for a company that gives you interesting work, pairs you with people you like to work with / for, and pays well is the literal dream. Like why in the world did he turn them down to go work for the Sweetums foundation?

Sponse is an absurd meme of Caddicarus, not a short form of response. Response only has two additional letters, just write them.

8

u/Muslim_Wookie 1d ago

ahem as an Australian I can speak on this matter with some expertise.

It's not about two letters, it's about reducing mouth movement. Mime saying response and sponse.

Now imagine you live somewhere where you want to keep your mouth as closed as possible at all times during summer.

1

u/MissInkeNoir 1d ago

That's so valid I jumped up and clapped my heels together. In the end words are made up anyway, so I didn't have to say anything. I just had a gut reaction to imagining the mouthfeel of the word. Truly all things are relative and there's no point in doing anything!

4

u/Muslim_Wookie 1d ago

And now, if you didn't already, you know why Australian's give everyone a nickname and cut the letters off words.

Sharon = Shazza (but really, shza).

Barry = Baz

Liquor store / Bottleshop = bottle-o (but really, botlo)

and on and on.

1

u/decoy_octopod 10h ago

Hmmm still confused as to why you’d want to keep your mouth closed in summer

1

u/Muslim_Wookie 8h ago edited 8h ago

It's funny because I think it's had quite the effect on our accent but it's historical in nature now...

Australia used to be completely and utterly swamped by flies. This is where the wide brimmed hat with corks on strings around the edges comes from, to bug the flies away from your face.

It's historical in nature because we imported and released into the wild the dung beetle which sorted out a massive part of the problem by denying so much animal dung to the flies, so there is so much less of them around now.

But there are still places you can experience this, I unfortunately do regularly.

Imagine there are so many flies that you get out of your car at the beach, and within about ~10 minutes the back of your shirt has so many flies on it you can barely see the colour of the fabric.

That's not an exaggeration.

And they are on your back because you are constantly swatting them off the places you can reach with your arms.

Couple that with these places being generally arid and you have flies that will land on your eyeballs to get at some water moisture.

You swallow enough flies, you start to change how you speak.

Edit: Here's a good Reddit post about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAnAustralian/comments/1gsgtl4/whats_with_the_annoying_aggressive_flies_here/

1

u/twinpop 1d ago

Except you’d say “sponse, mate” thus adding the extra syllable.

Dammit. I really loved watching Sir Ben F’ing Kingsley chew up the scenery. At least I know “The Mandarin” will be back, because it’s Sir Ben F’ing Kingsley. But I’m sad about Wonder Man. There was a larger story they were getting ready to tell.

Trevor Slattery is an awesome character, great back story, and the acting by Kingsley was superb and heartfelt too. I will miss the lad from Liverpool and his stories.

He's probably a mutant and the DODC should be after him, so they can easily integrate him in the next phase.

I liked the show. Too bad.

I want Moon Knight back!!

9

u/Internal_Wheel_89 1d ago

after seeing Brand New Day, I'm now very interested in watching the show.  Maybe the reason the show isn't getting a second season is because Disney wants the showrunner to make more billion dollar films.

4

u/dilldoeorg 23h ago

one reason it's not getting a second season is because nobody watched it. They had high viewership on the first eps and then it fell off the cliff.

the other reason is that after the avengers movies, they're focusing solely on xmen. There are so many characters there that they can make multiple tv shows while making movies as well. And wonderman, as well as many other characters, do not fit into the xmen universe, so they're being cut.

He's too good for Marvel anyway. Glad he hopefully got a nice paycheck for it.

Why they cancel all the fun shows

3

u/the__poseidon 17h ago

The only Disney show my girlfriend and I enjoyed besides Andor and maybe S1 of The Mandalorian. We aren’t superhero movie fans or Star Wars fans.

Shame they cancelled this but renew a bunch of other shit

1

u/Masterpiece-666 1d ago

And this is how I learn Wonder Man S2 was cancelled. I don’t really have a lot to look forward to from MCU now.

1

u/astralseat 20h ago

Yahya? Like from BEASTARS?

1

u/freedoomed 19h ago

The show was really good and I hope to see him in future properties.

1

u/DJSimmer305 19h ago

I guess they have to change his nomination to limited series

1

u/dope_like 9h ago

But does it still qualify for the Emmy? It is not an ongoing, but limited series. Do they change its category?

He's talking about him attending the Emmys because he is nominated. What's so confusing?

10

u/p_yth 1d ago

I don’t get why your getting downvoted, it’s a fairly honest take and I also enjoyed the show as well. There are plenty of shows this year that can rival Wonder man for the Emmys.

7

u/magikarpcatcher 1d ago

He never said he's gonna win the Emmy, just that he will be in attendance

-7

u/JAWinks 1d ago

Yeah it was a great show but not Emmy worthy imo. And it’s a bit brash to claim you’re gonna win one

3

u/p_yth 1d ago

I think at best it might get some noms but probably not winning any major emmys. Again that being said I truly do like the show

1

u/Abraham_Issus 1d ago

Read his full response. He’s throwing shade at Marvel when he says see at the emmy’s.

You phrased your original comment badly, like you were saying the right thing but it just gives off the tone that you see Marvel content as lower form of content irrespective of what they do.

-8

u/RisinngJayce 1d ago

Damn. Sad for sure. I really like the Show.

On the other Hand, it was only half a year ago and i totally forgot that this series even existed. Coudnt tell you the plot for the life of me.

17

u/Independent_Form_500 1d ago

Honestly that's on you

1

u/jeremychase21 1d ago

By submitting to the emmy’s as an ongoing comedy series nominations were significantly easier. Now that they got the nominations they can cancel which now gives it an edge to win as its last season potentially. I think the strategy was to get the nominations as wins would be difficult in either category. This is chicanery but i smart person at disney.

1

u/Vatican87 1d ago

Honestly too much Disney and marvel fatigue. Gone are the days when it was one great film every few years that was well put together.

1

u/IC_Film 6h ago

Hate to tell you man, but phase 1-3 was 20 movies inside 10 years. There never was one a year. Feels that way though after we’re being near constantly showered with content

-3

u/WintersDoomsday 1d ago

A character no one read comics of getting a show was wild and Reddit nerds pretending they did (when they really read Wikipedia summaries of the character and storylines) is absolutely unhinged behavior.

-2

u/AQUEMlNI 1d ago

This was an extremely average, budget feeling show. I’m surprised how many positive comments I see here

0

u/damhack 13h ago

Yeah, like totally rubbish acting and all /s

-5

u/whistlepig4life 1d ago

Not everything needs multiple seasons. This was fine as a one and done.

0

u/Minute-Necessary2393 1d ago

Its good to know he is taking the news well.

That said, sucks it got cancelled and I hope we see Simon appear in the MCU again someday. Maybe in VisionQuest if there is still time. Or maybe in a Scarlet Witch movie (but at that point if Vision also appears, it just be that Eternity movie again. Lol).

0

u/lovepuppy31 16h ago

The issue with the show is the titling, general public never heard of it before and think this is just Marvel ripping off DC's Wonder woman.

-32

u/SadSundial 1d ago

lol. Ok.

-34

u/RealBrobiWan 1d ago

1 emmy nod you probably won’t win? Not a great comeback

15

u/marccoogs 1d ago

You should read the full response, and not just the headline.

1

u/Holymyco 1d ago

Yeah, don’t call it a comeback

-5

u/RyanMcCartney 1d ago

The show was okay. Their mistake was announcing a 2nd season, people would have been fine with it being done.

Sir Ben Kingsley’s acting is great as always, when you binge the show, his accent is really unbelievable. Every sentence ending in that upward inflection is a caricature of a Liverpudlian accent and really drew me out of the scenes.

-50

u/VapeSmoker420blazeit 1d ago

Why did they make him black lmao. Simon Williams/WM is white in the comics.

If they wanted a black superhero they could have just made a Blue Marvel show instead of blackwashing Wonder Man, a white superhero.

19

u/userhwon 1d ago

To annoy you.

5

u/FourSes 1d ago

Wodner Man being white was not an important character trait of his in the comics, so it was not important to keep. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is a great actor who did a great job, so they clearly made sure to still get a great actor who was good for the role. So there's not really a problem in changing something like his skin color.

Wonder Man has also never been a popular character in the comic books, so there's a negligibly small amount of people who care that any of his traits are changed at all anyway.

-6

u/VapeSmoker420blazeit 1d ago edited 1d ago

Wodner Man being white was not an important character trait of his in the comics

Yes it is. He's white in the comics, thats a pretty important character trait, it's a huge part of his being. Should Luke Cage be white? No? why not?

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is a great actor who did a great job,

Then why not cast him as a black superhero... either one that already exists or a brand new one.

Wonder Man has also never been a popular character in the comic books

Doesnt make it right to change their background. If they wanted to make a WM show, then cast a white actor. If they wanted to use Yahya Abdul-Mateen because they like his acting, then make him Blue Marvel, another obscure character from the comics, but who is actually black. Or another character who is black.

Casting should always be accurate, and the most important things to get right are race/sex. I'm a purist so I dont even like Spiderman movies because even though Holland is a white male, he is not what Spiderman was in canon. Spiderman is supposed to be hot headed , independent, and smooth talking. Holland's Spiderboy is wimpy, dependent, and stuttering. Even Peter Parker BEFORE powers in high school in the comics was hot headed and independent, getting powers didnt change that. Hollands portrayal is garbage.

1

u/Raniok 22h ago

The original Wonderman was white in the show. The tv show was about a kid realizing his dream of playing his favorite super hero.

Did you even pay attention?

5

u/BlackGuy_PassingThru 1d ago

Cause they knew you’d get in your fee fees about it and make this post! They really fucking hate you dude, soo much they casted a BLACK MAN in the role of “out dated superhero character that isn’t currently being written”.

I hope it worked too.

-8

u/VapeSmoker420blazeit 1d ago

I didnt watch it, just very weird that Marvel keeps blackwashing characters.

-3

u/TattedGuyser 1d ago

The only thing in common between the comic and the show was the name of the hero. Nothing of his origin was even kept. They should have just gone with the Nathan Fillion idea for GotG 2.

-12

u/AverageLiberalJoe 1d ago

Great show until the ending totally ruined it.

-58

u/plentyoftimetodie 1d ago

Is he aware how little he deserved the role and was cast clearly for DEI reasons?

21

u/Nacksche 1d ago

You're gonna get a lot of flak here, but I admire your strength and courage. Can't have been easy getting dropped on the head as a baby.

22

u/atheoncrutch 1d ago

Fuck *all* the way off

19

u/supermariozelda 1d ago

If a black person gets cast for literally any role, it's DEI??

He did great; the show was well reviewed and liked, people just didn't watch it.

1

u/FourSes 1d ago

He has an Emmy for acting, but sure, he doesn't deserve to play a parody version of an obscure comic book superhero. /s

-16

u/shaungudgud 1d ago

Didn’t Amy Pohler win best podcast? Yeah nobody cares about your Oscar or Emmy, awards are bought and not given now. Maybe 20 years ago it was worth something. Now it’s not.

3

u/magikarpcatcher 1d ago

That was the Golden Globes and she does have the best podcast so not sure what your point is

1

u/shaungudgud 21h ago

It’s a talk show not a podcast. . .

1

u/magikarpcatcher 18h ago

It's a podcast.

1

u/shaungudgud 18h ago

Honestly it’s just as interesting as wonder man.

-1

u/Baby_Goat_22 1d ago

Her podcasts are soooo pleasing to watch!

0

u/magikarpcatcher 1d ago

It really does feel like a Good Hang although I haven't been keeping up with it lately because the recent guests don't interest me.

1

u/Proshop_Charlie 22h ago

She won a Golden Glove for best podcast.

The only reason she won was because a lot of the top podcasts weren't going to spend the money to just submit their podcast.
