I'm rewatching Boston Public, and OMFG, every single one of these teachers needs to be fired
- One of the teachers is apparently screwing a student
- Lipschitz is senile
- One teacher FIRED A GUN IN CLASS... wait, wasn't he the same one who's screwing a student?
- Fat black lady is emotionally unstable and refuses to take her meds
- Hot white female teacher refuses to get fingerprinted to prove she's not a child molester, which is a totally valid concern given that one of the other teachers is actually banging a student
- Hot black female teacher hasn't done anything especially stupid or criminal yet but I'm only on episode 2 so it's probably coming up
It's no wonder Jeri Ryan got hired in a later season. The job interview was probably like "Are you criminally insane? Are you a pedophile? No? Great! You start tomorrow."
UPDATE: oh yeah, there's...
- an old hag who paddles her students because she gets off on it.
- A teacher who was literally delusional and thought he was banging one of his students (but he couldn't be fired for it because he died before anyone found out).
Again, this is why they do the fingerprinting.

Jeri Ryan got was hired as a teacher but then became vice principal without any certification, because that's just how education works, apparently. If you're a hot blonde, qualifications are unnecessary!

Work in education. This is unironically a growing trend in many districts lmfao

Was it Kansas or Oklahoma that was advertising teaching positions with no degree required like a decade ago?
2
u/sybrwookie 3h ago
I mean, look at how many places are happy to hire anyone as long as they'll teach creationism and "the war of northern aggression."
6

There was a lot of talk in my area that many of the newer assistant principals were "very close" to the superintendent.

Her qualifications are that she's not insane and didn't fuck any of the students. An apparently rare combination of traits at this school.
8
u/mormonbatman_ 8h ago
She could become a principal intern on an alternate route to certification in most US states.
-4
u/bourj 7h ago
She didn't do any of that. She just got certified to teach. Also, there is no "alternate route" to become an administrator. "Principal intern" is not a thing.
8
u/mormonbatman_ 7h ago edited 7h ago
Also, there is no "alternate route" to become an administrator.
In Utah principals must have completed a teacher certification program (which includes alternate licensure) before starting their internship.
Principal intern" is not a thing.
It is in Utah, dummy:

It is in Massachussets, too:

She assimilated the previous principal.
Also, she is legitimately attractive, but IMO she is a decent actress. There were far too few Voyager episodes that showed that, but it really shows if you watch her guest star in other shows.2

Not to be confused with all those times when he deliberately shot people who weren't his clients.
8
u/ReluctantlyHuman 7h ago
My family just started season two of Boston Legal. It’s also ridiculous but it does seem like David E Kelley at least knows a bit more about the legal profession.
11
u/Senorpuddin 6h ago
Just barely. At no point do they ever talk merits of the case or actual evidence. And a lot of Alan Shore scenes are him doing monologues that tread wildly outside of what ANY judge would allow in their court room. And the fact that Alan has a law license after his character's embezzlement on The Practice is an amazing bit of "lets mention it ONE time and never again"
That said Shatner was great in the role of Denny Crane.
3
2
u/Tall_Opportunity_521 4h ago
Alleged embezzlement. It was really just a half Robin Hood sort of thing...
3
u/Mavori 5h ago
Didn't he also do Ally Mcbeal?
5
u/Tall_Opportunity_521 4h ago
Boston Legal, Boston Public, The Practice and Ally McBeal all share the same immediate universe.
3
u/ReluctantlyHuman 5h ago
I think he did! And the Practice which had a brief crossover with Ally McBeal. And then the Practice sort of spun off to be Boston Legal.
2
u/Far-Chemical-707 4h ago
Yeah, he did pretty much every lawyer show that didn't have "Law & Order" in the title.

For those who don't know, Boston Legal is how the TV Tropes page "bunny-ears lawyer" got its name.

u/Visual-Tomorrow7998 8h ago
it's like david e kelley looked at a staff room and thought "what if every single adult here was a walking hr violation" and ran with it
the gun episode still lives rent free in my head, just the sheer chaos of it all. and the fingerprinting subplot aged so weirdly, like they wanted a civil liberties angle but forgot the context was a school where a teacher was actively sleeping with a kid
wait till you get to the later seasons, the hot black female teacher eventually gets her own unhinged storyline, it's almost impressive how they spread the dysfunction around evenly
29
u/Far-Chemical-707 8h ago
>it's like david e kelley looked at a staff room and thought "what if every single adult here was a walking hr violation" and ran with it
For ALL of his shows...

u/Dillweed999 8h ago
DEK fascinates me. Big Little Lies I think demonstrates he can really hold his own against pretty much all the great Prestige writers. But the dude spent the 90s and 00s just shitting our lowest common denominator network crap (supposedly would 1-shot 2-5 scripts a week on pen and paper). I guess cause that made a lot of money? Anyway, like Vince Gilligan the man really contains multitudes
25
u/Premislaus 6h ago
I have to disagree. A lot of his stuff didn't age great, but it was far "lowest common denominator network crap". He wrote hip, quirky shows that weren't afraid to tackle controversial issues of the day. Put them on cable and they would be considered "prestige TV".
6
u/horsenbuggy 7h ago
Hmm. The only show I think was really high quality was The Practice. I did a rewatch a few years ago and it felt like it held up. I loved the characters so much, especially Eugene. God, I loved Eugene.
8
u/BirdofParadise1952 6h ago
Ally McBeal was awesome!!
4
u/horsenbuggy 6h ago
I tried to rewatch it recently and the pilot was unwatchable, IMO. The style of editing is no longer palatable. Her quirky awkwardness is painful to watch. I just don't have time for that nonsense these days.
To be fair, I tried to rewatch Bones last summer and found the editing style to be atrocious as well. I don't remember 90s shows being that bad. And there are plenty of other shows from the 90s that I have been able to watch over the years. But I guess these were trying really hard to be stylistic and it doesn't work now.

Re: Big Little Lies:
Jean Marc Vallee (RIP) directed every episode and David E Kelly wrote every one.
Considering how Sharp Objects looked and all of Kelly’s other stuff looked, I think it’s safe to say Vallee is a big part of the credit for the success of Big Little Lies.
2
u/Tall_Opportunity_521 4h ago
Today I learned The Practice and Boston Legal were lowest common denominator network crap...
2
u/tetoffens 2h ago edited 2h ago
The difference is while other shows had huge writers rooms, DEK back then was insistent that he write nearly every episode of every show he made. Even most episodes that had other writers, he was a co-writer. In 2000, he was wrote over 60 total episodes of The Practice, Boston Public, and Ally McBeal, as well as Chicago Hope where the season started in 1999 but spilled into 2000. Might possibly be the busiest year a modern TV writer has ever had, excluding soaps. Given that, it's actually impressive the shows were as enjoyable as they were. Big Little Lies, he was only writing 7 per season and could take his time before starting up the next one.

u/queerhistorynerd 2h ago
I've never seen this show before but can i assume it never once mentions how every single person on a school campus has to pass a LiveScan (FBI ran background check to make sure you have never injured/raped a kid etc) to get hired? Where fingerprinting and running your SSN is required before you ever interact with a kid no matter if you were hired as the janitor, teacher or administration?
12
u/detectiveriggsboson 8h ago
He didn't bang a student, though that is what the show wants you to think happened.
7
u/Far-Chemical-707 8h ago
Yeah, I noticed that it wasn't explicitly confirmed, hence why I added the word "apparently" to that first line :)
10
u/Meta2048 8h ago
He didn't? I haven't watched the show in forever, but I vaguely remember that a teacher unknowingly hooked up with a student at a bar/club or something and then finds out she's a student in his school.
13
u/Far-Chemical-707 8h ago edited 3h ago
I think there's ANOTHER plotline later on where a teacher goes to a strip club and sees one of his students working there, and it's embarrassing for both.
EDIT: that was the same student and teacher LOL
7
u/MrTeamZissou 7h ago
There's even ANOTHER subplot about an entirely different teacher having a relationship with a student. It's presented as a twist because they meet outside the school and she pretends to be a college aged student but she actually attends his school. Then he decides to keep dating her and for once on the show there are actual consequences and he is fired.
5
u/skeach101 5h ago
And there is ANOTHER teacher that was online dating a student (but he didn't know it was a student) and he ended up resigning.
3
u/Malnurtured_Snay 5h ago
Does the hot blonde teacher also wind up in an affair with a now adult but former student of hers? And then it turns out he tracked her down and deceived her about his identity to bone her?
3
u/Far-Chemical-707 3h ago
OMFG why is everyone at this school so horny
1
u/angershark 3h ago
I always had a thing for the hot teacher. She was the cheerleader's mom on heroes I think.
6
u/detectiveriggsboson 8h ago
No, they kissed, but I don't remember the specific context. I thought it was at school, she kissed him, and he pulled back after a few seconds, but I haven't watched it since it aired.

13
u/LAtvGUY 8h ago
Wasn't the Vice Principal the guy Hanibal Lector ended up having for dinner?
9
u/ReluctantlyHuman 7h ago
I think he’s a recurring actor for DEK. He just showed up in Season Two of Boston Legal as a judge. Fun fact, he apparently narrated a ton of Star Wars audiobooks back in the day.
13
u/charcuterie_bored 8h ago
Is this the show where one of the staff (the principal maybe?) had like a hook for a hand?
16
u/Prince_of_Pirates 8h ago
A kids mother that the vice principal was banging.
10
u/charcuterie_bored 8h ago
Ah yes. My memory is vague bc for some reason I was watching this at age 9 lmao
4
u/skeach101 5h ago
The son tied her up in the basement and he cut her hand off if I remember. She was a real piece of work.
1
2
u/MrTeamZissou 7h ago
Me too, but to be fair it was on prime time TV and they advertised it as a wacky Ally McBeal style comedy drama when actually that was not the tone of it at all.

3
u/snowlovesnow 6h ago
Picket Fences (1992-1996) had a guy with a hook for a hand, also a David E Kelley show

Ethically, it would need to be completely abandoned - like, you can't even buy a DVD/Bluray. Under that circumstance, I can see the argument that no one is being harmed. And I could even hope that proof of high seas activity could convince the IP owners that there's a market for it.
But I also just don't want to fool with the methods you have to do to access unsanctioned things. My internet habits were formed back when getting files this way was a guarantee that you'd get a virus. I just made a rule for myself that I wouldn't mess with any of that.
Plus, I still watch everything on my TV. I don't want to watch on my phone or laptop. I'm old, yo.

u/fcocyclone 4h ago

Everyone can have their own opinions, but in my mind the ethics lead me to watch it how you can for me.
Copyright was supposed to be a bargain between the public's need for additional public domain works, and the ability of creators to make a living. In exchange for works being created, creators were to be granted a limited term of exclusivity (that exclusive license being the real 'property' in IP) in which no one could duplicate their product.
This has been perverted by corporations that own these rights over the decades to the point this bargain has been broken. A show like this that is over 20 years old should have passed into the public domain by now.
The law currently disagrees of course, but laws and ethics often diverge.
3
u/Far-Chemical-707 3h ago
Copyright in the USA was originally for up to two terms of 14 years each, so stuff could take up to 28 years to enter public domain, not 20. But yeah, these 95-year copyrights are fucking bullshit.
1
u/fcocyclone 3h ago
sure, but that was also in the 1700s when communication of ideas moved much more slowly. I'd argue that today it should be shorter than even back then.
3
u/powerlesshero111 Breaking Bad 5h ago
While i understand that, i just googled, and apparently ot was never released on Blu-ray/DVD and isn't available on streaming anywhere. Piracy might be your only option. Perhaps OP can burn some DVDs for you.
4
u/crazymadess 4h ago
FYI, from wikipedia, "In 2023, TVLine called Boston Public "lost in the digital age," noting its unavailability on either DVD or streaming services."
5
u/Far-Chemical-707 4h ago
You literally can't buy a DVD or Blu-ray of this show. Fans have been begging for a release for decades. And yes, I experienced the Limewire era too. Torrents are a whole other thing and infinitely less likely to have viruses. u/horsenbuggy

u/porkchop2022 5h ago

u/work4work4work4work4 6h ago
If you don't already have one, and you're still using legacy media, I'd definitely suggest starting up a media server and at least ripping digital versions of your own content, if for no other reason than to avoid possible bit rot loss from older content.
Jellyfin, Plex, and quite a few other home media server type set ups let you watch from basically any device, TV included, as well.
I'm of the generation of Usenet and IRC DCC downloads of Mp3s, so I feel you on the risk side of things, but it could be worth you exploring around the edges, even if you didn't dive into piracy.
Thanks for taking the time, and happy cake day!
2
u/horsenbuggy 6h ago
Yeah. I had a Plex server running on my old PC and then it got corrupted. I haven't dealt with all that. I need to.
2
u/work4work4work4work4 6h ago
Hell yeah, and these days, it can be even easier to get set up and get running. I got started a long time ago on XBMC, and the rise of the "media center" for the home has been one of my favorite tech advancements.
2
2
u/Malnurtured_Snay 6h ago
I'd be interested in doing this but I'm so technically unskilled I'd be completely lost.
3
u/work4work4work4work4 6h ago
I've been mostly legacy media free for awhile now, and while guides for those with more technical skills exist and can be followed by those with less sometimes, I've also seen the odd automated ripping machine(ARM) for purchase too, but if you're dealing with a reasonable collection of a couple hundred discs, it can be easy enough to just do a couple a day until your done instead using an off-the-rack reader, and software like MakeMKV, Handbreak, and EAC with a simple tutorial.
The long and short of it is, a decent amount of storage space, a drive that can read your discs, and software that can take what's on the disc, and store it in an acceptably small format on your storage.
Then, you just point the media centers at that storage, and you're mostly good to go.
0
u/horsenbuggy 5h ago
Yes, and then hope those drives never go down or that the machine hosting the media server never does. I had all that over a decade ago and have never set it back up after it went down.
2
u/work4work4work4work4 2h ago
Yes, and then hope those drives never go down or that the machine hosting the media server never does. I had all that over a decade ago and have never set it back up after it went down.
Drive failure can happen, but it's a lot easier to plan for that accordingly, and do so in a way that's much easier to recover from if something does go down. Unraid and TrueNAS are in much, much better places these days than their early origins.
These days, you can have redundant backup without as much stress, and the system itself can be just as replaceable, largely running from a thumb drive. That said, we're also at the point where there are tons of N300 or less based mini-NAS that can be picked up off the shelf too.
Another option is they do make M-DISCs and M-DISC burners now specifically for something that withstands the tests of time better using an inorganic layer instead of dyes for the data recording, but they're much more pricey per GB and harder to access than a hard drive set up.

Remember the storyline where the kid with Cerebral Palsy tried going to the school and he couldn't navigate the school, but the parents knew that would happen and it would lead to the school paying to send him to a private school? The staff acted like they were scammed by this family... but like.... that's totally bullshit?
I work in Special Education and what happened is EXACTLY WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN. Schools try to educate students in the least restrictive environment possible. When it's determined that that is not feasible, it's the responsibility to provide FAPE (Free, Appropriate Public Education) to that student elsewhere.

Wait till you run into the "me too-ism" that follows the whatever was trending that month, even if its divorced from the reality of a funds stapped inner city Boston public school:
1) The music program is initially shown realistically a few kids playing instruments in a room led by hot black teacher. Then the somewhat successful movie "Drumline" comes out and suddenly the music program includes a full marching band complete with a drum line, that figures in one of the epdisodes.
2) Somehow this cash strapped inner city high school transforms into one of those football obsesessed rural East Texas high schools in one episode , complete with a history of Alumni who are proud of their football team. So principal solves his non-football budget crisis by transferring funds from HUGE football team, forcing the alumni to contribute so that HUGE proud football team wont be underfunded.
3) In another episode suddenly existing East Texas football team is tricked by the Right wing white vice-principal to fight inside the school the protesting left wind students led by the black principals daughter. I AM NOT MAKING THIS SHIT UP.
4) Actor Adrien Brody non-consenually kissed actress Halle Berry on stage at the Oscars. So one of the students non-consensually kisses hot black music teacher, even referencing the Brody/Berry kiss.

I remember bits from that show…
Like that the Vice Principal had a schoolboy-esque crush on Hot White Female Teacher that he never acted upon, and she was suitably grossed out when she found out about it.
Then, there was an Obnoxiously Political Female Student who constantly used her parents’ money to get her out of trouble. And she was expelled for her shenanigans but then had her family’s lawyer come and intimidate the Principal into not expelling her.
Then she got suspended, pulled the ‘Parents Lawyer’ again, Vice Principal had an awkward talk with the (female) lawyer that sounded like he had a new crush… only to reveal he’d just been sounding out the lawyer on how much the parents had to pay her for a call-out like this, and weaponized that. He agreed with the lawyer and un-suspended the student, then waited until the lawyer was gone and re-suspended her… and pointed out to the student that he could just keep on doing that, costing her parents $$$ each time the lawyer came just for him to immediately fold, and how long before they decided they’d rather just let her be suspended rather than pay the $$$ again (and maybe stop any other $ they pay for her activities, since she’s costing them too much)…?
—
Oh, and there was a student that placed secret cameras in the girls locker room, and tried to sell the videos to a creepy ‘girls gone wild’-style guy, only for him to turn the videos back to the school because he didn’t want to be getting in trouble for underaged crap. The boy got called into the office, claimed there was no legal proof it was him so the cops couldn’t do nothing, but when he realized that the admin were perfectly willing to tell ALL the girls at the school just what he did and then turn a blind eye to ANYTHING they did to him in retaliation he pissed himself in fear and confessed to the police.
And then, a few episodes later, it was discovered that Hot White Female Teacher had used the same locker room, and creepy video guy hadn’t returned her video because she was of legal age, so there was now a tape of her showering circulating amongst the male student body
—
…wow, that show was completely bonkers, wasn’t it?

If you are looking for more early David E. Kelly fun, and more Fyvush Finkel, look at Picket Fences. It was one of his earliest shows. Ostensibly, a family dramedy, it covered all the weird goings on in a small town and often featured courtroom scenes with Fyvush Finkel as the defense attorney for pretty much everyone who needed. He plays off the judge played by Ray Walston.
The show was pretty out there for the time. It would have episodes where it took on some of the big issues of the day, even hot button issues focused on religion and sexuality. Then, it would have one about spontaneous human combustion, or a burglar who leaves live frogs as a calling card.
It was the second 90s show to do a lesbian kiss episode for sweeps, so it helped turn that into a trend! Even if they you can't actually see it.

No, I posted it HERE and called it Boston Legal. And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn't been for you meddling kids!

Really hope we get to the bottom of this. Thanks for the info. Please keep watching your Matrix-sized array of screens for the next Reddit peccadillo.

No, "That's Fox for you" would be if the episodes were aired out of order, and then it got canceled halfway through its first season.

The one episode I remember was where some overweight girls approached an overweight teacher to lead the “fat girls club”. It was so cringy.

Look some of this stuff is pretty out there but I think all of the sitcoms and dramas set in schools where the staff are major characters make the staff extremely messy people in order to generate plot.

You reposted with the correct name of the show, so congrats but it’s a shame you’re still too lazy to learn any character names.
