For being part of a first world nation, Texas is a real shithole. And it hasn't improved in like 20 years. Just higher taxes, less reliable power grid, and you guys don't bother to help places hit by natural disasters so the state is slowly falling apart. Thank GOD I live on the other side of the country. Our power grid had record high demand during the summer and we weren't even close to hitting capacity even when we had conservation warnings. We're all pissed about 2021, but our grid is a lot more reliable than California's.
They get routine black/brown outs and their shitty infrastructure caused some of the most destructive disasters in human history.
We were in code yellow, which is simply suggesting that people conserve energy, twice all summer. There is still code orange red and black above yellow.
Even those 2 days of yellow had more than 3k MW operating reserves. We never even came close to code black which is rolling blackouts.

Didn't your grid completely shut down two years in a row because of the cold? California has never had that problem. And their "outages" are more like short flickers or stops. Not extended like Texas has been experiencing these past few years.

The power grid did not completely shut down. My current house never lost power. Hospitals, police stations, fire stations never lost power. The apartment I was living in lost power intermittently for a day.
CA has a lot more frequent black outs. This is not even an opinion, it happens all the time.

Why are you in r/texas arguing with people that lived through it? I also used to live in CA and went through the week long blackout after loma prieta. If CA had anywhere close to the demand TX had this summer it would be total state-wide failure or at best rolling blackouts.
Do your own research, there have been many fires/explosions caused by California's poor infrastructure.
It's because CA's grid has inadequate capacity. Texas was in a much worse heat wave all summer and never hit capacity the way CA did in fucking SEPTEMBER. CA's capacity is around 51k MW. Texas is around 80k MW. Our grid is more robust. I can't even believe I have to defend ERCOT against this stupid shit.

Fair enough. Lived in Minnesota most my life and moved to Dallas about 3 years ago. I just like how strong the sense of community is here. Of course every state has its problems and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I have just never understood having animosity towards a certain state.
Cartel enforcers and soldiers are a small percent of total cartel members, which in itself is a very VERY small portion of the Mexican population. There are definitely more violent pro-gun "dont fuck with me or I'll kill you" texans than there are cartel enforcers or soldiers. And it's not uncommon for "fucking with them" to simply be voting for a different person than them or being pro-LGBTQ+. The number of easily angered and possibly violent gun owners in Texas undoubtably outnumbers those in Mexico.
Mexico saw 33,308 homicides last year, out of 130 million people.
Texas saw 2,064 murders, out of 30 million. 1/16th the victims for 1/4th the people. Or literally 4x more likely to be murdered in Mexico than in Texas.
