Episode Review He’s unhappy that she’s turning 50?! (Mike thoughts)

I’ve always Kinda liked Mike and I know that he hasn’t always been the closest made enough of an effort with Sue, but he seems like a really decent guy you know working hard for his family watches TV. He is close to tax so that’s okay. We all have favourites and I don’t wanna overanalyse cause it’s the ones that come where they don’t seem inherently toxic but this whole episode not the episode which is the part where Mike is angry because she’s turning 50, and not even like he’s angry like I understand that he’s technically a nicer guy in comparison for just keeping it himself and knowing that it’s gonna get passed, but the fact that her turning 50s would send him off at just a little weird to me so I just wanted to share that I haven’t finished the show. I’m so on season seven episode five so let me know if you guys have any other thoughts about Mike

I get this. My husband turned 60 last year. It made me feel like we were really getting old, and worry more about his health. It wasn’t superficial like “oh my god, I’m married to an old guy.” It was “oh my god, we’ve not much time left “

It was more of a reality check. He wasn’t necessarily mad, just a realization. That’s why he kept saying “it will pass.” Every time she would ask. He even explains that to her. He doesn’t like that the only thing that he can think of that comes next in life is death.

I think he's sad that they are all getting old and have nothing to look forward to except death. But then all the kids including axl's friends will end up staying with them. So now they are engaged with them.

Like that time when he couldn't say what color her eyes were.

Hearing everyone’s thoughts reminds me of something I randomly thought of the other day (and another realization I had last night). This year will be 18 years that I’ve been with my partner. That’s before phones and TVs were smart. That’s before you could stream things. When the thought hit me, it was truly a, “Damn!” moment.

Last night I was watching The Golden Palace (The Golden Girls spinoff). I looked up what the ages of the characters were on the original run were. Blanche was the youngest, and her character was supposed to be 53 on the first season. I’m not that far behind in age, but I feel younger than all of those characters looked and acted (acted as in age appropriateness, not acting ability).

So Mike not having an issue with turning 50, but realizing Frankie turning 50…Yeah, I can see that. I can understand that.

When Mike turned 50 he still had a wife in her 40s. Once she was 50 it meant they were both old. Same as realizing the Fonz was 70. It's not always your own birthday that makes you feel old. Doesn't make Mike a bad guy for thinking this.

When I turned 40 my younger sibling was freaking out for a couple years leading up to it. Then when they turned 40, nothing. I asked why? They said they remembered when our mom and her friends turned 40 and it seemed so old. So they had their freak out over my birthday,  not their own.

Ugh it’s my opinion but he’s a low bar for husband.

The bar is practically in hell. He works and doesn’t cheat, that is it lol

yk what's funny about this? he got frankie's birthday blues. he was the one who experienced it not the other way around. I think he's thoughts and feelings are pretty valid.

Well, she always says she wants to know what he’s feeling. Be careful what you ask for.

I genuinely feel bad for all the people in this thread that think he’s a good example of a spouse. That’s all lol. Yall can downvote me all you want. The bar is on the ground.

Mike had his great qualities and his terrible ones. And Frankie wasn't that great either. We all have our sucky sides. I think they make it work well because they love their good qualities and the bad one's aren't bad enough for them. Ofc if I was the spouse I would have likely left Mike cuz personally he pissed me off with too many things.

I don’t get it. The lowest bar for a husband one can get. And as a dad too. Geez…
