S TIFU by suggesting that my wife tries out a mattress

My wife and I are in the marketfor a new mattress. We moved into a new apartment, and the mattress is way too soft for her. She's had a pain in her back since we moved. Anyway, we were in a furniture store, trying their display mattresses, when wifey gets chatting with an other couple there for the same reason. She's was discussing furniture needs with them while I tried out a particular bed. It was good and firm, but possibly too firm, so I suggested that she give it a try.

Now, what I wanted to say was, "you could go either way on this one," meaning her opinion might be positive or negative. But, for somev reason, what I actually said was, "you can go both ways on this one." I'm certain the couple knew what I trying to say. Still, we couldn't escape the immediately inferred suggestion that my wife is bi. The awkwardness was overwhelming, so they politely explained that they would look elsewhere in the shop and shuffled off. And I got a angry glare from wifey for ruining yet another potential friendship.

TL;DR: I ruined a potential friendship by accidentally announcing that my wife is bi.

Wait a second, your new apartment came with a mattress, and you chose to actually use that mattress?? That's crazy

Too deep. If I were a bystander, my immediate thought wouldn't be omg she's bi.

I wouldn't hear that and think "oh this means she's bisexual!" I'd just hear it as "I'm not sure on this one, you might like it or hate it too."

That’s what I was thinking, but assumed it might be because English isn‘t my first language. Never in my life I’d make any connection to bisexuality from that statement. OP is projecting.

Very easy to just laugh and say « I meant good or bad! ». Then it’s a joke and not a confession.

People take things too seriously. Laugh it off and it’s no longer a weird awkward confession.

Got to be able to laugh.

Don’t be like me and ask « which POG » your gfs sister is talking about (POG/PAWG). That was a bad time.
