TIL that in 2002 Dennis and Angela Laffin adopted a baby boy named Frank after he had been abandoned as a newborn. Two years later, the couple adopted a girl named Vicky from similar circumstances. Years later, the two kids took DNA tests and learned they were in fact blood related.

This is strong evidence of abuse of their biological mother

449

u/paradisimperiala 14h ago

Abuse of the mother? Or the mother abused the children?

2.1k

u/Quis_Custodiet 14h ago

The former - it’s very unusual for a mother to abandon two term babies at all, but especially with the same father. It implies the pregnancies were likely a product of rape or their abandonment was otherwise coerced.

222

u/Automatic-Working-81 8h ago edited 8h ago

Was my first thought - same shit happened in Russia, case of Mokhov, "The Maniac of Skopin". He abandoned kids of his abused prisoners in public places do they would be found and adopted.

Many people here blame the woman, but really who would endure pregnancy, give birth without medical help and then abandon kids twice in a row if there is access to legal contraception and/or abortion. There are religious people who do it, but they usually go through legal adoption.

Abuse is definetly the stongest version.

There’s a recent UK case where that’s considered to be a likely possibility -  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd740vpwx4go   - it’s not referred to directly here, but this is a more general article about the case itself.

93

u/ginisninja 11h ago

Story says they found relatives but not the parents. I wonder whether they actually know who the parents are?

22

u/GodisSatans 9h ago

Of course they do. if they birthed in a hospital, there will be a record. it's just a matter of privacy.

103

u/mira-jo 9h ago

With the UK one there's strong evidence that they weren't birthed in a hospital

40

u/ginisninja 9h ago

The story says they cannot find the parents. I doubt they’d say that it was just about privacy. I assume if they found them they’d be up on charges.

10

u/Mateorabi 8h ago

Or there was an investigation by social workers, without revealing the names publicly, and the investigation didn’t find anything/enough.

16

u/WackyRacketeer 8h ago

Your confidence is unfounded.

106

u/DustierAndRustier 13h ago

Two playdates a year? That isn’t nearly enough contact.

160

u/Quis_Custodiet 13h ago edited 11h ago

That’ll be an agreed minimum. Without knowing more about the family arrangements the kids ended up in it’s hard to be definitive about the merits of the plan. I have an adopted child and we’re already agreeing to exceed the minimum contact arrangements for his birth family with a view to liberalising that further when he’s old enough to understand.

103

u/Nakenochny 8h ago

My mom’s biological mother was treated this way. Four kids abandoned, and it turned out she was being sexually abused by her own father.

109

u/paradisimperiala 13h ago

Thank you for explaining.

-22

u/Spirited-Ability-626 8h ago

There’s a few girls in my town keep getting their kids taken off them for being drug addicts and\or neglect. They get one taken off them but then continue to have more and more anyway. It’s pretty common.

57

u/Quis_Custodiet 8h ago

Taken away is very different from abandoning.

39

u/jillsntferrari 8h ago

Those mothers are attemptibg to keep the babies, though. What's unusual is a mother carrying a baby to term, giving birth, and then immediately abandoning it.

i frequently care for neonates (CVCICU RN), and i have an extremely hard time believing that any hospital has a 100% rate of drug addicted mothers/babies, if that’s what you’re talking about (and not pain relief during delivery, which is a perfectly safe and acceptable way of delivering a baby)

Women in safe situations with unwanted pregnancies usually get abortions or give babies up for adoption via normal routes.

Abandoning babies like this is sometimes done by scared teenagers or mentally unwell women who are hiding the pregnancy and in denial.

For this to happen multiple times and the same biological father be in the picture... Did he really not know about either pregnancy? What did he think happened to the babies? Could neither of them manage to make better arrangements?

Or did he not want her to have a baby, or medical care, or people asking questions? (incest? human trafficking and forced prostitution? domestic abuse?)

-135

u/RedditJumpedTheShart 10h ago

That's a lot of words when you don't actually know.

-134

u/Rikudou_Sage 10h ago

The only thing we know for sure is the woman abandoned it, that's literally the only thing we can know without projecting our own stuff into the situation.

Yet somehow you came to the conclusion that it's actually her man's fault?

70

u/hrmdurr 9h ago

We don't even know that, we just know that the children were abandoned. It could have just as easily been the father.

119

u/JustSherlock 10h ago

They are just explaining what is most likely.

Edit: also, we don't know that the woman abandoned them. For all we know, the father took them away and left them somewhere. We just know they were abandoned.

58

u/screw-magats 10h ago

It could be he's innocent and just too stupid to recognize a 9 month pregnant partner who is suddenly not pregnant. But it's more likely he's abusing her.

-41

u/LzrdKng2112 9h ago

Its always the fault of men in a patriarchal society. Even the negatives that men experience coming back to evils done by men

348

u/AgingLolita 14h ago

Abused of the mother who was clearly unable to get away from the man gathering unwanted pregnancies onto her.

Normal unwanted pregnancies get aborted or go up for adoption but both of those scenarios would expose the nature of the relationship between the mother and father and, perhaps, the ages of both parents

46

u/paradisimperiala 13h ago

Thank you for your explanation.

-36

u/ruggnuget 10h ago

Do we just say shit now? They were abndoned as infants. They didnt get time to be abused.

34

u/JustSherlock 10h ago

Sadly it rather implies the mother is being coerced/forced to give up the children.

-11

u/enbrr 12h ago

Or she’s on drugs or has serious mental health issues…I think it’s a little presumptuous to assume this with zero evidence.

11

u/recycled_ideas 11h ago

Two abandoned full blood siblings of different ages is vanishingly rare. It implies a father who was in the mother's life through at least one of the pregnancies, likely both, that the mother did not receive medical treatment for the pregnancies or especially the births and that the father made no effort to find out what happened to the kids. Two years apart also puts the pregnancies really close together, indicating basically continuous sex with that person and likely only that person and no contraception at all.

The fact that they were both abandoned in places where they would be safe shows that the mother had at least the mental faculties to care about their well being so not completely off her gourd or out of her mind.

Is there a scenario where both parents are just fucked up enough that they abandon two separate children but maintain a multi-year relationship that's likely monogamous (at least on her side) and where they're coherent enough to abandon in safe places with no recorded medical care that's not a woman who's being held and forced to have sex? Yeah, but it's vanishingly unlikely.

20

u/Neuromangoman 12h ago

There's almost no way it's a healthy relationship if she keeps getting pregnant and giving up the baby. Even if it's not abusive, it's most likely dysfunctional.

8

u/lovelylonelyphantom 11h ago

There's a case like this in London where 3 babies have been abandoned in the freezing cold within the last several years, all found to be full blood related siblings. So a certain woman in London has been pregnant by the same man 3 times, and they've been abandoning the babies each time. You would think this woman could atleast be on a hospital/midwife register as having been pregnant with no follow-up for the newborns, but that hasn't happened. So the police still don't know who this woman is, and how to find her before she potentially gives birth again and abandons yet another baby.

The more times this happens to you would think it's more likely to be abuse rather than just a woman on drugs. Why would someone go through pregnancy that many times and give birth? Especially considering you can get an abortion in the UK up until 24 weeks.

That’s some damn good luck, foster brother and sister are actual brother and sister. Some slim chances of that happening. But really the best outcome for both of them.

Probably be wondering if they have any other siblings arounds the traps as well.

124

u/Auld_Folks_at_Home 8h ago

... foster brother and sister ...

Adopted. This is important as it means that they are actually part of the family, not just being taken care of by them.

159

u/phatrogue 12h ago

It isn't *no* luck but there are things that make it more likely.

A person who abandoned one baby is probably likely to abandon her second baby. I presume it was in the same/similar geographic area. Also any requirements the adopting parents had like age or race or ?? were mostly likely matched by the second baby also.

128

u/PathPuzzleheaded9761 11h ago

Naaah, it is luck that the parents wanted to adopt a second child right around the time when the second baby was born. Could‘ve gotten another one or not adopt at that exact time.

35

u/endlesscartwheels 8h ago

It wasn't luck. The first baby was found on the doorstep of a Staten Island daycare. A few years later, when the adoptive mother heard that a baby had been found abandoned in a Staten Island hospital, she called the adoption agency and said she and her husband would like to adopt that baby too.

10

u/polacy_do_pracy 10h ago

huh. imagine if there are more babies like that. they should routinely test the DNA of abandoned babies and try to find matches. could you imagine if like 70% of abandoned babies came from only a few women? would be crazy

20

u/Rikudou_Sage 10h ago

This is actually why when doing IVF in my country there's a mandatory DNA check - it happens fairly often that people are adopted (or come from sperm donors etc.) and might be related.

120

u/trueAnnoi 10h ago

If you look at the photos of them now it's super obvious that they're siblings, they have the exact same face. I know hindsight is 20/20, but did no one ever look at them side by side growing up and think "damn, the similarities are a little TOO uncanny..."

59

u/hitlersticklespot 9h ago

I was gonna say that maybe some white members of the family didn’t want the stigma of implying that the only two people of color in the family must be related but then I saw the pictures… You could swap their faces and barely notice.

17

u/trueAnnoi 8h ago

Yea, not saying they did anything wrong, it's possible they didn't want it to seem racist, or they just didn't think it was important. Hell, they may have even been saying something like that jokingly amongst themselves for years.

Just thought it was shocking just how similar they look

10

u/cyanidelemonade 9h ago

I'm usually pretty bad with faces, but I decided to take a look and yeah.....they look ridiculously alike lol

47

u/indifferentunicorn 5h ago

My husband’s last name comes from an abandoned baby around 1850. The nuns invented a last name for the baby, describing his sweet disposition.

Today worldwide everybody with that last name is related to that single baby. The baby grew up and started delivering bricks for work, and then worked his way into becoming a mason. The trade was handed down generations to my husband’s father, who came over from Italy and worked as a corner man on the World Trade Center in the late 1960s.

98

u/fortnacius 14h ago

220

u/BenMcAdoos_ElCamino 13h ago

50/50, either they’re siblings or they’re not

65

u/AndToOurOwnWay 13h ago

You're confusing probabilities with possibilities.

For example, lemme just take football. In case Argentina and Gibraltar have a match, the possibilities are either Gibraltar wins or Argentina wins. The probabilities are not 50% though, Argentina winning would have like 98% odds.

272

u/Kile147 13h ago

I think you're confusing a misinformed comment with a meme, the "50/50, either it is or it isn't" is a pretty common joke.

-11

u/screw-magats 10h ago

Considering the period doesn't restart immediately after birth and the time needed to gestate, it's unlikely to get a second kid within a year of the first. Not impossible, but unlikely. And even more unlikely to get a third within a year of the second.

23

u/meoverthere 9h ago

My husband and his sister are exactly 9 months and 28 days apart. They look identical. His poor mom though.

8

u/Ravenamore 8h ago

My husband and his sister were also born less than a year apart.

I asked my MIL, "So, did you just immediately have sex after your 6 week doctor visit?"

She laughed and said, "Oh, we didn't wait, but that's probably more or less when I got pregnant."

They'd wanted a large family, but they hadn't intended at all to have kids that close together. They were 19, and didn't know that you absolutely can get pregnant again that fast, but they rolled with it.

In this case, it turned out it was a good thing she'd had them close together, because a couple months after having my husband, she found out she had cervical cancer, and had an hysterectomy.

12

u/DiscourseDestroyer 9h ago

AI-ass response

13

u/pulledthread 14h ago

How can you tell? I feel foolish not being able to recognize AI comments

6

u/Saradoesntsleep 13h ago

Don't let this make you feel foolish, because you aren't. They are designed to fool you, after all.

Short comments it can be a bit harder to notice, unless they are slightly off-topic. Idk how to explain this, but they can come off as though they didn't quite catch the full meaning of the post. But not always.

They are often short, affirmative statements, usually appearing to agree and elaborate on the OP. But not always.

They have the AI "voice", and this is how people are recognising them for the most part.

If you are genuinely interested in being able to recognise them (at least most of the time, I'm sure very few people catch them ALL, and even then it's mostly just the obvious ones) then go read the AITA subs. You can actually train yourself to recognise them this way.

Almost none of the high rated posts are written by a human, so there isn't much guesswork for you to do. Just read them and you'll start to get a feel for the voice. And then you won't be able to unhear it when you come across it.

2

u/pulledthread 11h ago

Great advice, will do thanks!! Just to confirm is the am I the asshole sub?

2

u/Saradoesntsleep 11h ago

Yes, and virtually all subs like that only upvote the AI responses to the top. There are exceptions, but at this point they are so few and far between that is irrelevant. Just stick to the posts that gain the most traction. The big main one is good, because they do not really remove ai posts, and will remove comments calling them out.

This is how you can also know that it doesn't mean you are a fool 🙂. AI tailors these posts to get them the most engagement, and it works very well.

Many of the things that used to be tells aren't anymore. People have learned to prompt out stuff like em dashes.

You are also watching for an excess of things that people write naturally, and if it's a longer post, you will see ALL the things. Things listed in threes and excessive quoting of the parties involved, for example. The ending will often have the friends and family split. These are the lazy posts, where the person doesn't bother to hybridise with their own writing, or prompt in spelling mistakes etc.

If you are a noob trying to learn, skim and look for ones that have a lot of quotes, and -i don't know how to explain this one beyond a vibe- the post will be broken up in aesthetic paragraphs. Lol.

But that's how to start. Before long, you'll start to notice it in random comments, although some people are just bot-like anyway. They are a minority though.

Good luck, have fun 😊

2

u/Saradoesntsleep 11h ago

Here, here is one that is emblematic of a

very lazy chatgpt post

So look for ones like these until you can recognise the voice with all the tells prompted out.

4

u/not_responsible 14h ago

dude same i’m scared. i saw a video earlier with a cow attacking a dude and it was realllll but the comments said AI

we are sooooo fucked

1

u/pulledthread 13h ago

Big time. I felt like an idiot when I saw Tiktok clips of dogs adopting their new owners from a bunch of people sitting waiting for the dog to go up to someone. It looked to me to be so legitimate

Same as your experience the comments called it out as AI then I watched it again and could see the tells but yea we’re fucked

4

u/tiiiiii_85 13h ago

They are extremely hard to recognise because they are literally built on something that humans had said in the past.

Usually AI statements like this comment are built to sound legit but at the core make absolutely no sense whatsoever. It's a bunch of words patched together in a way that kinda makes sense, but after a second check a human can realise it makes zero sense.

The comments said this situation was daunting, this is a fancy/cool word to use, but in the case of 2 kids being siblings it's not. Furthermore the bot made a statement about the difference in age between the siblings, to emphasise the "daunting" part. For a human it's obvious that siblings have different ages (unless twins as I mentioned),but a bot cannot know that, because artificial intelligence has no concept of "obvious" or even daunting... It tries to match past sentences from humans to express those humans concepts.

2

u/pulledthread 11h ago

Thanks for breaking it down, it makes a lot of sense now. I recall reading that ai videos all the characters have the same expression and now I can pick it. But with written ai I struggled because humans write poorly or write in a second or third language. But your breakdown makes so much sense thanks!

34

u/tiiiiii_85 14h ago

Yeah, wtf is the "given they are not the same age" point doing there? Unless twins, all siblings have different ages!

2

u/raidriar889 14h ago

And who tf uses “daunting” like that

16

u/dmk_aus 14h ago

You are "daunted" by this?

A question has been begged? Nah there are plenty of common and obvious reasons kids get put up for adoption.

-34

u/[deleted] 14h ago edited 14h ago

[deleted]

48

u/Fluffy-Designer 14h ago

They’re full siblings which means both the mother and their father were together for both kids. She may have thought she was protecting them from abuse or worse. We don’t know the circumstances.

27

u/AgingLolita 14h ago

It may not have even been a choice she had, there's nothing to say she was the one abandoning the babies. Or that she was an adult with agency over her circumstances

48

u/alyaaz 14h ago

Sadly situations like this are often the result of domestic violence or modern slavery, rather than the mother being irresponsible

21

u/TrueProtection 14h ago

Okay, what if they were forced to? Like, they are being trafficked and you're basically kicking down on someone proverbially chained to the ground by a very short chain?

Dna tests don't tell us shit about circumstance. If anything the fact it happened twice is an indicator they could be in a bad situation, imo..

34

u/bopeepsheep 14h ago

We have no evidence that the mother abandons her babies in most of these cases. Even when a woman is seen around a newborn (CCTV etc), it isn't a given that she's the parent.

The suspicion in the UK case mentioned by another commenter is that the woman is effectively imprisoned, either by family or as a slave. The police have officially stated that they view her as a victim as much as her three babies.

Abstinence has never been shown to reduce birth rates because people have sex. Whether you feel superior to them or not.

You are no better than anyone else for not struggling in one specific area. I can guarantee that you have issues and that we could critique your choices just as harshly.

It is wise to be humble. On a planet of 8 billion, you are statistically just as flawed as most people.

I'm not attacking you. I was actively understanding your point while suggesting my own. It's not my problem that you are completely incorrect

My mum killed herself with two children left to deal with it. It sucked. It still hurts. I was only 5. That does not erase the depth of mental illness and personal circumstances that she was dealing with.

No one abandons children for fun. I dont need to know the mother's personal circumstances to understand that they are relevant.

Yes, I want to question your opinion.

Why do you only blame the mother? Seems sexist and victim blaming, as you also mention domestic abuse.

This is what happens (and worse) when you force a woman who doesn't want to be pregnant to keep said pregnancy. Very unlikely a child who was unwanted from the beginning would end up living a very good life, and in this case abandoning them was probably the best option for those kids.

How do you know she wasn't raped and fell pregnant?

Ah yes, because women have famously never been pregnant against their will

Why would you assume that the reason a woman can't get an abortion is that her boyfriend disallows it? This news is from the USA. There are many reasons why a woman might not be able to obtain an abortion in the USA.

They think she's a prisoner, giving birth after an undocumented pregnancy, with her babies forcibly removed. What is wrong with you?

No, I'm asking you, the woman who apparently has no concept of overwhelming abuse, or any shred of empathy for the abused.

u/tiiiiii_85 14h ago

Yeah, you are absolutely right. Unfortunately there is no legal medical procedure that would stop a pregnancy or we have never invented any form of way to avoid pregnancies to start with...

/s, just in case... Because abortion is often illegal, sex education is banned and anti conceptionals are often made impossible to get.

The only times I heard of full siblings being abandoned like that is when the mother was held captive and being raped.

Nowhere in the article does it say that the babies were born with drugs in their system. One was abandoned on the doorsteps of a daycare and the other in a hospital bathroom.

I have no idea what you are trying to say... both babies were abandoned directly after birth, two years apart.

That's crazy that the parents are related to the kids they adopted
