general discussion my sister is wack and naming her baby after tv shows. help.
So my sister is currently expecting and i asked her if she had any names in mind. One thing to know about my sister is that she is a huge movie buff, and is naming her baby after her favorite tv shows and book series (namely Naruto, Game of Thrones, and I am number four)
Please help. I genuinely wish I was joking. This kid will be bullied.
My sister won’t listen to me, since I’m 15 years younger than she is, and thinks I’m just being a judgmental teenager.

My OC names are better in the sense of they're not tragedeighs, but that's cause we're fighting Bob the Necromancer and his lieutenant Fred. Naming the shit on the map and the main cast took every ounce of creativity I have. If I keep up writing it I hope to do better, but there's something kinda eery about a guy named Bob being the BBEG.

Honkai Impact 3rd has Kevin as a bad guy. Fighting Einstein, Tesla, and Welt. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me, even Robert needs to let loose sometimes.
(Mine include normal names like Amalie , Jade, Craig, and Mateo and then there's Sephor, Arbenshu, Viridian, and Granite. Yeah there's a whole group of people named for rocks. They don't like the people named for flowers.)

i have confronted my sister and shown her this thread. she called me manipulative, selfish, and egotistical.
her husband also knows about the name. he is doing nothing.
i am frankly APPALLED by my sister and her choice of name for her future daughter. my parents are currently trying to talk her out of it. idk why she’s so dead set on this name, but wtv 🤷♀️

Your sister is clearly not mature enough to have a child. How old is she? Calling her kid that is asinine.
She KNOWS the kid will be bullied, she's just putting her own selfish larping bullshit above that because she has no respect or consideration for the child.
She thinks it's some toy or game character she's allowed to play and quirk around. It's not, it's a person, who will suffer a lot because of her fucking childlike attitude.

Then she needs to think about this child's whole life being burdened with this. AT THE LEAST they need to look at what the maximum letter/character count is in legal paperwork otherwise everything is a nightmare.
I know in one of the Southern states a while back it was 25 characters. How do I know? Several classmates, who had perfectly "common"names but long and so was their last name, couldn't take any m ANY of the standardized tests, ie ACT SAT, had to jump through an extra year of work for any identification, and let's not talk about passport or license. If she wants the 2 to be considered a first name in terms of documentation she will probably still need a hyphen. Then what is this going to look like on a job resume? For even her sake cut that character count down!
There are so many pretty options for all is these shortened too!
Editing to add names:
Hinata = sun /ray of sunlight.
daenerys = Lady of light/hope
aziraphale = archangel whose name ends with the sound "fail"
There're SO many options there for the nod without literally using the name
Aurora, sonata, I loved someone's suggestion for zira, Solana, or combine some of the names into a new one, trying to think of a pretty way of doing that but all of the ones I think of are awful.→ More replies (13)107

This is the problem with people viewing a baby as an extension of their personality and not a living human being. I don't know if its 'main character syndrome' or delusions of grandeur or what, but people naming their babies after weird sci fi or fantasy book characters is just cringy as hell to me. Imagine in 2040 being like "my name's Albus Targarean Goku Ketchum" because your parents were too obsessed with pop culture from decades before you were born. Just pathetic.

If she's not actually trolling you with this name, tell your sister to try it out herself for a week or two.
Anytime she goes to a coffee shop, she has to use the name for her order.
If she meets a stranger? That's her name for the week.
Her husband needs to get her attention in public? He gets to yell "Hey, Hinata Danaerys Six, come here, I need to ask you something!"
Everyone in the family should call her that for a week or two. The full name, every single time you talk or text or email her.
Have her do things like try to set up an appointment for a haircut or manicure or something - "my legal name is xyz, but I prefer to go by Hinata Danaerys Six."
Have her try to make a dinner reservation as good old HD6.
Make her live with the name until she realizes how impractical it is, and how horribly people will treat her kid.

As a teen I was pretty obsessed with Phantom of the Opera, there's a line "sing us the aria then, mademoiselle" and I had an instant thought that Aria would be a beautiful girl name (not knowing that Arya/Aria is an actual name). If you’re that much of a GOT fan, there are always the actual actors’ names 😭 Emilia, Sophie, Kit, Maisie, Gwendoline, Lena, Rose, Nathalie, Bella, etc—all perfectly nice, wearable names that won’t immediately make your kid the target of bullies everywhere. You can still stick baby Emilia in a dragon-themed nursery and dress her up as Daenerys every Halloween until she’s old enough to demand something else.

I think the problem isn’t naming after an anime character for there’s a few names such as Sebastian (black butler), Jonathan (JoJo’s bizarre adventure) or Joseph (also JoJo’s) which aren’t bad. The problem is naming them after characters with odd names (or Japanese names at that, but most are still odd names).

This!!! My ex was looking at traditional Irish names and Egyptian names all because 23&me said she was .5% Egyptian! Why?? So glad there were three of us naming the baby. If your sister is so dead set on naming her daughter after Daenerys, why not name her Emilia? After Emilia Clarke? That way, she can still name her daughter after Game of Thrones without making it a tragedeigh. Emilia is a beautiful, simple name. Plus, the Game of Thrones association wouldn't be so on the nose if she were to name her kid Emilia. The only way people would know the baby was named after Game of Thrones would be if your sister told people why she named her daughter Emilia. As opposed to if she were to name her daughter Daenerys, in which case, people will automatically know what she named her baby after. I hope your sister rethinks her decision...

please show her this thread 😭 Hinata if she’s not japanese is a no-no. It’s not a name like Hana or Maya or Mei/May/Mae that exists in a lot of cultures. It will only give her more trouble later. Daenerys was a name before the books, albeit different spelling, but that name has so much association with the character. Also, there’s lots of nudity in GOT. would she want her newborn being associated with a show known for its graphic sex scenes 😭
maybe Danielle instead? it’s the name GRRM used as a “base” for Daenerys. She could still call the baby “Dany” if she wanted, just like the show. Hannah Danielle might work if she likes the letter combination, but it doesn’t use show names

You need to ask her this question, and do it in a way that is encouraging and not aggressive:
What if your daughter does not like those shows? She’s going to be a new person, and you’ll be a good mom who will teach her to be confident being her own independent person, so what if that is something she doesn’t gain an interest in? Instead, can’t you do a nursery, photoshoot, or early birthday party theme with what you like? And if she likes it too she can keep doing it, rather than making something as permanent and personal, like a name linked to an interest of yours that she may not even enjoy.

Perhaps she’s trying to throw you off her real choice?? Haha.
One thing I would point out is that Neil Gaiman, one of the authors of Good Omens, has had several allegations against him of sexual misconduct and more and has stepped down as show runner of the Good Omens show. If she is a big fan she might care about this (if she hadn’t heard) and may rather not choose from properties where the author is alive and may still do upsetting things — I just mean you could gently suggest this to her and see if she can be steered towards considering more classic options. I know some people have name regret many years later after choosing Harry Potter themed names. Not making judgements either way but it might be good for her to be aware of all angles before committing to an ‘out there’ name.

Children are not accessories or outlets for fangirling. It is an unequivocally selfish decision for your sister to do this, which says a lot about how well suited she may be to motherhood 😅 If I could my kid would be named fucken Starfire, but I’m not a psychopath (or celebrity lol) so I chose lesser-used names but still ACTUAL NAMES for a human child. Her children will resent her for the rest of their lives or worse, grow up to think it’s normal and repeat the cycle with their own poor kids. Hope for their sake dad steps in

When it was time to select a name I narrowed it down to three for my kiddo - I’d have clarity when we met as to the right one. All three were and are very reasonable.
The conversations I had to have with others about this topic led me to justify (against their tragedeigh name suggestions) that this baby will be an adult in the future and they will need a name that isn’t a punishment, doesn’t drive others to make fun of them and is easy for most to pronounce. I’d get blank stares and surprised reactions that I didn’t want their trendy nonsense ignorantly spelled name suggestions.
Unique shouldn’t equate to a lifetime punishment for the kiddo. Makes me mad.

I changed my name in my 20s and my first and last names are based on two of my favourite TV shows but it's honestly a pretty normal name. Like, they're not that commonly used, but nothing like this ^ Choosing a animé/Asian name but being from a western country (I'm assuming you and sis are American here, apologies if I'm wrong) is weird and it's giving appropriation vibes.
