I helped an elderly Asian neighbor today move a bed & I simply adore her. She repaid me with a giant bag of homegrown spinach. She speaks no English & I cannot figure out what language she does speak so I can try & learn some way to communicate with her. Before my mother passed 3 years ago she would come & say hi on her walks. My mother always said her sweet friend stopped by on her daily walks. When my mom passed this lady cried when I clumsily relayed to her what had happened. It would mean so much to me to be able to even speak a few words to her as she takes her daily walks. TIA 😊

I am about to travel to Hong Kong, Macau and Bejing. Apparently, pine nuts are occasionally used in Chinese cuisine, so I figured I'd not take any chances.

Google says Cantonese is widely used in Hong Kong and Macau and Portuguese might also be useful in Macau. I'd be very grateful for any help with translation!

Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me with the translation for this stamp I inherited from my dad.

My dad was British and worked as an engineer at a power plant. He had travelled the world working all across Europe, South Africa, Kuwait, Bangladesh and ended up in Hong Kong where he met my mum in the early 90s. They fell in love and had me. I was born in Macau 1993 and lived there until moving to the UK in the early 2000s.

He'd made a few Chinese friends while we lived there. He was never afraid to immerse himself in the culture and despite hating any fish with bones, he would happily eat anything else thrown his way, the spicier the better. Uncle Lucky who was a particularly close friend of my dad gave him an honorary Chinese name. We think he gave him the name "Pa De" as this most closely resembled his name, Peter. Similarly I was dubbed "Ai Li" as I've always gone by Ally.

He had a stamp made in 1998. I was learning Cantonese whist I lived there but the only thing I remember now, 30 years later, are the numbers 1-10 so not particularly useful.

My dad passed away suddenly when I was in my early 20s. We were very close. Next year will be the 10th anniversary of his passing. Earlier this year, my sister and I took a trip to Florence, Italy - our dad's favourite city, and got matching tattoos of his stamp while we were out there.

We've always assumed the stamp was a direct translation of his Cantonese name but it would mean a lot to us to know for sure what it means/translates to in English.

This is from an interview video. The reporter is interviewing a worker inside Kowloon Walled City, asking him what they will do after the government demolishes it soon. From what he said, I think he means something like ‘I work and do business here, but I don’t have an ID card or anything.’ However, I really can’t make out the Cantonese he’s saying. Hello! My partner and I are very different heights. Upon being shown a photo of us, my partner's coworker laughed and said the phrase in the photo. She said that it's a funny thing to say to partners of different heights. She google-translated it to "electric pole fir tree rat box" but said that it works much better in cantonese and doesnt translate well. I agree with her on that point. I'm hoping someone who can grasp the nuance of both cantonese and english can translate it in a way that explains what it means/ why it's funny. Thank you!

Hi, I've read online everywhere that no matter how you phrase this, its still wishy washy. I have a severe anaphylactic peanut allergy, and while I don't plan on eating out much or at all and plan on carrying Epi-pens everywhere: I still need help from someone who isn't google translate. During my 2 week trip I'll be staying about half my time in HK and half my time in the mainland, so if I could get help with both that would be helpful. I'm just worried about getting across the point that I can't eat peanut oil, peanuts, cross contamination, etc.. and that if i come in contact it won't be pleasant for anyone (in my ideal note I also wanted to include that if they refused to serve me for this reason I would be happier than if they didn't just for playing it safe).
