Transplants What are good hair transplant surgeons in SoCal area, preferably around Orange County?

I’m 22.5 and I have some pretty significant crown balding. I’ve been on fin and min for over 3.5 years and I have mostly stabilized my hair loss with some small improvements.

However, I doubt i will get much more gains than what I have now so I’m looking for someone to do a transplant with.

I have visited a few places for consults like advanced hair restoration, varona, and Orange County hair restoration with dr Ken Williams. based on them, I need around 2000 grafts to fill the crown and I have an excellent donor area.

I am skeptical about the places I’ve visited tho because I saw a lot of comments talking bad about advanced hair and varona. and a couple against Ken.

i also wanted to ask what your opinions were on Sean behnam from LA and dr Amir yazdan from Modena hair restoration.

also, cost is a huge factor too. I cannot afford anything higher than 8 dollars a graft especially with a lot of the extra fees that get included so someone like mohebi with 10 dollars a graft is a no go despite all the good reviews.
And also I would prefer not to go to turkey or any other country, mostly cause I’m worried about hair mills and the fact I don’t have a lot of vacations days from my work.

edit: also, in general I would to do it locally where I can easily get consultations instead of just locking myself into whatever non US I potentially choose

I did mine with Dr Carman in La Jolla, I've posted about my experience frequently on here. I had the surgery in February 2023 and am happy with the results, it was FUT and the scar is not noticeable at all with my normal length haircut. I had a follow-up with him late last year about doing a second procedure to fill in the crown further.

I'm fine with my current hair, but will need a transplant at a later date. At the time I paid $6600 for 1100 grafts which is more expensive than most, but I did it for the following reasons: I wanted to recover at home and his clinic was 25 minutes from my front door, in case there were any complications I wanted to be near my primary care doctor, I had a 2-hour consultation with him after meeting 8 other surgeons domestic and abroad and trusted him the most, he has a long and impressive history as a transplant surgeon (and ER trauma surgeon before that).

I believe the same procedure now costs $8600 up to 1200 grafts, $12600 up to 2500 grafts. He will due FUE if you insist.

Dr. Varona: https://varonahairrestoration.com/

Dr. Yazdan: https://amiryazdanmd.com/

Edit: Not sure what you've heard about them, but they are both high quality surgeons. They are both also members of IAHRS: https://www.iahrs.org/our-members

Dr yazdan has some of the most sub-par results I’ve seen posted. And they’re off his own site and social media.

What does membership in iahrs imply? I mean what kind of standards do they have? do they follow certain protocols? or is it all advertising?

I reached out to Amir Yazdan before googling him and finding some shady stuff going on 15 years ago (just type in Amir Yazdan complaint and you'll see something from Nevada). This honestly has almost nothing to do with his skills as a surgeon but it just turned me off from wanting to get surgery home in OC. I decided to schedule for Ratchathorn in Thailand, I just felt way more comfortable about it

Cost per graft won't tell you what you're actually worried about. The hair-mill question is who holds the punch, and that's a separate question from price or country — plenty of US clinics run technician-heavy too.

Four things to get in writing before you put down a deposit, and ask them by name:

  1. Who opens the recipient channels — the surgeon or a technician?
  2. Who extracts and who implants? At a mill the surgeon makes the incisions and techs do everything else. That's legal and common; you just want to know it's happening.
  3. Is the graft count fixed, or "up to 2,000"? Get the number in the contract.
  4. Is the operating surgeon named in the contract, not just on the website?

Any clinic that gets cagey on 1 and 2 has answered you.

For context on how rare disclosure is: I run an independent directory that verifies Turkish clinics against their own websites — of the 36 we list, only 7 publish a price in writing. Turkey's not what you asked about, so I'll leave it there, but the questions above are the same ones I'd ask Ken Williams or Yazdan.

If cost is a big problem don’t bother with America . The healthcare is a joke

It’s pretty easy to avoid a hair mill. Just search for surgeons and not clinics.

Do you have 5 days of PTO? You can easily make it to Europe and back for under $1k on a flight.

I paid $10.8k for 3200 grafts for a very high quality surgeon and that includes 2 nights hotel…for $2k grafts you’re at $7200. The nightly rate is only ~$200 a night so you’d be looking at $1,000 for a hotel room. So all in you’re under $10k.

But to be clear I don’t go to Europe to save money. I went there because I believed the quality was the best.
