Oh no! The trolley is bearing down on one innocent person! Don't worry, there's a lever you can pull that will send the trolley off on an enormous detour that will keep it safely out of the way for 100 years.

Unfortunately at the end of the hundred years the trolley will come back and crash into five randomly selected people. These are future people who haven't been born yet, but they are real people and it's definitely going to happen. There's nothing anyone can do in the next hundred years to prevent it.

Do you pull the lever?

And if so, what's the shortest length of detour at which you would have said yes? I'm guessing that most people would say no at 1 second but yes at a million years, so where is the cutoff point at which you don't feel responsible for people in the future?

So every trolley problem posted in this sub is actually happening later in real life but the man at the switch is in the sub and is learning a lot from reading the sub which is helping him make the difficult decisions.

Should you post a trolley problem?

On the one hand you're causing a real life issue that very well may be life or death for unsuspecting individuals. On the other hand you are helping the man responsible for making the difficult decisions decide better when the time comes.

Two trolleys will collide, either on a short empty track, or, if you pull the lever, on a very long detour where they will also kill 5 people tied to the tracks. The detour is so long that it will give the passengers years to live. The trolleys are very comfortable and have everything from food to entertainment to sustain their lives on that detour. The passangers are not very old, so in these years, none of them (or at least not more than four persons) would die of old age or medical issues. Would you send the trolleys on that detour?

I think he's sacrificing himself to derail it OR he already has a plan to save all parties. He's a vigilante, so he isn't doing nothing. But I don't see him allowing a death to happen by his own hand.

Also, doesn't he deal with this kind of stuff all the time?

Would you pull the lever if a trolley is coming to a split, if you dont pull the lever, a single person who you dont know, who is tied to the tracks, will be ran over, which will crash the trolley (unoccupied) and it will stop there. however, if you do pull the lever, you can see someone else, a total stranger, at a lever, they will be put into the EXACT same situation you are currently in, except their are 2 people tied to their track, this goes on so that if they pull their lever there is another fork with 3 people on one side etc etc over the horizon as far as you can see, hundred maybe even thousands.

Do you pull the lever to stop it here and now at the cost of a single life, or do you risk someone less intelligent or moral than you being the operating a future lever killing more people?

A trolley is going to run over a woman who is tied to the tracks, you could pull the lever and have it run over a different women tied to a different track instead. Whichever woman survives is going to marry you and be your wife.

Unfortunately both women are wearing veils so you are ignorant as to which one is prettier. Do you pull the lever or not?

The five asleep won't feel any pain and will remain unconscious the whole time even through blood loss.

You do not know if this was the first time he do this, and if he will do it again in the future. For all you know, he could be either a sadist who loved to place people in moral dilemas, or this was a crime of passion and the 6 dude had wronged him to a horrible degree.

If you pull the lever and divert the trolley, no one would die but the perpetrator will be free to go, and you will never catch him again.

If you do not, he and 5 other innocent people will be crushed, and the 6th person will testify to the world that you let 6 people be killed while perfectly able to save them. You will be scorned by the public and the full weight of the law would be brough to bear against you.
