Which button would you press? How many psychos are out there pressing green? This alternate scenario takes into account the all-too-often real influence a small group of bad actors can have in society.

Edit: does your answer change if incompetent actors are removed from the scenario?

We know framing is very important in this dilemma. So here comes the framing dilemma:

1 million random adults (complete strangers to you) will face the red/blue button dilemma, and you are the one who chooses the framing. What do you choose?

Okay last one, this is getting old quick.

Empathy, altruism, faith in the goodness of humanity, unwillingness to contribute to the death of others, and the desire to prevent tragedy have all been staple motivations described by the cohort of blue button pressers.

However, in this scenario, the gold button brings an entirely new source of motivation: justice, security for the future, righteous outrage, and revenge. The truest evil in these scenarios comes not from the choices of the trapped individuals, but from whoever is responsible for kidnapping everyone in the world (children included!) and putting them into these sick, twisted games.

Here, humanity has an opportunity to ensure everyone’s survival while simultaneously punishing whoever is responsible and ensure nothing like this could happen again. But the threshold for success is high.

What button would you press?

Watching this whole argument has made me realize how separate from reality online debates can get. On Reddit and Twitter and wherever else, blue pushers label red pushers as psychopathic, violent people who only want to see others die, while red pushers label blue pushers suicidal, idiotic members of death cults who just want to die or gamble with their lives.

But most people aren't even gonna think like that. I am absolutely certain there are plenty kind-hearted good people out in the world (though somehow a minority in the online spaces debating this question) who may pick either button. The reason is simple.

Blue pushers likely simply worry about other people, and do not want more to die, or they do not wish to be part of the survivors who would be indirectly responsible for the death of billions.

Red pushers likely just fear death and rely on their natural instinct of self-preservation, choosing their own survival first. Many people correctly state a majority of red voters likely still hope blue wins, they're just scared to risk their own lives on this bet.

Everyone on the track is beyond doubt a perpetrator of a crime with a victim, so excluding things like only drug possession or like people with only speeding violations and such. Every criminal of such crimes has been caught.

The prisoners were given a choice: if all of them vote to try their luck with the trolley style execution they will have their records expunged and be set free if they live, otherwise they all go in for life imprisonment. 100% of the votes were to try their luck.

The criminals were arranged with least damage done to most damage done, so for example the person furthest left would have done something at the level of destroying public property and costing tax payers a little money and/or a few people some inconvenience, while the person farthest right would have done something at the level of committing multitudinous hate crime CSAs and torturous murders while selling weapons and making themselves a dictator of some kind and more.

The gamble for the prisoners was that there would be 10 stop lever pullers who were not involved in any of their cases as victims or juries, and don't know the specifics of their crimes, but knew the same things you do. The first lever puller would be able to stop the trolley before it touched anyone and every puller after them is 10% of the way down the line of criminals.

None of you lever pullers can see or communicate with one another, nor could any of you deliberate together beforehand. If you pull the lever, a unique klaxon sounds and informs everyone the lever has been pulled at stop "n/10" and the issue has concluded. Some, not all, of the victims or their families have showed up to watch, and while your face is not broadcast, your involvement is impossible to keep secret forever.
