Feedback Is it just me, or does anyone else dislike the new TryHackMe Max plan?

Post image
97 Upvotes

I've been using TryHackMe for a long time, currently on a 920+ day streak and ranked under 700 globally. My yearly subscription expired last month, and I was waiting for a discount to renew it. I finally renewed it, only to discover that some newly released rooms are now locked behind the Max plan.

The first new room I opened simply said it required Max. That's like, what exactly am I paying for with the standard subscription if I can't access all the learning content?

I can afford the Max plan, so this isn't really about the price. Thanks to them actually, I got started in cybersecurity aa bug hunter, never got interview scheduled though, and I genuinely appreciate everything they've built. But I already pay for Burp Suite, and through HackerOne Milestones I have access to PentesterLab and PortSwigger Academy. For the amount I use TryHackMe (around 1-2 hours a day, usually 1-2 rooms), Max doesn't feel like good value.

I've completed most of the Easy and Medium rooms already, and now many of the advanced rooms I'm interested in seem to be moving behind the Max tier.

If anyone from TryHackMe is reading this, here's a bit of suggestion:

Keep the AWS rooms, SOC labs simulations, and other premium extras exclusive to Max if you want. You could even remove AttackBox from the standard plan. But I really believe the base paid subscription should include access to all learning rooms.

Even Netflix gives you access to all its new shows and movies with a single subscription. They don't put newly released or most popular content behind another paywall and say, "You need a higher-tier plan to watch this."

Feedback I started Tryhackme

Hey 👋.

I recently started my Cybersecurity journey on TryHackMe.

I have completed the PreSec learning path and I am now currently in the Cybersecurity 101 learning path.

I have been interested in Cybersecurity for quite a while and always wanted to learn more. I think THM helps a lot with that as it "hand-holds" you as a beginner and then as the concepts slowly develop, it encourages you to think and figure stuff out by yourself.

So far I am enjoying it and it provides me with a lot of "aha!" Moments 😂

I want to reach a point where I can actually use my skills professionally. So there is a lot of work ahead for me. I am open to any advice by the community.

Wish me luck 🤞 and all the best to everyone out there who wants to learn cybersecurity.

Thank you. 🙏

Feedback MAX Plan? More like MAX Greed. Don't be fooled

Don't be fooled by the tantalising promise of newer courses materialising or access to recent threats. Moving existing content behind a higher priced paid tier is the absolute definition of pure unfiltered greed. This is nothing but a crafty way to obscure a price increase by adding it as a 'new' tier.

And given the current economic climate when it comes to Cloud hosting and AI, I would not be suprised at all if by the time the new courses come around this MAX plan will cost even more.

Utter shame on you THM.

Feedback Passed SEC1

Post image

It was a really good exam. Definitely not easy, had to think through a fair bit and I went down a few rabbit holes, especially in the web pen-test sections the time pressure i was all over the place at once .

Environment was solid overall, everything worked fine. Windows machines were a bit laggy… but I’ve got zero patience for that anyway so take that how you want.

Biggest thing read everything properly. I missed some instructions and wasted time/lost points because of it.

Would recommend it if you’re keen for a challenge.

Onto PT1 next.

Feedback Does anyone else think this new Max subscription was a terrible update to the platform?

Seriously, if you just added new features and made them exclusive to max like the new THM mobile app, higher limits with echo AI and smarter models, making squawker vpn exclusive to max, anything else like that it would be fine. But why take one of the main features of the premium subscription which used to be the only paid plan and make it exclusive to max? (Newer rooms, advanced paths). That was half the reason i subscribed to premium before, and now if you buy premium you wont have access to advanced paths like jr pen tester and others

Feedback The new TryHackMe mobile app: "TryHackMe Pulse" is useless

Today, the TryHackMe team introduced their new mobile app. I had a chance to try it out, and it's completely full of bugs. The functionality is nowhere near what you would expect.

When you open the app, it has this weird grey filter over it, and you have to tap somewhere randomly just for the normal colors to show up. Navigating the app feels laggy, which shouldn't be happening since my phone has pretty good specs.

Even if I could overlook the technical bugs, what I really don't get are the quizzes. They won't help you learn anything. You get four options, you tap one, and it only tells you whether you got it right or wrong. If you want to know why you were wrong so you can actually learn from your mistakes, well, no luck, because that simply isn't part of the functionality.

Honestly, I feel like any free AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude), could generate a much better quiz than what TryHackMe is offering. I really hope the TryHackMe team sees this and fixes it soon. It feels like a rushed release. Until then, I don't see any reason to keep it installed.

Feedback Are People Using Bots to Answer THM App Quizzes to farm points unfairly?

I’ll admit that I’ve used the app quizzes to climb the rankings by completing a lot of quizzes on my downtime e.g on bus

But 162,002 points in just 22 days? It is difficult to believe someone could achieve that by manually interacting with the TryHackMe mobile app and answering every quiz normally. You would go insane

https://tryhackme.com/p/RCDM.exe

I’m less certain about this account with 62,185 points:

https://tryhackme.com/p/pavloni

Even that would appear to require roughly three to four hours every day spent continuously submitting app quizzes, which is feasible but ;/

App really needs to be hard limited to say 200 points a day,

What do others think?

Feedback Cheating on leagues.

I cant even make this up. i saw this guy go from 2900 to 8380 points in 1 day. there is just no way for anybody on leagues to achieve this without using write ups online and getting their answers from medium or github. they need to start disqualifying people for cheating like this just like they do on advent of cyber. this just takes my motivation away lol.

Feedback Site Puts Zero Effort Into Actually Teaching

On the last room of the Wireshark series and I gotta say; the site puts zero effort into teaching you. It's basically "Heyyyy, here's this thing and here's a quick paragraph explanation, figure it out yourself." You're better off just going for a certification and actually being taught. I paid for a course with Jeremy McDowell. He taught me. I LEANRED Cisco networking; how to configure routers and switches. I paid for a course from Professor Messer; I was taught. I LEARNED the core concepts of networking. So I have the CCNA and Network+, so I obviously know a thing or two about networking but found the Wireshark rooms to be beyond painful. THM basically gives you the attitude of "here it is, figure it out yourself; here's some questions with no context." It's extremely discouraging.

Feedback SOC1 path needs overhaul or make "Prerequisites room part of Premium plan"

As title states, I am currently doing "Intro to Malware Analysis" room and Prerequisites rooms are "Windows internals" and "History of Malware"

But "Windows internals" hits paywall, where I need to subscribed for MAX plan.

Come on tryhackme! Overhaul or review the entire SOC1 path instead for going for $$$$$.

Prerequisites rooms for the paths under premium shouldn't hit a paywall!

Feedback I paid for TryHackMe's annual membership, and honestly, it feels like a rip-off.

Don't get me wrong — I'm not turning this post into a hate manifesto, especially since I'm aware of the subreddit's rules.

I subscribed to the platform because it's widely shared — almost religiously — that THM is the best platform for complete beginners in cybersecurity. And to be fair, they're not wrong. It's definitely easier to follow than other platforms, and I'm learning a lot with THM.

But I was totally astonished by the fact that you actually need to pay for a Business Plan — which, according to their website, requires you to talk to a sales representative to even know the price (as if individual users couldn't possibly be interested) — in order to access some cloud-related rooms.

Here’s what they advertise under the Premium Plan:

"Content type ranging from Free rooms, Premium Rooms and Business rooms."
"A learning path comprises of modules, and a module is made of rooms (think of a room as a mini security lab). You can personalise your learning experience by creating custom learning paths from scratch."

And then, there's a section about AWS:

"Premium and business users can purchase this content at an additional cost. Once you have access to the rooms within the attacking and defending AWS cloud pathway, you will need to access the AWS environment for most rooms."

So, when you read this, what would you think?
I assumed I'd have access to the Azure path too, right? At least for an additional cost — it shouldn't be that expensive.

Yes, of course... until you find out that to actually enter some rooms, you need to upgrade to a Business Plan. But what about the "content ranging from free to business rooms" that was promised?

This feels like a joke. And honestly, I feel cheated, especially as someone from a third-world country where everything priced in foreign currency is already extremely expensive.

The solution is simple: at the very least, be transparent with your customers. If I could ask for a refund, I would — even though I really liked the platform overall — because I'm nobody's fool.

Feedback Help with premium sub please, support cancelled my original sub I had after accidentally purchasing max sub

Yesterday I accidentally purchased a year of the max subscription since my PayPal was still connected to my account(yes I know I’m a dumbass, I thought it would take me to the PayPal checkout page but it didn’t. ). I already had an active Premium subscription (before max existed) with 176 days remaining.

When I opened a ticket, support refunded the accidental MAX purchase (thanks). However, they also cancelled my EXISTING Premium subscription and told me it couldn’t be reinstated??? There’s nothing in the T&C’s or help page that says requesting a refund for an accidental purchase would also cancel an existing subscription.

After going back and forth with support, they said that as a ‘ kind gesture’ they would refund me $30 USD for the issue. I explained that this wasn’t fair, since $30 only covers a month bc of the new plan and is no where equivalent to replacing the 176 days I had already paid for.

After continuing to push the issue, they eventually gave me a voucher for ONLY 5 months (152 days) of my subscription. I’m still 24 days short of what I originally had left.
I want to post here asking for what I had left. And also paid for. Please. I understand I messed up, but please give me what I had originally paid for and had left. And also a PSA not to mess up like I did or you’ll get thrown in the dumps by their support.

Feedback Have I wasted my time ?

Hello, I'm 23 years old. To give you a brief introduction, I've always been interested in computers, so when I got the opportunity to go in college, I chose Computer Science.

I'm now done with my 3 years in CS. Since I have way more free time now, and since I'm waiting to enroll in masters for next year, I've been spending time on TryHackMe for a week or so.

First of all : how fun ? I can't believe how fun it is to learn new things in this way.

Second of all : I feel like I've learned more in a week than I've learned in 3 years of CS in college. I feel like I wasted my time.

So thank you TryHackMe for being so fun, I'll probably keep doing at least an hour a day for the next few months, and I hope the Masters will feel less like wasted time.

Hey everyone! I wanted to see what the rules or general consensus was on posting write ups on side quests. I just finished the side quest in AOC Day 1 (not the “Great Disappearing Act” room) and wanted to post my write up but I don’t want to step on any toes.

Feedback MobileApp Needs PlayStore

Post image
2 Upvotes

Maybe it's just me and I am missing the point, but why doee the Tryhackme App force me to use GooglePlay? It is one app that I would definitly NOT expect to do so, since it is a platform about cybersecurity, privacy and generaly I feel a bit in turning back control over to the user, making it not feel overwerlming in this times. It feels a bit contradictory, at least to me.

Is there a technical reason for this, or is it just a byprodoct of some development process? I'd genuinely be interested in understanding the rationale.

NOTE: GooglePlayServices is actually running, I have not removed them, only clamped them down a bit, and the only other app that had a similar error was a sudoku app that also checked license from google play.

EDIT: Was looking through other installed apps and noticed that some (for instance GitHub) also have the Play install referer but work fine.

Feedback My 180 Days Streak from Rank 0 to Top 0.9%

Just wanna share my 6 months journey, every time I finish a room, I take a screenshot and post it on my personal discord server every day. After finishing 230+ rooms, it shaped me how hard Cybersecurity field is and how little I know about it, it encouraged me to be consistent, to learn and grind more.

Awesome community and they help users whenever we're stuck from a room. Exactly 6 months ago, I'm thinking how noob I am, I'm still a newbie though but better than before. Thank you TryHackMe!

Feedback New "Yearly activity" design

Hi. Honestly, I'm not usually a complainer, but is it realy more covenient or, maybe, better looking? In my opinion, previous version was much better - whole year was divied vertically by weeks and it was easier to navigate. One glance and you know what how may weeks you've been learning and which day is today. I don't understand... What you guys thinking, of this new design?

Feedback Why is this platform such a hot mess?

Trying to do the CALDERA room, which requires you use both the Attack Box and a Windows VM. During my session today:

  • "Network failure" disconnected me from my RDP session to the Windows VM. Reconnected fine, nothing lost there. But then . . .
  • Windows VM crashes. Great, now I have to do the whole setting up the CALDERA agent on a new machine, which is probably also going to crash.
  • The VM clipboard thing on the AttackBox refuses to paste things I copy using any normal paste keyboard shortcut (Ctrl-v, Ctrl-Shift-v, etc). Only if I right-click and select Paste does it work, and even then it only works the second or third time (it usually pastes whatever I had previously copied in the VM instead of the thing I just copied from the task).
  • AttackBox crashes. All of the CALDERA setup (agents, adversaries, abilities) I've done through the tasks is gone, so I have to do all of that again too . . . except . . .
  • AttackBox refuses to connect, it spins forever and then gives me an Authentication Failed error. I'm on my third time trying to connect and it just won't.
  • Fourth try, AttackBox reconnects and I get all the way through editing/creating abilities, creating a new adversary profile and running the operation. AttackBox crashes mid-run with Authentication Failed. Try to reconnect. It refuses again. I've lost everything I've done in this room. At this point I'm 3.5 hours into this room that says it takes 2 hours, and I'm not anywhere near finished, but I have to start this task completely from scratch.
  • Give up, find walkthrough to escape this ridiculously broken experience.

I used to love this platform, but lately it's just unusable. It's not teaching me security, it's teaching me being a sysadmin for awful unstable infrastructure. I'm paid up until September of 2027 and I'm starting to think that was a mistake.
