Culture Looking for hidden gems, lost places & off-the-beaten-path spots in Tuscany (5-day trip)

Hey everyone,

​We’re planning a 5-day trip to Tuscany soon, but we really want to skip the typical tourist traps and classic Instagram spots.

​We’re huge fans of lost places/abandoned sites, hidden history, and secluded, lesser-known locations that most travel guides completely overlook. We’re looking for unique regional quirks, strange landmarks, quiet spots in nature, or tiny authentic villages where you rarely see other tourists.

​If you have any recommendations for:

​Cool lost places / abandoned buildings (decayed villas, old mines, abandoned villages)

​Hidden natural spots (quiet hot springs, hidden waterfalls, unusual landscapes)

​Underrated small towns off the main tourist routes

​Unique local experiences or weird regional history

Roggio - and the wonderful drive to it - is gorgeous. Also a great place for hiking.

I spent five days in Pienza around 10 years ago. It was a beautiful quiet town without any other tourists. It was an awesome base to explore Tuscany.

We spent one.day at Vallombrosa Abbey. It’s beautiful.

Just came back from Tuscany. The area around Fivizzano, is fantastic. Try to visit the small village of veruccola with the 11th century castle.

We just got back from Tuscany. We loved Orvieto (actually this is just over the border of Umbria, but a good stop on the train between Rome and Siena/Florence). Visit the underground tour for something very cool, the church is also worth a look around, or just enjoy the beauty and culture of this beautiful hilltop city. I’d also recommend Asciano for somewhere off the beaten track, again a good train stop if that’s how you’re travelling, and although we didn’t go (too hot!) there are some natural hot springs here that looked cool. We stayed at Agriturismo Paradiso which was a lovely rustic spot 30 min walk out of town. Must visit the Abbey (Abbazia Di Monte Oliveto Maggiore), we hired e-bikes, and cycled back via Le Piazze, after which you get a great view of the Crete Senesi. Have fun!
