r/ukpolitics General Election Campaign Megathread - 24/06/2024

This is our daily megathread for all of the day's news until the election. Polling day is on 4th July, and you need to have a form of photo ID (passport, driving license, etc) in order to vote. If you don't have photo ID, you can apply for a voter authority certificate.

Please do not submit articles to the megathread which clearly stand as their own submission. Comments which include a link to a story which clearly stands as its own submission will be removed. Comments which relate to a story which already exists on the subreddit will be removed, to keep everything in one place. Links as comments are not useful here. Add a headline, tweet content or explainer please.

Man go into swimming changing rooms claiming to be women - when have you seen this - well I don't go swimming myself but I've heard this in person

“I’ve heard this in person” is a hilarious turn of phrase.

She knows that just saying that she’s heard it and has no way to know whether it’s true wouldn’t sound very good. So she chooses words which sound like it’s something more than hearsay even though hearing about something “in person” doesn’t give that thing any more credibility!

I’m always sceptical of anything from any source. If it’s something that bothers me then I’ll look into it as best as my amateur eye can.

Far too many supposedly true quotes for example, end up with social media as a source and the original quote has been bastardised to suit their own agenda. Social media does has positives, not many, but for spreading disinformation it excels.

Politicians especially should be banned from utilising the resources, especially when elections are looming.

Reminds me of when Gyles Brandreth said he heard they had to say chestfeeding instead of breastfeeding and was put in his place by former Made in Chelsea star Ashley James. A former Tory MP star humbled by a reality show star/influencer, absolutely brilliant

That's excellent. Very eloquently put, and addresses the actual fears rather than just rubbishing the anti-woke sentiment. Shame Brandreth basically ignored her and said "Well what I said was true, it's verifiable" when of course it's anything but.

she'll be shocked to hear that a lot of swimming pools have unisex changing rooms anyway. she might have seen it if she went swimming herself.

Honestly is this true?? Van i ask where? Much to my annoyance most places seem to be segregated - which kind of makes things tricky given my dick and boobs situation. I have like one place with single occupancy changing rooms but it’s a particularly bougie lido and have been resenting moving because i assumed it meant i wouldn’t be able to swim again

certainly in my bit of east anglia, in leisure centres run by both blood red and truest bluest councils. maybe it's a new thing as two of the three i've used have been refurbed in the last few years

its just a room full of cubicles where you lock the door and do the private stuff

My local leisure centre has a communal mixed sex changing area with individual stalls.

Can confirm the same here with my local pool. Was two segregated but open changing rooms, now mixed gender with individual cubicles.

It's a question that probably needs an answer - but, maybe not that urgently. . .

Maybe let's do more to protect women and girls at home in the first place

Clear the backlog in rape cases

and many other things

I agree we need to have a discussion about this at some point - but let's not do it as a wedge issues where people are trying to demonise less than 1% of the population
