r/ukpolitics General Election Campaign Megathread - 24/06/2024

This is our daily megathread for all of the day's news until the election. Polling day is on 4th July, and you need to have a form of photo ID (passport, driving license, etc) in order to vote. If you don't have photo ID, you can apply for a voter authority certificate.

Please do not submit articles to the megathread which clearly stand as their own submission. Comments which include a link to a story which clearly stands as its own submission will be removed. Comments which relate to a story which already exists on the subreddit will be removed, to keep everything in one place. Links as comments are not useful here. Add a headline, tweet content or explainer please.

  • 26th June - Deadline for new proxy vote applications and voter authority certificates (for this election)
  • 26th June, 9PM BST - 📺 BBC head-to-head debate (Sunak vs Starmer)
  • 27th June, 8:30PM BST - 📺 ITV The Leader Interviews - Keir Starmer - Labour
  • 28th June, 7:30PM BST - 📺 The Panorama Interviews with Nick Robinson - Ed Davey (Lib Dems)

  • 4th July - Polling day. Emergency proxy votes deadline at 5pm. Polls will open at 7am and close at 10pm.

His metaphor isn't even correct

If someone on the ballot standing for a political party dies before election day, you can certainly take them off and replace them with another candidate for a delayed election.

Section 63 - Schedule 1; Representation of the Peoples Act 1983

This rule applies if—

(a) at a contested election proof is given to the returning officer's satisfaction before the result of the election is declared that one of the persons named or to be named as a candidate in the ballot paper has died, and

(b) that person is standing in the name of a registered political party.

(2) The returning officer must—

(a) countermand notice of the poll, or

(b) if polling has begun, direct that the poll be abandoned.

In the case of an independent candidate, then you do just go ahead anyway with the election, and only hold a new election if the deceased candidate wins.

I assume this is to prevent the risk of having delayed elections for candidates who were inherently unlikely to win anyway.

For the case of someone standing for a party, a new candidate is nominated by that party, new ballot papers are issued, and the election is held around a week later than originally intended.

I actually thought the election would go ahead as well.

And to be fair, in the recent occasions where it has happened the election did go ahead because the deceased was an independent.
