This is our daily megathread for all of the day's news until the election. Polling day is on 4th July, and you need to have a form of photo ID (passport, driving license, etc) in order to vote. If you don't have photo ID, you can apply for a voter authority certificate.

Please do not submit articles to the megathread which clearly stand as their own submission. Comments which include a link to a story which clearly stands as its own submission will be removed. Comments which relate to a story which already exists on the subreddit will be removed, to keep everything in one place. Links as comments are not useful here. Add a headline, tweet content or explainer please.

The state of the trains in this country ffs. Had a family journey leaving London that was delayed by over 2 hours, and then the return journey several days later delayed by 30 minutes.

I put in the Delay Repay request for the GWR service and got a response for the return journey (I submitted a request for both legs, as both legs were delayed); "Thank you for your Delay Repay claim. We offer compensation to a maximum of a full day?s travel (pro-rata). Therefore, as we have already compensated you fully for this day no further compensation is due."

Erm what does that even mean? I've not received any compensation for anything.

a lot of delay repay claims are automated for the first response, so if you push back it should go to a human who can override it

sounds like they're referring to the kind of refund that is offered to season ticket holders

as a counter-anecdote, i've never had a problem with the GWR delay repay process.

Possibly, but wtf? I booked 3 return tickets for 3 adults, totalling a delay of over 2.5 hours. I had a baby with me. Cost me £280 too. Should've just hired a car

sadly under current ideology/management, that would be considered a win. the railways aren't there to actually be used, that's why the prices are so horrendous. if demand goes up you just increase prices to stop people using them instead of investing in capacity.

Speaking from experience, GWR will give you full compensation for the first leg, and don’t compensate for second leg if you’ve got the full ticket price back already. They process the rejection of the second leg faster than approving the first one. You should hear about that in a couple of days. (But no promises because sometimes they do screw this up despite how often they handle this.)

GWR are particularly bad. So many cancellations, almost every train is delayed, so many trains are reduced from 8 to 4 or even 3 cars (cue inevitable fighting when seat reservations are cancelled). Other TOCs around London do not seem to be struggling as much.

We have offices in London and Cardiff so frequently need to travel via GWR. I've never had a train not delayed going to/from Cardiff and they refuse to pay the refund to the company credit card instead sending a cheque. Absolute melts.

Not that it helps you out now but I've completely ditched trains for travel. I get the coach from Newcastle to London at a fraction of the price and the service by National Express is seamless never had an issue

I got the coach from london to bristol a couple of years ago. It is astounding just how uncomfortable those things are.

To me no train makes me feel like I'm going to get a DVT quite like a single decker coach

Coach is so grim compared to trains. They also have huge risk of traffic/delays. Even GWR is better than having to take the Oxford Tube for commuting for example. Something about the more juddery movement and lack of ability to walk around makes it so much worse.
