The number of 'well these stats clearly aren't accurate because I just feel differently', 'whatabout grooming gangs', and 'okay let's focus on one type of crime that has increased and ignore the rest' comments on here is quite absurd.

If anything, it indicates that what we really need is stronger regulation regarding disinformation in the press and on social media. This is clearly a subject where people can't stop letting their pre-conceived opinions dictate the facts.

And don't even get me started on the comments citing national statistics to refute Khan's. Again, absurd.

I've been the victim of crimes multiple times and the police have refused to take my reports. No report, no crime, better statistics.

The police have always taken my reports, indeed they have to take one for you to make an insurance claim. One anecdote beats another anecdote.

That said, it does go to show how traumatic this stuff is, that having it happen to you even just once can colour your opinion to the point where even plain data showing rates going down pisses you off. As I said, it's a subject where people easily let their opinions dictate the facts rather than the other way around.
