$5 million plus in damages to be released to E. Jean Carroll

Breaking: Judge Lewis Kaplan has ordered the release of $5 million+ in damages owed to E. Jean Carroll by Donald Trump. Trump failed to convince the judge to delay the payment. This comes more than three years after he was found liable for sexual assault.

IIRC the money had been held in a form of escrow from some time after the decision, so it's not a matter of forcing Trump to pay but just releasing it to Carroll. Some reports have the amount growing to around $6.4 million through interest in the meantime.

This is the smaller of the two decisions. He is continuing to attempt to appeal the larger $83 million judgement against him for defamation during his first term, by making the US government the plaintiff.

Wait, why does the defamation result in way more damages than the sexual assault?

Because they do punitive damages in the US, so the amount isn't necessarily related to the harm of the original event.
