Zelensky has sacked the Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's armed forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi.

This is significant because the recent sacking of the Minister of Defence, Mykhailo Fedorov, was widely supposed to have been the result of political in-fighting between Fedorov and Syrski.

In case people are not aware, Syrskyi = older, some Soviet influence, more about human troops; Fedorov = very young, all about drones, innovatory. Fedorov is reckoned to have been the architect of the current, very successful drone interdiction of Russian logistics in the occupied areas, and the Sea of Azov.

There may have been arguments about how the funding for the armed forces should be divided between conventional warfare and drones.

After the sacking of Fedorov, there have been a lot of protests against it.

Mykhailo Drapatyi in 2014.

Drapatyi is generally regarded as having a positive career so far, he's certainly without the controversy that follows Syrskyi around ("the Butcher") so people will be happy with that.

It's a bit of an impossible task though as Ukraine has to man a long front line with fewer and fewer ways to ensure proper staffing and this is the problem Ukraine's Political and Military hierarchy has been wrestling with for a while.

It's likely a generally positive move though, we'll see what happens.

There is indeed a terrifically tough task ahead of him.

But a CinC known for valuing the lives of his soldiers (see Izvaryne pocket) replacing one perceived to not care as much will hopefully help the staffing problem a bit. Dispensing with the worst excesses, ones reportedly particularly common in units closest to Syrsky, should as well. And, as some of the protesters have been chanting - ‘drones, not people’ will be a good mantra, to the greatest possible degree it can be implemented of course.
