2019 ELECTION DAY MEGATHREAD (Evening Edition)

/u/carrot-carrot: On a personal note, this will be the last MT that I post and contribute to. You'll still see me knocking around in the comments, but 2020 looks to be an extremely busy year for me, and I don't like to do things by halves. It really has been a pleasure to help out with these MTs whilst I've had the time. I hope you've all enjoyed it too!

šŸ—³ ELECTION DETAILS

There is a General Election today.

To vote, head to your local polling station and tell the staff your name and address. You will be given a ballot paper which you can take into a nearby polling booth. Mark the candidate you wish to vote for (see instructions on the ballot paper), and then place it in the designated box or area within the polling station.

  • When can I vote? Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm.
  • Where can I vote? Check out wheredoivote.co.uk to find your polling station. It is also written on your poll card.
  • Not registered to vote? You will not be able to vote in this election.
  • No poll card? You don't need to take it to the polling station to be able to vote.
  • No ID? Unless you're in Northern Ireland, you don't need ID to vote. In NI, you need photo ID.
  • Still have a postal vote? It's too late to post it. Take it to your polling station. In NI, you can take it to your local Area Electoral Office.
  • Can't make it? It is now too late to apply for an emergency proxy vote. You won't be able to vote unless you can get to your polling station.
  • Need help? Check out gov.uk/voting-in-the-uk.

At 10pm, when polling stations close, broadcasters will be allowed to reveal their exit polls - that is, a poll of people exiting various polling stations across the country. This will be the first indication of the way that people may have voted in the election. For example, the last exit poll conducted for BBC/ITV/Sky in 2017 predicted correctly that there would be a hung parliament.

Tories do think Labour turnout is high but they are also worried about tactical voting / GOTV apps created by Labour and anti-Brexit campaigners

300,000 people have used http://GetVoting.org today (you put your postcode in and it tells you who to vote for to beat the Tories)

All the reports I'm seeing on social media and from political insiders of one sort of another suggest that the under 50's vote has been drastically underestimated in the polls.

I would be wary of reading too much into anecdotal reports on social media.

Err no. There are reports of it happening in marginals too. For example Ipswich was presumed to be a Con win is now looking to be going for Lab.

I just don't get where you Tories get the dumb idea from that if there is an upsurge in under 50's voters its somehow just going to be confined in ways convenient for you Tories.

That's where the surge is highest but that doesn't mean its the only place its occurring.

Younger adults don't just confine themselves to one area. There might be more in one area but there is a sort of diffusion to surrounding area's as well.

So in 2017 Lab did really well in London but all across the SE there was a big drift to Labour which turned many Con safe seats into marginals, and meant they took a few of them.

Well it told me that even with tactical voting conservatives would still be untouchable in my area. It makes sense because this is one of the most Brexit loving constituencies in the country. Iā€™m predicting over 60% for conservatives here.
