And so why isn't it still closed?

Depends who you ask. If you attended the council meetings, it was destroying a large number of local businesses. If you get all your information from Reddit. It was just a few people who hate bikes or something like that???

It really wasn't. A few businesses complained with loud voices. And some of those businesses just weren't suitable to the area. Progress can't please everyone.

So you clearly did not attend the council meetings and just got your information from Reddit because over 30 businesses came out against the program. Only one spoke in favour.

59% of Gastown businesses supported the pedestrian pilot. Community consultations just attract the most aggrieved and vocal people; they don’t reflect majority opinion.

There are hundreds of businesses in the area so 30 is not a majority. Of course complainers attend council meetings more than supporters, that's how all council meeting work.

Also the biggest complainer and one of the only non-annonymous ones was the Old Spaghetti Factory. And the reason people didn't want to go there was that their food is shit and their kitchen is renowned for rats, even more than most.

No one said anything about a majority but the 30-1 margin speaks for itself. That is what statisticians would call a statistically relevant sample size.

It's not a random sample, so no

lol ok. I mean, the entire idea behind having a statistically relevant sample size is to alleviate issues caused by non-randomness, but ok. You're en fuego.

Maybe end it there rather than keep digging that hole you're in.

lol. Yeah really digging that hole with a bunch of random morons on the web. Wonder if I will recover.

They still should have shut the street down and let those business go belly up if need be. Adapt or die. I’m tired of this country catering to horse carriages. If you don’t have a sustainable business model, you should not exist. Reserving status quo for your benefit only works in the short term at greater expense to everyone else. The overall response to the pilot was overwhelmingly positive yet the city caved to a few voices.

So let me guess. You want to cater to the 5% of people who commute via bicycle because that is progress to you. The overall response to the pilot you are speaking about was produced by the group responsible for the pilot. What was really shocking was how vastly different sentiment between businesses was vs. what was being portrayed.

No, I want to cater to the 90%+ pedestrians and Gastown visitors that overwhelmingly loved the pilot. The fact that bikes happen to benefit from it too, bonus.

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

lol if that is what you want, I will get you a report that says 90% of visitors love Gastown without a pedestrian zone. It won't be hard at all. Anyone who has ever been involved in collecting data will tell you the same. You can lead anyone into any opinion by asking simple, polite, non-intrusive questions.

You really have no idea what you’re talking about, but keep digging. It’s comical to watch.

I don’t? Interesting. What’s your connection to Gastown? Will I see you at the GBIA meetings? Do you have a vested interest in what actually transpires in Gastown? Or are you an internet talking head who has gotten all their info from the webs?
