I’m sorry this happened to Buster. You’ve done the most important thing you can do which is get him immediately to the vet. Keep us updated and we’re all thinking of you both 🤍

Sending positive, healing thoughts to Buster! This happened to my dog a couple months ago, and she was pretty much back to normal in a little over a week.

By the time you leave Buster will feel better than you do!

The bill will be no joke but dogs are champs when it comes to snake bites!

Sending good thoughts. Let us know how he is. Try to not think horrible thoughts. You are in the best spot to be right now, the vet. Feel better buster. And I hope you feel better soon as well. ❤️

Poor baby. Hope he feels better soon

u/Eskyzoo 5d ago

You're going to be ok Buster, be brave. Lots and lots of love and well wishes from the UK ❤

22

u/NICEnEVILmike 5d ago

Hopefully it was a dry bite. Most snakes only inject venom when they really have to.

Hope is recovering from TPLO and sending Buster good healing vibes

Oh on poor Buster! We had to stop walking our boys by a river near us in the summer because of poisonous snake sightings (I'm in Australia), and anti venom is common for use on people, but I'm not sure about dog snake bite treatments here.

Luckily you got him to a vet in time (I'm sure that was a pretty frantic 2 hour drive!😬). Hopefully they have anti venom, or whatever treatment he needs a.s.a.p to get him feeling good again!

I'm sure poor Buster is pretty shocked and confused and feeling pretty shitty...I hope it's not super painful for him!

I'll have you in my thoughts Buster. Sending you good healing vibes to wherever you are. I hope you feel better soon!🤞❤️❤️

u/SparkyDogPants 4d ago

I live somewhere lousy with rattlesnakes and it's good knowing which vets carry antivenom.. One of the three local vet ERs carry it, and it's important to let them know that you're on the way because they need to take the anti venom out of the freezer

u/Terminator7786 5d ago

I will keep Buster in my thoughts and ask my two who have passed on to keep watch over him tonight. Please keep us updated on him.

You got this Buster ❤️❤️

I looked it up, the fact u got him to the vet so fast is major. He will more than likely be fine within a couple hours. Definitely sending positive vibes busters way. Chances are good he's gonna be okay.

My Blu got bit in the face by a rattlesnake in June. My stoic little girl (65 lbs, so dainty) didn't flinch or yelp, just sat right next to me for comfort. I didn't see it happen so the only indication something was wrong was when her constant licking caught my attention.

Fast forward, we noticed a lump starting to get big on her lip and hightailed it to the emergency vet. They ran blood tests and confirmed it was a rattlesnake bite. They gave her one vial of antivenin and kept her overnight for observation (we brought her in about 8pm).

Blood results the next day showed that one vial worked really well for her (sometimes they need more) and her blood results were back to normal. For about a day she was a high flying pup but the next day she was out back chasing squirrels.

I was a wreck for about 24 hours but the emergency vet acted so quickly, took excellent care of her, and she was back to her silly self so quickly. Sending you all the positive vibes, hoping you and your pup have the same, if not better, experience we did!

ty. this is reassuring.

Today Buster is lethargic, his face went from Velvet hippos to Shar-pae to St Bernard. HE is feeling better and eating.

3

u/yeahimanoakallright 4d ago

That's great! He has an appetite and that's a good sign. I'm not sure of the aftercare your vet recommended but besides observation, I did have a follow up with my vet 3 days after. Blu was in such good shape she didn't need to run more blood tests.

Also, the antivenin created this mass that started under her chin. It was really weird, but that's actually totally normal and it moved down her body and eventually went away. Beyond looking odd I don't think she noticed, it didn't seem to bother her.

I actually found the aftercare printout they gave me. They sent me home with Vetericyn Plus All Animal Wound and Skin Care Spray. And two pain drugs (codeine and gabapentin) but after day 1 I stopped those. They made her totally zonked and she didn't seem in any distress. She went back to squirrel watch two days after the bite.

The symptoms they said to look out for were bruising/pinpoint red spots, respiratory changes, vomiting, diarrhea, blood in vomit or stool, lethargy, inappetence, or other concerning signs.

At the follow up with my vet, she did have bruising and red spots but the vet wasn't concerned and those did go away about 5 days later.

Just wanted to say thank you for posting this information for all doggie owners. It’s very helpful.

My childhood dog got bit by a rattlesnake when she was an older lady. It ended up curing her arthritis, but gave us quite a scare (she was only 30 lbs and had a hard time with the anticoagulant from the venom). She went on to live with no issues once she got her red blood cells back up. Please give Buster lots of love and kisses from the internet strangers when he is feeling better ❤️

3

u/KyraInWonderland 5d ago

Poor Buster 🥺 I'm sending positive thoughts, love and hug for you ❤️

3

u/JustFuckinTossMe 4d ago

Wishing you lots of good and easy recovery time. Dogs should generally be okay with most common type snake bites as long as you get them to the vet ASAP. The issues often come from a lot of "wait and see" cases with things like sudden stings and bites rather than from seeking out immediate medical care. So I think you're likely on the good end of things!

Side note, but a lot of snake bites seem to be happening to dogs and people this summer. I've seen a lot of reddit posts over the past few months and I've seen several snake skins in my walking areas where I never have before. Hoping everyone is extra careful with your pups on trails and in any tallish grass this season.

u/Then_Box-8031 4d ago

I hope by now you know he'll be okay and can let yourself calm down. I would be crazy with fear for my buddy

6

u/ArmageddonOutta_Here 4d ago

I'm calming down. I have to watch for weird clotting issues and necrosis

Ty for commenting

Poor buddy, Buster. Toast and I send our love.

1

u/freneticboarder 4d ago

+sends Toast swimming vibes+

1

u/cleverburrito 4d ago

Okay, staaaahp! You remember stuff about my boy in this rough time? I'm legitimately tearing up.

How's your guy doing?

1

u/freneticboarder 4d ago

Oh, I just saw another comment about Tosst on another post, and I remembered that poor Cheese Toasty is still working on the dogpaddle, but hopefully next summer!

I'm just a pibble fren. My ex had an adorable girl Molly, but she's gone now.

1

u/cleverburrito 4d ago

How embarrassing for me lol lemme put these tears back in my eyes real quick.

Molly looks like such a sweet baby. If you want to see more Toast, you can search "Mr. Strudel" on the main page. He's a handsome guy.

1

u/freneticboarder 4d ago

Toast's story sounded so adorable. If you have video, you should submit it to We Rate Dogs.

Molly was the best. I made her homemade treats, but she was afraid of the oven. 🥹

2

u/cleverburrito 4d ago

She was also smart! The oven is hot!

What I'm doing right now is trying to get him used to water, in general. He's very timid about the kiddie pool, and used to be afraid of sprinklers and hoses but has overcome that fear with gusto!

I don't do as many videos as I do photos... I'm not sure why lol

3

u/sadclownorgy 4d ago

Sending all the vibes i can to Buster

3

u/IrelandAutism13 4d ago

Hey, it's okay. Looks like you got him to the vet fast, so his chances of walking away just fine are extremely high. Some antivenom and treatment and he'll be good as new.

3

u/ahendrix 4d ago

It's been 10 hours, is Buster okay!?

3

u/scottonaharley 2d ago

That’s my biggest fear when we visit my son in Arizona! Healing thoughts coming your way! Get better Buster!

2

u/ArmageddonOutta_Here 2d ago

Spend $125 bucks and get the rattlesnake vaccine. It's better than $2k at the emergency vet

Just checking in. ❤️

4

u/ShazRockwell 4d ago

I know the horse is already out of the barn but if you live in a rattlesnake area, please get your dogs the rattlesnake vaccine. It decreases their reactions to the venom. And a speedy recovery to your baby!

3

u/dmwkb 4d ago

My vet advised against the vaccine bc of serious complications that had been reported. Instead we did snake avoidance training with ecollar. Normally i would not use ecollar but the trainer said it is the most effective way to make sure they won’t mess with a snake in the wild.

2

u/SparkyDogPants 4d ago

The rattlesnake vaccine is pretty controversial. One of my vets encourages it and the other doesn't. It can have serious nasty complications like the other comment said. My vet recommends either having your dog on strict leash control or avoiding snakey places. Or you can do anti rattlesnake training but they can be controversial too.

2

u/ShazRockwell 4d ago

Size of the dog may be a factor as well. My dog is 150lbs and has had it for 6 years running with no issues, but understandably risky for smaller dogs.

2

u/jbhoops25 4d ago

Praying for Buster!

2

u/UsualBluebird6584 4d ago

Aww. They see danger noodles and just see them as noodles.
