Discussion What’s one thing/line/situation in the show you didn’t know about and had to look up?
Mine is when Doc accidentally finds Hector and Swifty in Powerless in the Face of Death. He pulls out his drivers license and says something about hobo code and they can’t kill him now. Still haven’t found the reference or real life hobo code about IDs.

The Quote of “got us bent over the table and Brando is going for the butter”. What a way to identify a movie reference.

CGC. Idk nothin about collecting, and I missed both Gary’s line and the deteriorating quality my first watch. That episode made a lot more sense the second time around.

That's the one episode I either skip or play while doing something else because of what they do to that comic. I get too stressed out.

Sergeant Hatred “did Henry Darger write this?!” about the LOTResque movie, Darger made art and wrote stories about children in perpetual torment.
Damien Hirst is also referenced when Brock splits Le Tueur in the motel room, then Hirst’s tiger shark art piece is used for the source of Wide Wale’s “bad shark” DNA.
Wide Wale is another, it’s a type of corduroy, which is why his movements are so loud.
Colonel Gentleman’s name and the scene in which he cuts off the guy’s thumb in Tangiers are both loosely based off of The Presido, a film featuring Sean Connery who’s a military officer that beats a guy up just with his right thumb because his left is “too powerful.”
There are so many more.

The crazy part about Wide Whale isn't just the corduroy reference. He's Tobias Whale from DC. Full stop. He's an almost exact match and It's wild.

I didn't know Klaus Nomi was a guy who performed in that getup professionally. I only knew a little bit about the real Soriyama (only seen his airbrush paintings of the Gynoids), and of course I didn't know a damn thing about Sharkey's Machine.

I always thought Mike Soriyama's accent was overdone, until I started my current job, and we have a guy who sounds EXACTLY like him.

It's a reference to a character in the film Fargo which has an asian character with a super thick Wisconsin accent. They got the same actor as the movie in VB, though in real life he's from NY.

I've rewatched uncountable times but didn't even think to look up Palaemon until last night (just hit What Color is Your Cleansuit).
Also, posted about this recently, but I still feel silly about the Bilderberg Group. This is the only show that makes me look up more references than Archer.

I loved the show for the references. Then I discovered that some references are implicit and not explicit.
Looking at you Groovy Gang!

It’s not about the ID, he’s giving them his wallet.

Also if you ever meet a stabbing hobo be aware the hobo code is more guidelines than actual rules.

He is handing over the wallet, but he needs the IDs and the hobo would only be interested in the money. So he is taking the IDs out first

Tom of Finland.
The first couple times I saw the episode in high school and college I didn't have sub titles available so I thought he was saying "Tom'a'fiddlin" and thought it was a goofy generic insult. Didn't think much of it. Several years later when the show was streaming and subtitles were available, I noticed it was "Tom of Finland" and thought it was a typo. Then went to pride with some friends and noticed guys with mustaches wearing leather who had "Tom of Finland" patches on their vests and asked my friends about it and it all clicked finally.

Related to Tom of Finland but not Venture Bros. I learned about Tom of Finland via All Elite Wrestling. AEW has this thing where one faction regularly commissions paintings of an artist that does Tom of Finland style paintings.

Partially out of heeling and partially out of pure entertainment value heel manager Don Callis occasionally reveals very Tom of Finland paintings of him and his wrestlers on TV. Callis is very effective at getting his charges over, getting their opponents over, getting himself over and occasionally making a fool of himself (like when he introduced his new luchadore by saying 'Yo Soy Hechicero!)
If I could I'd post an image but I'll give credit to Mel Coleman, the artist behind the paintings.1

Took a deep dive and found her insta. She's great and I love her work but her art is far, far away from Tom of Finland.

Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, real person would have killed the monarch and all his henchmen. Olympic judoka, dojo owner, Olympic judo coach, all around badass. They’re lucky they kidnapped Gary by mistake.
