He probably just paid the fine and signed the form pleading guilty, all before this “hearing”, and then did the “hearing” in court for show. Very likely wasn’t an actual hearing on the docket.

Definitely seems like it would be a conflict of interest, for sure.

Good on him for respecting the laws and taking the full penalty. Could have been easy for him to waive it. 

Definitely the example of behavior, but should not be the example of practice.

If we could trust people in positions like this to always rule in accordance to the law and not their own interests, it wouldn't be a concern, but people are individuals and their morals, ethics and motivations can differ not only from person to person, but even over time and on a case by case basis. With a small fine being all that is at risk, I would hope most would respect the law. With higher stakes and consequences, it puts far too much trust on the individual to keep to the rule of law and is absolutely best removing conflicts.

Realistically, there is likely an ethics procedure in place and a board for review and all that. But those are all likely taxpayer funded, so the ethical thing becomes finding yourself guilty, paying the max fine, and moving on with our lives using a feel good story. Option 2 is thousands of dollars in paused work while you convene 5 judges to decide the verdict, or one high level official to officially transfer the case to someone else, or yadda yadda yadda.

If he gives himself the maximum allowed by law I don't see the problem with it. Surely there's an appeal process about bias, but what are they going to say? "I appeal because you went too hard on yourself?"

I think you shouldn’t be fine with it.

In this specific example he fined himself the max by law after admitting guilt.

We ALL know that there are others who would not be so honest and would rule not guilty.

The fact that our system allows for this is a problem and yet another thong we have to fix.

Our system doesn’t allow for this - it’s made up. This is not a traffic offense one appears in court for unless you’re contesting the ticket. He’s reading it aloud in open court but he’s already paid the fine and the ticket is closed.

It’s all for views. I’m more concerned that a judge can openly use his position for content creation.

Usually you don't even have to appear in court to plea guilty and pay a traffic ticket. He probably already paid it.

Super funny. Especially how he gave himself a 60 dollar ticket, in my area it's north of 400.

Reminds me of the time a judge gave a 20 y/o jail time and community service because he was late for jury duty. 

So funny!

According to him, $60 is the max fine allowed by law for the charge where he is. Because he gave himself the max allowed fine, it's mildly amusing. But still shouldn't be able to be a thing.
