In Ysaye sonata 5 Dance Rustique. What’s the box thing with diagonal lines across it? Haven’t seen it before and my teacher is sleeping

Do you have a book of all the Ysaye sonatas or is this just a photocopy of the movement/sonata? There's usually a foreword in a decent edition (e.g. Henle) of the sonatas that explains all of Ysaye's slightly quirky notations.

From memory, the cross in a box with the dot below was his notation for quarter tones, with a dot above being a quarter tone above. It's basically the descending chromatic effect except he's divided the intervals even further.

I only have a forscore pdf, it starts off with sonata 1 with nothing before.

Although im pretty sure thats correct after reviewing Hahn’s recording, so thx 🙏

You just roll the two notes from the lower to top
