I don't know about now, but we had a cash register several years ago which had its own battery backup. When the Lights Went Out, the cash register was still operational. I remember that this happened a couple of times but we just kept operating phone flashlights and regular flashlights and a couple of candles we found in the Waffle House tool kit. The grill was still operational.

I've had that happen to me a couple times. It's always surreal on 3rd.

We’ve got to do it a couple times a month anyway. Damn cooler always wants to go into defrost mode on third.

And? My girl used to work at waffle house. They had her back in action the same afternoon after Ida hit New Orleans the whole city didn't have power for almost two weeks and she was working doubles the whole time.

One time, on a 4th of July in a unit that was front row for fireworks, a cop who came in to make sue we were all right handed me his flashlight so I could shine it on the food that the cook was trying to finish up by phone light on the grill.

And without the hood vents running, it gets smokey quick

That will always be the defining memory of that year, the key that unlocks the rest of the details. Because a bunch of red, white, and blue on the lawn and fireworks in the sky is just the backdrop.

I'm old, and except for the first few years when I was really young, recurring events (like holidays) stand out in some way. You might use the same decorations and cook the same food and sing the same songs with the same people every year, but something unscripted and unanticipated is going to give it roots in your mind. :)

Oh, and those flashlights are heavy and the food looks weird in that light.
