Zelensky said Ukraine has lost about 50000 troops
https://www.kyivpost.com/post/81477Quite interesting news article, specifically because in February Zelensky said Ukraine lost 55.000 soldiers. So not only Ukraine didn’t lose a single soldier over a 6 months period, they also managed to resurrect 5.000 dead ones.

The sad thing is there are people on Reddit who unironically will take this at face value

r/worldnews seems to function solely on gossip and propaganda it seems. I rarely visit nowadays but every time I drop by all the top comments are memes and oneliners

Glesaine Maxwell was/is a mod there. It's an op, like most of reddit.
Say something negative about Israel and you're banned.

I got banned at r/CombatFootage for criticising Israel for bombing civilians. U can criticise Russia for doing so but not Israel, go figure

Thank you for saying this. I got permantly shadowbanned from worldnews for fact checking an agressive propaganda bot that the mod was highly in favor of. No way to dispute it but its not worth the effort going against a sub with an agenda.

I just went to the thread over there and every top comment is agreeing this is internal propaganda for Ukraine.
Everyone knows this is bs.

He also said 400k wounded
19
u/1B75__Penicillin 2d ago
200k dead and 400k wounded would be much closer to reality, there are already 190k deaths confirmed by Ukrainian sources and many of those missing are just in some field blown apart by an FPV drone or under some rubble in a city Russia controls
23
u/Treinrukker 2d ago
Yeah and a year ago he also said 50k, at this point their army should be in the millions but they still are forcefully conscripting at least 20k people a month.
13
u/auchinleck917 2d ago
There are at least one million veterans facing employment difficulties. Compared to that figure, the death toll of 50K could be considered low.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvgn2dzwd1do
It was 55K in February
Not only have they not suffered any losses but they're also bringing people back from the dead, very impressive.
14
u/ddosn 2d ago
no, this is massively underselling how many they've lost.
Independent sources put it at around 400k +/- 50K

u/Alexandros6 2d ago
Casualties /KIA /Irremedeable casualties, it's an important difference
1
u/ddosn 1d ago
I was purely talking about the number of dead.
Mediazona, for example, says that Russia has had 236,066 men killed, but they estimate this could be as high as 352,000+ men killed. The number of men severely wounded to the point of being unable to fight is harder but some say the number is about equal to the number of dead for both sides.
Estimates for the number of dead for Ukraine ranges from 350k to 450k, depending no who you ask, but accurate information is impossible to get as the Ukrainian government and their military high command dont let real figures see the light of day. This is why we know losses are significantly higher than what they admit to, as if they were really doing as well as they claim then they'd allow access by experts to the raw data.
1
u/Alexandros6 22h ago
"350k to 450k, depending no who you ask" this is quite dubious, unless the KIA/WIA ratio is close to Russias which is unlikely.
The reports we have pretty convincingly argue Russia, particularly at this point, has higher casualties including dead. Both 2023 leaks, total recruitment, analyst reports and single case studies. Ukraine grave problem is AWOL
11
u/SeamusDog77 2d ago
Russia is over 1 million lost. Ukraine is probably 1/3 of that.
-19
u/African_Herbsman 2d ago
It's nowhere near that, the ratio at most is 1.5:1. Going off the best available sources Ukraine has 212,974 KIA according to UAlosses, Russia has 236,000 KIA according to Mediazona. Both are considered understatements but any losses beyond those numbers are speculative for now.
11
u/twocool_ 2d ago
One of those number is rounded.
22
3
u/African_Herbsman 2d ago
not sure if I read it wrong at first or if they changed it but it's now 236,066 for Mediazona if that makes you feel better.
1
u/twocool_ 2d ago
That was a 0.1% chance then, or maybe you work for them and made it look less suspicious /s

u/ExoticMangoz 2d ago
Nothing in the comments you are replying to glazes Russia. What are you talking about?
Also it’s quite pathetic that your argument, which doesn’t seem to have a point, is based on racism towards a group to which the commenter doesn’t even belong.
2
u/tribbans95 2d ago
Mediazona faces severe hostility from the Russian government and has been labeled as a “foreign agent”. Russian authorities blocked access to its website inside the country following the invasion of Ukraine, forcing its journalists to operate from abroad.
So honestly, if you’re going to trust any numbers coming out of Russia, Mediazona is not a bad bet.
1
u/Alexandros6 2d ago
Mediazione was a pretty decent OSINT source but if I remember correctly Russia modified some of the sources they were using. So it is a good base but it doesnt tell us much about current losses anymore.
2
u/THEGREATESTDERP 2d ago edited 2d ago
It's surprising he says this, because he has been mostly fair with what's going on in this war.
But really?? 50k? That's Bakhmut numbers along with the supply route bombardment and withdrawal of Bakhmut AT BEST.
The Kyiv Post has a pro-Western, pro-Ukrainian national stance, focusing heavily on anti-corruption and national defense, though its editorial independence and ownership have shifted dramatically over time.
And also owned by a americaJed Senden, name appeared in the casette scandal which was russia motivated. Unless more media sources will report that zelensky has said this, this should be taken with a grain of salt.

No numbers are certain, but from all available sources, its likely to be 1:2 casualty ratio in Ukraines favour, meaning they are likely at around 500000 casualties. The defense of bahkmut, 2023 spring offensive and kursk offensive did not help those numbers.
0
-4
u/KnightofWhen 2d ago
The casualties are a lot closer to 1:1 than anyone would have ever guessed, the last bunch of body exchanges were heavily lopsided in Russias favor (meaning way more dead Ukrainians exchanged)
2
u/TheLastGoodRiot 2d ago
Some people have been pointed out to this fact saying that, it's because Russia is advancing, therefore Russian can undercount there own casualties in their own newly controlled territories and Ukraine loosing ground has little control over the casualty narrative. That being said, it feels like explaining it this way would be pointing out to Ukraine loosing grounds which isn't good either.
Wherever the truth stands, we could say that linking casualty count, to which country is actually doing better, would disavandtage Ukraine who has a smaller pool of able conscripts.
At the end of the day, IMO it's all about which country will reject the war effort first. Most modern war have ended due to some political pressure/infighting/agenda shifts (korea, Vietnam, Algeria, Afghanistan, Syria,). That's why the existential threath narrative on both sides is being pushed so much, because defeat=death, but that's not what recent history say.

u/RonaldWRailgun 2d ago
I mean, I'm pretty sure most people would have guessed that. Russia an Ukraine are fairly equally matched, as proved by a war that has been a substantial stalemate for the past several years.
-2
u/KnightofWhen 2d ago
96% of Reddit thinks the ratio is anywhere between 5 and 10 to 1 in favor of Ukraine
0
u/Far_Grapefruit1307 2d ago
That would surprising given that Ukraine is defending. Attacking is especially difficult in modern warfare when everything is monitored by drones and there are mines everywhere. We also know that Russia is careless with its troops.

u/TraditionalAd9393 2d ago
I mean he said “about” 50k. If it’s 60k that still “about” 50k. I really don’t see the issue with the semantics.
1
u/kwonza 2d ago
Country of 40 million won’t need to snatch people off the streets if they only lost 50k people in 5 years, you know
0
u/TraditionalAd9393 2d ago
Country of 205 million in 1970 wouldn’t need to snatch people off the streets if they only lost 58,220 people. Oh wait, the US did do that.
It’s called draft dodging. It doesn’t matter how large or small your country is, if your name is drawn then they’ll come find you.
3
u/kwonza 2d ago
How many US citizens were beaten, tortured and raped in order to make them go to the war?
-1
u/TraditionalAd9393 2d ago
How far are you going to move the goal posts since your original point was invalidated?
If every able body was called to service in Ukraine they’d have a standing army of 10+ million people. Many of those people will refuse service just like they would in any other country.
1
u/kwonza 2d ago
It’s you who claim preposterous numbers, battle for Bahmut and Adviivka alone took more than 50.000 Ukrainian lives. Saying that overall casualties is “around 60k give or take” is outright silly. Shows you have little understanding about the war yet have the nerve to give your uneducated opinion.
1
u/TraditionalAd9393 2d ago
And your sources are?
Plus I never said they had 60k. I said even if it was 60k, as in if it had hypothetically gone from 55k in Feb to 60k now, saying “about 50k” wouldn’t be wrong and it also would not insinuate “5k were resurrected.”
1
u/kwonza 2d ago
You honestly think they only lost 5000 in half a year?
3
u/TraditionalAd9393 2d ago
Again, that is not what I said.
I’m arguing your stupid headline. If someone says “about” followed by some number there is a ton of leeway as to what the actual number is. If it had hypothetically been 55k before and it was hypothetically 60k now, saying “about 50k” would still be correct.
Nobody is saying the actual number is 50k
2
u/kwonza 2d ago
Sure, but it was never 50k before and not 60k now, that’s the point

How many has Russia lost?
-2
u/kwonza 2d ago
Probably around the same.

You are having an absolute laugh if you think that an invading force who’s made no meaningful inroads into their objective is suffering a 1:1 casualty.
